Statistical Publications 1840–2000 Chapter 2: Early Statistical Sources – 19th Century This chapter provides the references to publications with statistical content for the period prior to 1853 and to other references for the period prior to 1900. The Blue Books, Gazettes and Journals of the House of Representatives and of the Legislative Councils contain statistical information as well as explanatory material. The content of these books is, as one would expect, more descriptive. The publications quoted are those that contain substantive numeric information or provide commentary that may illuminate the available statistics of their period. All newspapers of the early part of the period (to the mid 1870s) are listed, even though statistical content in these is fragmented. 2.1 Blue Books and Other Statistical Publications (For details of the content of the Blue Books, see chapter 3, section 3.1.) 2.1.1 Blue Book – Colony of New Zealand 1840, Colonial Secretary 1841, Colonial Secretary 1842, Colonial Secretary 1843, Colonial Secretary 1844, Colonial Secretary 1845, Colonial Secretary 1846, Colonial Secretary 1847, Colonial Secretary 2.1.2 Blue Book – Province of New Ulster 1848, Colonial Secretary 1849, Colonial Secretary 1850, Colonial Secretary 1851, Colonial Secretary 1852, Colonial Secretary 2.1.3 Blue Book – Statistics of New Munster, New Zealand from 1841 to 1848 Compiled from official records in the Colonial Secretary’s Office.
