hard work pays off.
“It’s a reward for the kids more than
the coaches and it starts to foster some
confidence,” Searle said. “And once a
team starts gelling and winning again
it’s best to get out of the way and let
them work.”
But sometimes the winning streaks
can be harder than the losing streak,
Searle said, because the players look
back at the wins and concentrate on
percentage. In contrast, Eastern leads the
OVC with a .253 attacking percentage.
Welch said a major reason for the
potent Panther attack is the team’s variety of options.
“Kara, Megan and I will be at the net
and we’ll be like ‘Maren, Maren, set me.’
It’s always good to have a go-to player,
but on this team anyone can come
through. Everyone wants the ball,”
Welch said.

games play-by-play.
No matter how a team looks at losing streaks, whether it ignores them or
concentrates on breaking the slump,
it’s always rewarding when they end.
“When we won (our first conference game in seven years), we stormed
the court like it was the national
championship,” Roulhac said. “Some
of the girls were crying because they
were so happy.
“It was the most emotional win of
my career, and I’m sure for the university.”
Brett Favre’s wife diagnosed
with breast cancer
THE ASSOCIATED PRESS
GULFPORT, Miss. – The wife of
Green Bay Packers quarterback Brett
Favre was diagnosed with breast cancer, yet more bad news in a year full
of heartache for the family.
Deanna Favre was recently
released from Sloan Kettering
Cancer Center in New York after
undergoing a lumpectomy, Bonita
Favre, the quarterback's mother, told
The Sun Herald on Monday.
Deanna Farve will undergo
chemotherapy treatments which
could last up to five months and is
expected to make a full recovery,
Bonita Favre said.
The Packers had no comment on
the matter, and Brett Favre was
unavailable Tuesday. He usually
addresses the media on Wednesdays.
It has been a difficult year for the
Favre family. In December, Brett's
father, Irvin, died from a heart
attack. Deanna's brother, Casey
Tynes, 24, was killed three weeks ago
in an ATV accident on Brett Favre's
property near his home in Oak
Grove.
Favre was told about his wife's
cancer on Oct. 14 and he left practice to be with his family for a day
before the Packers' game against
Detroit on Oct. 17.
“Brett was relieved to learn that
the situation is not as bad as it could
have been,'' Deanna's brother-inlaw, Scott Favre said. ``We think
that they got (all of the cancer) out.''
Deanna Favre runs the Brett Favre
Fourward Foundation, which has
raised more than $1 million for disadvantaged or disabled children in
Wisconsin and Mississippi.
“The family has been through a
great deal and we will get through
this,'' Bonita Favre said. ``We would
like to thank everyone for the
prayers and support. We're a strong
family and with the help of the Lord,
we'll get through this.''

baseball is team batting average
with runners in scoring position.
An example of a keeper stat in basketball is shooting percentage in
the fourth quarter. A keeper stat in
football is fourth quarter scoring
and the Panthers have been horrible in the fourth quarter this year.
In their first seven games of the
season, the Panthers are being
outscored 102-37. They have been
outscored in the fourth quarter in
all seven of their games. They have
been shut out in the fourth quarter
in three of their seven games. And
this past weekend against
Tennessee-Martin, the Panthers
were outscored 26-7 in the fourth
quarter.
Let’s compare Eastern’s fourth
quarter scoring, or lack there of to
other Ohio Valley Conference
teams.
First place Jacksonville State has
outscored their opponents 65-53 in
the fourth quarter, but they’ve
outscored their opponents in every
quarter, which is why they’re sitting
on top of the OVC at 4-1.
Tennessee Tech just beat
“In order to win this
year the Panthers must
feel that sense of
urgency in the fourth
quarter.”
JOHN HOHENADEL, SPORTS REPORTER
Jacksonville State this past weekend
and they have outscored their
opponents 61-44 in the fourth
quarter this season. How did
Tennessee
Tech
beat
the
Gamecocks? They outscored them
10-0 in the fourth quarter. The
only quarter they have been
outscored in is the first.
Tennessee State has outscored
their opponents 85-60. Murray
State has outscored their opponents
34-26 in the fourth. Samford has
been outscored in every quarter
except the fourth, outscoring their
opponents 62-60.
The three remaining teams,
Eastern Kentucky, Southeast
Missouri and Tennessee-Martin
have all been outscored in the
fourth quarter. The only surprise in
this group of three is Eastern
Kentucky, who now sits in a threeway tie atop the OVC at 3-1.
In order to win this year the
Panthers must feel that sense of
urgency in the fourth quarter. If
they’re down, they have to dig
down deep and score to tie the
game. If they’re up, 10 or 14 or
eight like they have been in three
games heading into the fourth
quarter this year, they have to
develop a killer instinct and put
those teams away. Not only should
they put those teams away, they
should put them away then put
them away again.
If you don’t believe in OVC football stats here are some NFL stats.
The Patriots are now on a NFL
record 21-game winning streak. Are
they outscoring their opponents in
the fourth? You better believe it.
On their 21-game streak, they’re
outscoring their opponents 124-84
in the fourth.
Lets compare the Oakland
Raiders fourth quarter scoring in
almost that same 21-game span. In
their last 23 games Oakland is 617. In those 23 games they are
being outscored by their opponents
in the fourth quarter 117-166.

Former Yankees to serve probation
THE ASSOCIATED PRESS
BOSTON – Two former New
York Yankees who got into a brawl
with a Fenway Park groundskeeper
during the 2003 American League
Championship series agreed
Tuesday to serve six months of probation and perform 50 hours of
community service.
Pitcher Jeff Nelson and outfielder Karim Garcia accepted the deal
just before the case was scheduled
to go to trial.
The deal also calls for the players
to be evaluated for possible anger
management counseling.
If they meet the requirements and
stay out of trouble, the assault and
battery charges will be dismissed.
"While sufficient evidence exists
to prove the case beyond a reasonable doubt, the conduct of Nelson
and Garcia does not merit criminal
convictions," the district attorney's
office said in a statement.
Charges were dropped last week
against Paul Williams, 25, of Derry,
N.H., a part-time groundskeeper who
got into the fight with the players.
The fight broke out after
Williams cheered for the Red Sox
while in the Yankee bullpen during
the third game of the ALCS last
October.
The groundskeeper sued the
players for more than $33,000. He
said the fight left him with a
crooked nose, broken teeth, a neck
injury and cleat marks on his body.
But prosecutor David Fredette
told the judge that a videotape of
the fight revealed that Williams'
most serious injuries were inflicted
by other players who jumped into
the fracas, and not by Nelson and
Garcia.
"It'd be nice of you guys to write
that," Nelson told a reporter as he
walked out of the courtroom.
Nelson, 37, now plays for the
Texas Rangers. Garcia, 28, was
released this August from the
Baltimore Orioles.
Nelson and Garcia would have
faced up to 2 1/2 years in prison if
convicted.
