Ian’s 20 cents worth The Psalms are often regarded as “cries from the peoples’ heart.” Psalm 80 today is no exception. Here we learn again the gracious truth that as God’s people we can come to Him simply pleading our own need: such is His grace and our privilege. Even though the Psalmist reminds us of the sorrow and scorn his people experience, there is no loss of faith in Him. But the sorest need of His people is that when they seek His answer, even their prayers seem to anger Him. Their sense of divine alienation from them is so great. The Psalmist reminds God of the special and beloved place His people occupy in His plan. If only He will replace His hand on their affairs, they will become what He desires. The refrain, “Restore us again, O Lord of hosts, Show us the light of your countenance, And we shall be saved,” demonstrates their longing for God’s blessing. In the light of the tumults surrounding us, why not make this refrain your prayer too? Service of Carols and Lessons.
