Principal’s Messages
Architect Appointed for the Design of the New School
The Ministry of Education has announced the appointment of a Jasmax-led
design/construction consortium responsible for the building of the new school, an
appointment strongly endorsed by Western Springs College. We are all hugely
excited by the prospect of developing a physical learning environment that is a
better match for the outstanding achievements of Springs students
Jasmax has a strategic focus on “delivering innovative and beautiful sustainable
designs.” The company’s education portfolio includes new schools such as Albany
Senior High School and Ormiston Senior College, and the rebuilding of existing
schools such as Avondale College and Te Whanau o Tupuranga. ( See
www.jasmax.com .)
We are looking forward to meeting the Jasmax team later this week in order to
confirm the master plan and make arrangements for consultation of the key
stakeholder groups in our community.
Parent/Teacher/Senior Student Interviews, Thursday, 26 September, 2.00-7.00pm
A reminder to parents of senior students to book appointments for this Thursday on
www.schoolinterviews.co.nz or to click on the link at the top of the home page on
the website.
These interviews come at a critically important juncture following last week’s
preliminary examinations for senior students. You will be in possession of the exam
results and your student’s Record of Learning indicating the internally assessed
credits which she/he has accumulated to date.
These interviews present an opportunity to use this information to develop or
confirm a well advised plan of attack for ensuring NCEA certification, gaining an
Excellence or Merit certificate endorsement, and/or achieving an Excellence or
Merit course (subject) endorsement.
 Note that school finishes early at 12.30pm on Thursday for all students to
accommodate these interviews.
Parent Action Group Funding Support for Website Development
I would like to acknowledge PAG’s generous support for the imminent school
website upgrade. PAG has contributed $16,000 towards a comprehensive
modernisation of the website which will take place during the next 2-3 months.
The upgrade will incorporate an online news portal which will give us the flexibility
to move beyond the current fairly rigid system of issuing of three newsletters each
term and accommodate within the newsletter template news of events as they
happen. Other features will include a sports draw, results and notification facility
and provision for online payments.
Performing Arts Highlights
TAPAC has been the venue during the last month for some exceptionally fine
performances on the part of our Drama and Dance students: the Year 13 Drama
students (with The Laramie Project); Year 12 Drama (with The Stationary Year 12
Poetry Trip ); and the Dance Your Heart Out collective featuring Dance students at
all levels. Congratulations to Barnaby James, Beth Kayes, Chloe Davison, and Amber
McIntosh whose directing and choreographing expertise has been amply
demonstrated by these productions. Above all, commendations to the talented
students who rewarded their audiences with some wonderful on-stage moments.
JUNIOR ENGLISH
As a department, we have decided to offer the level 1 speaking standard in year 10. This will give
students the opportunity to bank their first credits in our subject as well as free up teaching time in our
busy level 1 programme. This year’s year 10s (apart from Rumaki students, who all complete speaking in
each year of English for Manu Korero) will complete the speaking for this assessment after their exams in
week 4 of next term. Their speeches will be on a topic of their choosing and the content and style will
need to suit an audience of their peers and teacher. Students will be assessed on their content as well as
delivery, so it is critical that the speech is written by the student without outside help.
It can help to have an audience to make practice at home an authentic experience. When giving feedback,
focus on:
 Ideas - are ideas developed and supported with facts/evidence?
 Eye contact – is this regular and meaningful? Is the speech well memorised? Cue cards should be
used and should only have notes rather than the whole speech.
 Body language – does gesture help reinforce the points being made?
 Length – is the speech three minutes long?
If you have questions about this assessment or the change to our programme, please contact me or your
student’s English teacher.

GEOGRAPHY DEPARTMENT
The Geography Department has a new “t” shirt to replace Geography Rocks. The old “t” shirts will be sold
on a first come, first served basis at the bargain price of $5!
Only SM and MM remain so get yours
from a Geography teacher today
The new “t” shirt is the result of the Year 13 fieldtrip to Queenstown, where schist was everywhere and it
became the catchphrase of the trip. Schist is very important to Queenstown, as shown in the notice
boards at the Gondola, shown below.
The colour is “antique sapphire” which has a dark speckle through it, rather like the rock. They will be
available early in Term 4, in male and female sizes, at a price of $15 from your Geography teacher.

INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS
Trip to Rainbows End
On the 8th of September, the international students went to New Zealand’s only theme park, Rainbows
End. There were more than 30 international students and staff who came to enjoy the day. At the theme
park, our international dean, Joanne, prepared a delicious BBQ for lunch when we needed a break from
the rides.
Those who experienced the rides felt a mixture of emotions. Some were horrified and some were excited.
Whatever the reaction, we all enjoyed the trip tremendously. To cap off the day, Rainbows End arranged
a short performance and lolly scramble for us.
PAG (Parent Action Group)
On 30 August we held our annual Quiz Night. Just over 230 college parents, family and friends took part
and over $16,000 was raised toward revamping the school’s website.
Quiz night could not happen without the generous support of local businesses and individuals. Particular
thanks goes to the gold sponsor SOS Eyewear Services. Auction items were donated by Bridgeway
Cinema, Mechanix, Lisa Shearer Hair & Makeover, Specimen Tree Company, South Pacific Pictures, Dear
Reader, Wainamu Luxury Tents, Alison Bonney, Glengarry Garnet Road.
The Quiz Night Silver Sponsors were: The Specimen Tree Company, CG Hudson Consulting, the Monro
Family, the Tapsell Whanau, New Era, Investors in People, B+M Associates Chartered Accountants, Planet
Fun, the University of Auckland Faculty of Science, Anna Schimmel European Bridal Design,
Motorscience, Raw Essentials, Phllip Rice Barrister and Karina Walsh Psychologist, Ray White, Auckland

