Bless the LORD, O my soul; and all that is within me, bless His holy name!
Bless the LORD, O my soul, and forget not all His benefits:
Who forgives all your iniquities, Who heals all your diseases,
Who redeems your life from destruction, Who crowns you with lovingkindness and tender
mercies,
Job 19:25 -- I know that my redeemer (Hebrew: ga'ah) lives, and that in the end he will stand on the
earth. (NIV - emphasis and clarity added)
WORDS IN THE GREEK THAT ARE TRANSLATED AS "REDEEMED" HAVE SIGNIFICANT
INDIVIDUAL MEANINGS:
I.
Agorazo: The marketplace for slaves.
Word Definition:
The word agorazo literally means "marketplace for slaves."
Revelation 5:9 -- And they sang a new song, saying: “You (Jesus) are worthy to take the scroll, and
to open its seals; for You (Jesus) were slain, and have redeemed us to God by Your blood out
of every tribe and tongue and people and nation, (NKJV - emphasis and word clarity added)
Philippians 2:6-7 -- Though he was God, he did not think of equality with God as something to cling
to. Instead, he gave up his divine privileges; he took the humble position of a slave (Greek:
doulos) and was born as a human being. (NLT - emphasis and clarity added)
II.
Exagorazo: out of the marketplace for slaves.
Word Definition:
The word exagorazo is agorazo with the prefix "ex." "ex" means "out of."
Therefore, exagorazo literally means "out of the marketplace for slaves." It
also has the meaning "to redeem by payment of a price to recover from the
power of another, to ransom, to buy off."
Galatians 3:13a -- Christ has redeemed us from the curse of the law,... (NKJV - emphasis added)
Hosea 3:1-2

Then GOD ordered me, “Start all over: Love your wife again, your wife who’s in bed with her
latest boyfriend, your cheating wife. Love her the way I, GOD, love the Israelite people, even
as they flirt and party with every god that takes their fancy.”
I did it. I paid good money to get her back. It cost me the price of a slave.

III.
Lytrosis: The full payment of a slave.
Word Definition:
In the Greek, lytrosis means "the full payment of a slave," or "the complete
ransoming or deliverance from the penalty of sin." It is the full payment of a
slave.
Hebrews 9:12 -- Not with the blood of goats and calves, but with His own blood He entered the Most
Holy Place once for all, having obtained eternal redemption (lytrosis). (NKJV - emphasis and
clarity added)
IV.
Apolutrosis: The full payment of slave's freedom.
Word Definition:
In the Greek, when you add the prefix "apo" to a word, it means "to return to
its original state." When added to the word lytrosis (or lutrosis), apolutrosis
means "to return a slave to his original state." It is the full payment of a slave's
freedom. You are not just buying a slave for you. You are buying the person's
freedom to never be a slave again.
Ephesians 1:7 -- In Him we have redemption (the full payment of our freedom) through His blood, the
forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of His grace (NKJV - emphasis and clarity added)
Galatians 4:7 -- Therefore you are no longer a slave but a son, and if a son, then an heir of God
through Christ. (NKJV - emphasis added)
1 Corinthians 15:45 -- The Scriptures tell us, “The first man, Adam, became a living person.” But the
last Adam—that is, Christ—is a life-giving Spirit. (NLT - emphasis added)
