Truth brings light to man’s life and direction to his steps. In government, in private dealings, in the inner life of the individual, truth makes the differences. 2 Jesus taught that his word was truth. It is truth which brings freedom from sin and ethical dealings. To know Jesus is to know God’s truth about how to live and what to live for. Seeking truth brings mankind back to the Bible to study and to meditate. Truth seeking necessitates daily searching and study. 3 Sunday morning and Wednesday evening the church meets regularly for Bible study. Those great occasions for truth-seeking can make a vital difference in you life. Your Soul is Important!! Which are You? A pillar or a sleeper? A wing or a weight? A booster or a buckler? The Cracked Acorn Foundation April 30, 2017 c.r. van arsdall “For no one can lay any foundation,” - 1 Corinthians 3:11 In your first Sunday school class your teacher must have said, "Put your hands together with the tips touching. Here is the steeple ,open it up and here are the people." Mapmakers use the steeple symbol to denote on their maps where church buildings are located. The town of Warrenton, Virginia is taking the restoration of steeples very seriously. Restoration of a 65 foot steeple with similar materials can cost up to $330,000. Where we once worshiped , our steeple was causing the roof to leak. At a loss to determine its fate, the business meeting decided to circulate a questionnaire to ask the members for a friendly and decisive answer to the problem, repair/remove. Some members came back with their own question Who/when put up the steeple and others had never looked up and saw that there was a steeple. Its removal would require a cherry picker and a county permit to take it to the landfill, the dollars would surely pile up!! Finally, a resourceful member volunteered to repair, seal and paint the steeple. (There is a Virginia company whose business is to restore steeples.) Supposedly, the steeple comes from the medieval days when the steeple-crowned hats were worn by members of the Christian church. It also was meant as the steeple house and the word for the "church." Such pointed hats were placed on those who were sentenced to death for their involvement in the "dark arts", in hope that this holy symbol would help draw salvation into their immortal souls. Would our meeting place be less wonderful without its tip reaching into the heavens. In days when people walked more, the church steeple surely would have been the landmark to aim for as you neared the city. The steeple meeting place of the faithful gives a signal for hope, comfort, rest and the assurance of our God. Genesis 11:3-5 They said to each other, "Come ,let's make bricks and bake them thoroughly." They used brick instead of stone, and tar for mortar. Then they said, "Come let us build ourselves a city, with a tower that reaches to the heavens, so that we may make a name for ourselves and not be scattered over the face of the whole earth." Growth Mentality vs Maintenance Mentality —Philippians 2:1-5 Maintenance Mentality Relies on Us. Growth Mentality Relies on God. Maintenance Mentality is Satisfied I have always been fascinated by “Magic,” as I supposed many people are. One would guess it is the impossible things they do that brings the attention and sense of awe. Growth Mentality is Constructively Discontent. Certainly, we know it is all “slight-ofhand” but it is great fun to watch and to lose ourselves in the spectacle. Revelation 3:17-18 That is what Satan counts on to beguile people away from God. Satan provides the “slippery slope” helping far to many people the a way to deny God & belittle His words of wisdom. I Corinthians 3:6-7 II Corinthians 5:7, Maintenance Mentality L____ B_______ Growth Mentality L______ A______ Acts 1:8 Revelations 3:1 Maintenance Mentality S_____ the S______ Growth Mentality W_____ C______ 2 Timothy 3:16-17 The “slight-of-hand” all to often keeps us busy in the here and now so we can’t keep our eye on the hereafter. Satan’s spectacle appeals to our senses and we are willing participants. Like the magic of Pharaohs, kings and TV we love to watch and marvel when others are fall for the trick. Be careful as we enjoy the show, for one day we will the display may beguile us away for our Lord.
