LOUISIANA CAJUN TENNIS CLASSIC CAJUN TENNIS CLASSIC September 22-25, 2016 ~ Lafayette, Louisiana In 1977, Coach Jerry Simmons of the University of Louisiana founded the first corporate sponsored collegiate fall tennis event in the nation, the Cajun Tennis Classic. The concept was to run the event as a professional tournament with all expenses paid for the teams. UL attracted the top teams in the nation. In 1979, with the inception of ESPN the Cajun Tennis Classic became the first televised collegiate tennis event. This unique event invited 8 of the top teams around the country to compete in a 32 player draw for singles and 16 teams for doubles. In 2014 the Cajun Tennis Classic was reborn after a 26 year hiatus. The same year the Cajuns would win the 2014 Sunbelt Conference Tennis Championship. Area schools will bus elementary students, with teachers as chaperones, on a field trip to UL. We will be asking for community volunteers to help instruct them. Goal estimated number in attendance is 400-600 kids. They will be assigned to courts and the clinic will also feature a 4 game exhibition to learn how to keep score. We will need all the volunteers we can get, aided by area teaching professionals.