Term 3 is always full of activity and events in the Arts as students and teachers showcase the best of
the year’s work.Term 3, 2013 has been no exception with seniors and juniors actively involved in
producing work for externals, productions, performances, competitions and trips.
The annual WSC Dance Showcase – Dance your Heart Out was a fantastic display of artistic skill
and talent. Four shows demonstrated incredible technique and passion in Dance across a diverse
range of traditional and contemporary routines and genres.
Coming up in the final week of Term 3 is the annual WSC Talent Quest and we wish those students
participating all the very best.
Thanks to Rihana Te Nana – 13Art Design – for Art and Design for the Arts News.

Dance Your Heart Out at WSC!
The 2013 Dance Showcase was held on the 5th and 6th of September having two shows each night.
Dance styles ranged from contemporary, hip hop to Kapa Haka, Sasa and Capoeira. Year 9 to 13
students performed and we had a total of 24 acts on the Friday night, including two guest
performances by the amazing Rutherford College and the EYP dance company. The performances
were outstanding and all the students stepped it up on stage! The stunning costumes, lighting and
choreography added to the experience and the audience and performers loved it.
On the Friday night a prize giving was held after the last performance, Ollie Carruthers was
presented with the award for diligence and dedication to his dance, a huge honour and very well
deserved.
Overall, the 'Dance Your Heart Out' showcase was a huge success and couldn't have happened
without the amazing efforts of our backstage crew and our amazing Dance teachers Amber McIntosh
and Chloe Davison. Thank you to everyone who came and supported us at the show and we hope
you enjoyed the talent on show that we have here at Western Springs College.
If you missed out please come along to the next showcase held next term called 'The Last Dance'.

FROM THE YEAR 13 ACADEMIC DIRECTOR
It has been a busy few weeks with practice exams and students near the end of their journey with
internal assessments. I have been impressed with the numbers of students who have been seeking
advice from their teachers and staff here about study skills, time management and preparation for
external exams and life next year.
Financial scholarships
Whilst many dates have closed for scholarships, there are still some available. They can be found on the
breakout database or through iwi connections. Any students applying for these are advised to check the
criteria then see me to organise their application.
Graduation dinner
This year I am pleased to announce that our year 13 graduation dinner will be held on Monday 9
December at the North stand of Eden Park. This is a family event where our community come together to
celebrate their students’ time and achievement at Springs. To obtain tickets to this popular event,
payments can be made at the front office. Ticket prices are $95 for a student or single ticket, and $180
for a double ticket for 1 student and 1 adult. Order forms are available at the front office, and in addition
they will be emailed to all year 13 students and available through form teachers. I will look forward to
seeing you there.
Leavers’ gear
In addition to the graduation dinner, the events team has been busy designing and organising the leavers
gear. This year there are three options.
1. T-shirt. This is a grey marle colour with green print, available in sizes S-2XL. $15 each
2. Hoodie. This is a grey marle hoodie with green puff print on the front, and students choice of
nickname on the back in print. Available in sizes 2XS-3XL. $65 each
3. Retro rugby top. This is a green rugby top with felt embroidery logo and Seddon leavers on the
front. Yellow/white print on the back. Available in sizes S-XL. $60 each
Pictures can be seen at the front office or on posters around the school in week 9.
To order students need to complete the order form (emailed out and available from form teachers), and
return this and the full payment to the front office by the end of Monday week 1 term 4. Delivery will be
in week 3.

HEALTH ALERT
Scabies is a skin infection that is caused by tiny insects (mites) which burrow under the skin, causing a
very itchy rash.
Western Springs College has had some cases this year. It can be spread by skin contact and by sharing
clothing or bedding. For this reason, it's more common when you have lots of people living together in
close contact.
Related websites: BestHealth<http:besthealth.bmj.com/x/index.html>
The Ministry of Health has funded free access to this British Medical Journal website for those browsing
the web from within New Zealand.
This covers pictures of what it looks like.
Symptoms:
If you have scabies, you'll have a very itchy rash that is worse at bedtime or when you're warm.
Treatment:
It is important to treat scabies as it won't go away otherwise. Your pharmacist can give you a cream or
lotion to treat the scabies.
Prevention:
To stop scabies spreading:
Everyone's clothes should be washed in hot water and dried-then put in a sealed plastic bag for four
days. (Dry cleaning also works.) Bedding and linen - sheets, pillowcases, towels and facecloths-should be
washed in hot water.
It may be necessary to repeat the scabies treatment-talk to your pharmacist or doctor for advice.
