Social Issues: Online Sources Pathfinder Find Articles from CHS Online Databases Go to CHS Website, http://www.clayton.k12.mo.us/Domain/111 Click on Academics, then Library Media Center. On the CHS Library website, left hand menu, select Online Databases. Most log you in automatically from school. You will need a yellow database brochure to access from home. Opposing Viewpoints Under Current Issues, click on Opposing Viewpoints. Beyond the viewpoint articles, this database will provide journal and magazine articles, statistics, news and primary sources on current topics around social issues. In search box, enter keywords (ex: “working women” or “living wage”). Select type of source you would like to view on results page. Ebscohost Research Center Select Academic Search Elite. In search box, type in topic (ex: “gender wage gaps”). Limit to fulltext articles by selecting FullText from lefthand menu of results page. Refine results from this menu if you’d like to limit the time frame of article or source type. In upper righthand corner, click “Login” then type the same username and password you use to log into the school computers. Next click “catalog.” From lefthand menu, select “WebPath Express.” Type search term in box (ex: “racial profiling” to view reliable links on topic. Highly recommend: very reliable and useful sources. Frontline PBS, http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/pages/frontline/topics/ Frontline provides articles on social issues covered on PBS and Frontline programs. Select from topics list to browse current issues features. New York TImes, NYTimes.com For current articles on social issues, select date range of “past 12 months” on lefthand side of NYTimes. You may use broad search terms, such as poverty or “racial discrimination” or you can be more specific, such as “sexual assaults” AND campuses. Pew Research Center, http://www.pewresearch.org/ The Pew Research Center is a nonpartisan "fact tank." Outstanding resource for current statistics and studies on a wide range of social issues and trends, both in the US and abroad. Select “Topics” from search bar to browse topics or use search box in right hand corner to search a topic. Podcasts iTunes Go to iTunes and type in subject in search box for iTunes search box (ex: poverty in America). In listing of results, scroll to iTunes U and Podcasts to view and select an iTunes U episode or podcast. You will need to check source and date of episode or podcast to make sure it is relevant.
