CONNECTIONS A Publication of St. Peter’s Lutheran Church, Pawleys Island, SC 29585 March 2017 Ash Wednesday Reflection Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, A couple of years ago, one of our bishops received an email saying, “Can’t we change the words on Ash Wednesday ‘Remember you are dust and to dust you shall return’ to something more positive?” That pastor was told “No, that is the whole point of Ash Wednesday and why it prepares us so well for our journey into the Lenten season.” If you think about it, our world today is living in a time of great wilderness unrest and anxiety where more than ever we need the ancient disciplines of the 40 days of Lent to remind us who we are and to whom we belong. Humility, repentance, self-denial, confessing our sins, daily scripture reading and a deeper reliance on prayer all remind us not of our own invincibility but rather our human vulnerability and our utter dependence on God. The cross-shaped ashes on our forehead reminds us of Paul’s words in Corinthians 1:25, “for God’s foolishness is wiser than human wisdom, and God’s weakness is stronger than human strength.” As we enter into this Lenten wilderness together in this 500 th year of the Reformation. I encourage you to recommit yourselves to your own daily Lenten disciplines of prayer and dwelling in the Word. Hopefully many of you will also participate in the “Praying with Luther” event on Monday, March 14, from 1:00‐4:00 p.m. at Redeemer in Columbia. In closing, I want to share with you one of Luther’s prayers that reflects his theology of the cross, his personal need for self-surrender and renewal. It is one of my favorite prayers from Luther. Please know that Ginny, Eric and I deeply value your leadership and we hold you in our prayers especially as we enter into this busy and yet holy season of the year. Yours in Christ, Herman Continued on page 17 Prayer concerns for Family & Friends Karen Hyssong Carpenter, daughter of Jack & Shirley Hyssong Charlotte Carroll, sister of Lois McCall Wayne Kilmer, son of Sandy Davis Denise Kuharick, sister of Debbie Shoup Alice Manke, mother of Sherri Miller Chuck Massey, brother of Sandy Chenault Phyllis Osborne, mother of Dana Kiser Yolanda Palumbo, mother of Debbie Shoup Ethel Parker, sister of Euna Lee Marti Lynn Gluntz Reese, daughter of Karen Gluntz Julie Steward, sister of Janet Hosler Joseph Palumbo, father of Debbie Shoup Gary Caudill, brother of Roger & Louise Caudill Terry Drake, cousin of Diane Atherton Wendy Alling, daughter of Guy & Muffie Alling Natalie Alexander, mother of Sue Zebrosky Joe Price, father of Michelle Dukes Anne Hoile, friend and neighbor of Monique & Dave Philips Randy Waybright, friend of Karen Gluntz James Mulligan, son-in-law of Kathy & John Hoelzel JoEllen Langley, friend of Diane Atherton Gretchen Moore , daughter of Ellen & Glenn Krechel Ed Regan, friend of Joe & Linda Lane Joseph Palumbo, father of Debbie Shoup Elaine Kanupp, daughter-in-law of Paul & Linda Kanupp Jimmy & Kathy Erbe, friends of Terry & Dana Kiser Ray Dodge, friend of Doug & Sallie Anderson Brooke Reidle, friend of Terry & Dana Kiser Rich Zeddun, son of Wally & Sue Zeddun Betty Lee, grandma of Morgan & Hannah Lee Lizzy Assey, niece of Kay Williams Rod Cyr, brother-in-law of Sherri Miller 2 Our St. Peter’s Family Shirley Bendik Ray Rauenzahn Irv Dohner Matthew Roberts Bob Harding Dick Zuch Euna Lee Pat McAlister Monika McAlister Roy Oberg Please notify the church office if any names need to be removed or added. Once again we find ourselves in the middle of a communications revolution—the ways that we talk to each other, share information and build communities, are changing rapidly. Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and all the rest of our social media have made it possible for ideas to travel around the world in record time. Adapting to this changing landscape is both a challenge and an opportunity for leaders in ministry. How can we use online tools to help people develop meaningful and lasting connections and relationships? How can we help the voice of faith to rise above the all noise? Participants will consider how new and old tools can work together to help us build community in our congregations and beyond. We will look at the changing media landscape of our culture, get hands-on experience with some of the most popular tools, and walk away with concrete tips and strategies to make the most of the opportunities they present to us. For the last six years, David Hansen has been helping congregations and church leaders use new tools to share the old story of Jesus and to build community. He has helped individuals and organizations better understand their mission and share it with the world. His work has been featured in Living Lutheran, PLGRM Magazine and other publications. Instructor: David Hansen is a pastor serving at Spirit of Joy! Lutheran Church in Houston. He is also the Director of Communication and Innovation for LEAD (waytolead.org). BYO bagged lunch. The project needs to addressed immediately to avoid further damage. Working together, the Property and Grounds and Stewardship committees decided on a fundraiser to cover the costs of remediation. At the luncheon on th November 20 an “Envelope Adoption” took place. Participants were asked to select an envelope with a designated amount in order to donate to the project. The remaining envelopes are in a basket in the Narthex. We ask you to prayerfully consider contributing to this most important endeavor. You can select