Candle Bell Fundraiser
Thank you to all who’ve purchased candles to support Saint Paul bell choirs.
Unfortunately the final order has been delayed due to Hurricane Sandy causing
major manufacturing and distribution issues. Thank you for your patience, those
of you who have yet to receive your candles! Estimated arrival time is around the
end of February. I will keep you posted in the bulletin as to when they arrive.
Singing Valentines
There is a fun and special way to tell a friend or loved one how much you love
them. Please contact me through my e-mail ([email protected]) or by
telephone (402-477-6951) to order your singing telegram. This is one of my
favorite times of year to go around and sing to people. It’s fun to surprise them
at work or at home to give them a melodious message. All funds ($20 – song in
person or $10 – song by phone) support the bell choirs.

Saint Paul Planning Next Steps
Saint Paul Church is recognized in Lincoln and throughout the Great Plains as an extraordinary congregation. Now
we are among a select group of United Methodist churches in Nebraska and Kansas chosen to work together to
move to an even higher level of vitality in our ministry and congregational life. Ten Saint Paul leaders are participating in five months of training and planning called Vital Congregations: Next Steps. This group will look at all
areas of church life, celebrate where we are strong and suggest new ways to grow. Our team includes:
Barb Jacobson, Tom Lamberson, Nate Lowry, Marilyn Moore, D.J. Thompson, Joel Egger, Cathy Link,
Jamie Scott, Stephen Griffith and David Lux. You’ll be hearing from this group in the months to come, but feel free
to visit with any of them to find out more.
Construction Update
You can expect the Phase Three construction project to be completed during February. Since summer 2012 contractors have been building and installing a new heating, air-conditioning and ventilation (HVAC) system to serve the
Sanctuary, Chapel and Paine Parlor. At this writing (in late January)
workers were pressing to finish insulating the ductwork, and preparing to begin
the start-up procedures during early February. This will take about two weeks,
and then the staff will be trained to operate the system. The two tower rooms will
be carpeted once the insulation is complete, and will be opened for use by the
youth in early February. As this project comes to completion, the Property and
Facilities Committee and the staff would like to thank everyone in the congregation for your patience during the mess and inconvenience, and your faithfulness in
giving the funds to accomplish this part of our goal.

“Interfaith Amigos” to Speak at Dinner and Lecture
Plans are set for an interfaith dinner, Thursday, March 7, 6 p.m., at College View Church, 4801 Prescott Avenue
The event aims to bring together Muslims, Jews and Christians under the theme, “Family Values in Abrahamic
Traditions.”
This year’s event will feature The Interfaith Amigos. Rabbi Ted Falcon is known as a spiritual guide, author, therapist and teacher of Jewish meditation. Imam Jamal Rahman is a popular speaker on Islam, Sufi spirituality, and
interfaith relations. Together they have spoken widely, exploring the frontiers of interfaith spirituality. At this event
they will be joined by a Christian minister from the Lincoln-Omaha area.
The dinner will include a brief talk by the Interfaith Amigos. The cost is $15 per person; advance tickets are
required. Because a similar event last year sold out in less than a week, organizers have added a free lecture at 7:30
p.m. following the dinner. The lecture is open to the public; however registration is required to ensure adequate
seating. To purchase tickets for the dinner or register for the lecture, visit www.niagarafoundation/nebraska This
gathering of the Abrahamic faiths is sponsored by Saint Paul Church, Westminster Church, South Street Temple,
Union College, the Niagara Foundation, ARYA, and Interchurch Ministries of Nebraska.

Saint Paul Day at Don and Millie’s
The third Sunday of each month is Saint Paul’s
designated day at Don and Millie’s (5200 S. 56th

from Saint Paul Church, 20 percent of your check
comes back to the church.
Library News
The All-Church Reading Challenge is in “high gear”!
The total 17-adult category has exceeded the other
three age groupings by nine readers! The magic
number of 60, in celebration of Stephen Griffith’s
birthday, was exceeded by five. All results will be
revealed Sunday, February 17, as recognition is
given and awards are presented at both morning worship services. The biggest question is, will we exceed
$2,577 raised for the orphanage in 2009?
With the need so great and more orphans waiting to
be accepted, it is truly inspiring to see how the people
of Saint Paul Church respond in every way. How
humbling it is to be God’s hands and show His love
to those who have so little!

