The destruction of the monster storm that hit the Philippines last weekend has been likened to the 2004 Boxing Day Tsunami. Over 9.5 million people have been affected and urgently need shelter, clean water, sanitation and health supplies. Samar, the first location where the storm made landfall, has a population of 733,000 people. Days after the typhoon struck many residents, which still have not been contactable and thousands are reported missing. During the week our Year 9’s were involved in Outdoor Education Camps across Victoria and Canberra. Even though the weather was difficult at times, it was great to hear of the attitudes and good behaviour of the boys. As we saw in the first article of this Newsletter, any difficulty that the Students and Staff faced are not very great when compared to the hardships of the people of the Philippines. I would like to thank Mr Matthew Johnson, our Outdoor Education Coordinator and all of the Staff who cared for the boys so well. Last weekend, the Provincial of the Oblates of Mary Immaculate, Fr Leo Mifsud O.M.I. made the announcement that Fr Harry Dyer O.M.I. would be transferred to our Parish at Moe/Newborough and Fr John Sherman O.M.I. would be transferred to our Brother School, Iona College in Queensland. Fr John will continue his ministry as Vocations Coordinator so we will still see plenty of him next year. Fr Irek Dampc O.M.I. has had his time extended for six months in our community and we remain hopeful that further Oblates may join our community later in 2014. On behalf of the College Community, I thank them both for their generosity and care of our community. Our family of Missionary Oblates of Mary Immaculate are together on the ground with Take Care and God Bless the people and are also in a capacity to help Fr Michael Twigg O.M.I. through the provision of essential needs. This week we farewell our National Evangelisation Team (NET) of Simon, Travis, Katrina, Brigid and Erica who have spent 2013 ministering to our community here at Mazenod. These generous and faithfilled young people have demonstrated the very best of Catholic values and respect. They have all had a significant and life-long impact on many of our boys and they have clearly offered an appreciation of the presence of Jesus in our lives. We sincerely wish them well as they all venture onto the next journey of their lives and we will forever remain grateful for their contribution to our community. Bridging the Gaps We are a group of volunteers, working to support vulnerable members of our community. We are asking for donations of clean clothing, kitchenware, toys, furniture and whitegoods to support a Refugee and Asylum Seeker Support Program. In desperate demand, are clean men's and boys clothes. I am happy to collect donations of clothing from the school, or they can be delivered to my house, which is about 3 minutes from the school. If you have large items you would like to donate, please contact me and I will arrange transport, or if you have transport (even better), I can give you the address to deliver to. All of your generosity will be gratefully received.