one (or more). Women of the ELCA The women of St. Peter's Lutheran Church "act boldly" and work together in love. Come join us! Did you know that every woman of St. Peter’s Lutheran Church is a member of WELCA? The Women of the ELCA are able to have a great impact in the church community. Over the last few years, a small group of ladies has been committed to organizing WELCA and have supported activities such as quilting, the garage sale, the Apple Dumpling Festival, and Harvest of Grace Café. Contact Tami Lee with interest. The St. Peter's quilting group continues to work hard to make quilts. The WELCA quilting group has completed 25 large quilts for LWR. These will be delivered to Maryland to the LWR warehouse. In September/October, the quilting group tied 25 lap sized quilts for local nursing homes and the Family Justice Center in Georgetown. We have another 25 quilts ready to be tied!!! We continue to use bed sheets (for the backing) and light weight blankets (for the batting). Donations of these items can be dropped off in the WELCA storage room. Thank you for your support of our quilting ministry. The Group Meets on the first Monday of the month@ 2:00 p.m. in Heinecke Hall. Contact Jane Rud for information at 843-651-148 Baby Layette Program What is a layette you ask? It’s a collection of the basic needs for a baby...items that every new mom should have ready when a baby comes home. But, not all moms have baby showers, or have the money and support to get what is needed. So, St. Peter’s WELCA puts together items in baskets and gift bags and delivers them to Georgetown Hospital. The nurses in the maternity area decide which moms will benefit from a layette and deliver them. Each layette includes: newborn onesies and sleepers, receiving blankets, baby shampoo and wash, newborn disposable diapers and baby wipes. Additional items that are added: socks, hats, pacifiers, a soft toy, towels & washcloths, and bottles. (Please no baby powder or Q-tips). Donated items can be placed in the basket in the narthex. Thank you! Contact Marla Fabian at [email protected] 12 2017 Flower Chart is posted on the Bulletin Board. Please take a moment to fill in the date you would loke to donate the flowers. The cost is $20 Please make check payable to St. Peter’s and indicate flowers. You can drop your check off by the office or drop in offertory plate. Thanks. The Women's Bible Study will be meeting on the first Tuesday of every month at 2:00 p.m. Come join us as we study the Bible and a variety of books to help us experience the work of God in our lives. This is a wonderful opportunity to learn as well as experience fellowship among women in a small group setting. Please feel free to invite your friends! We will meet in the conference room. Contact Linda Van Dyke for details St. Peter’s Sharing Library Have you stopped into our Church Library yet? You will be surprised by how many types of books we have for lending. It’s totally free, and you can sign out a book or two for as long as you need. Just return it so others may enjoy a good read! Update on Organ Fund Worship and Music Committee is happy to say that several donations and memorial gifts have recently been added to the St. Peter's Organ Fund. The organ we are currently using was built with 1960's technology, and was donated to us in 1989 by a church that had already replaced this instrument with a newer organ! Although this organ has served us well, the new digital technology offers greatly improved sound quality, many additional "voices" and instrumental tone colors, and USB computer connectivity for continuing upgrades and servicing. If you've been thinking about making a donation or memorial gift and would like more information, please speak to Suzanne Young ([email protected]) or any member of the Worship and Music Committee. Important Note All committee reports not included in the Council Minutes are filed in the Church Office. 14 Christmas Card Ministry Wondering what to do with those cards after the Christmas? Don’t throw them away! WELCA would like your help again in supporting St. Jude’s Ranch for Children’s recycled card program. It is easy! Just cut off the fronts of any Christmas or all occasion greeting card (except Hallmark, Disney and American Greeting). Only the fronts of cards are used and you need to be sure the backside is free of any writing. Deposit them in a box provided in the Narthex and leave the rest to WELCA. WELCA will mail them to St. Jude’s where the children will recycle the cards and make “new” cards. The benefits are two-fold for the children at St. Jude’s Ranch for Children: customers who purchase these recycled cards receive “green” greeting cards for their use and the children receive payment for their work and learn entrepreneurship skills and the benefits and Importance of “going green”. My Lord, fill it. I am weak in the faith; strengthen me. I am cold in love; warm me and make me fervent, that my love may go out to my neighbor. I do not have a strong and firm faith; at times I doubt and am unable to trust you altogether. O Lord, help me. Strengthen my faith and trust in you. In you I have sealed the treasure of all I have. I am poor; you are rich and came to be merciful to the poor. I am a sinner; you are upright. With me, there is an abundance of sin; in you is the fullness of righteousness. Therefore I will remain with you, of whom I can receive, but to whom I may not give. Amen. Continues from front page Copyright © 2017 Augsburg Fortress. All rights reserved.