Chancel Chat
I wish to thank the congregation for the very warm and appreciative
reception you gave the Nebraska Wesleyan University Choir when we sang
in church January 20. We love to come to Saint Paul. February will feature
our own Chancel Choir all month. The choir will be singing a wide variety
of music including music by John Rutter, Mendelssohn, Christiansen, and
a very fine arrangement of Be Thou My Vision and Amazing Grace by a
former student of mine, Emily Bruflat. Emily is pursuing a master’s degree
in church music in Minneapolis. We still have empty places in the Chancel.
Any takers to fill them up? Anyone? The choir is really a friendly and
talented bunch. You can call me at 402-465-2288 for more information.

Mission Barn Sale This Spring!
You may be thinking about winter’s ice and snow, but
soon it truly will be spring! The gigantic Saint Paul Mission Barn Sale can’t be far off; in fact, you can mark your
calendar now for Friday, May 31, and Saturday, June
1. This biennial event will be held at the Faulkner barn,
5902 South Street, and raises funds for the many mission
projects Saint Paul members deem important. Past barn
sales have allowed us to support the Lincoln Food Bank,
Clinic with a Heart, our Nigerian Orphanage, and Saint
Paul mission teams, to name just a few. How can you
begin preparing for this year’s Mission Barn Sale? The
success of the sale depends on lots of “stuff,” which you
may find as you do your winter and spring housecleaning.
We will need all kinds of good, usable items that can find
a home with someone else. Household items, books, sports
equipment, toys, furniture, and collectibles are but a few of
the things that sell well. As in the past, we will not be accepting clothing or shoes. Please keep your items until we
announce the collection dates, as we do not have storage
space right now. Thank you for your interest in our Saint
Paul Mission Barn Sale! This year will be the eighth sale
since 1999. It has become quite a tradition!

Heartbeats
As many of you know, we struggled last year to keep up with paying all of our operating costs.
To maintain the cash flow we needed, we delayed paying all of our Conference apportionments
(our share of costs divided among all the United Methodist churches in Nebraska) until the end of
the year. I rejoice in reporting to you that we were able to pay those apportionments in full at the
end of the year. Many of you gave extra to make that happen; thank you so much for all of your
gifts in 2012, and for all of your gifts for 2013.
The season of Lent starts early this year; Ash Wednesday is February 13. We will have an Ash
Wednesday service at 7 p.m., and this year we are going to have a set-up event the night before.
Our theme for Lent will be The Way and so we are inviting you to view the movie, The Way, on
Tuesday, February 12, at 6:30 p.m. (the movie lasts two hours) in the Sanctuary. The story for
the movie was written by Emilio Estevez and stars Martin Sheen. It’s the moving story of a man
who goes on a pilgrimage after the death of his son, and discovers the beauty of what his son had
been trying to tell him about life.
I will also be leading a Lenten study on Wednesday evenings at 6:30 starting February 20,
entitled “The Way: Walking in the Footsteps of Jesus.” The study is based on a book by Adam
Hamilton of Church of the Resurrection in Kansas City, and the focus is on the life and teachings
of Jesus. On Thursday, February 28, we will be starting the first of four Lenten Luncheons in
which not only is a great lunch provided, but Alicia Opoku and I will be sharing about the “Way
of Jesus” in song and story. We’re going to try treating the season of Lent as a pilgrimage this
year. A pilgrimage is a time people set aside to walk a meaningful path to learn more about
themselves, about life, about God. We have several other meaningful events and experiences
planned in this season, which begins mid-February and stretches through March. I look forward
to seeing you on the way.
