Message
From The Vice Principal
As we approach the end of Term 2, I would like to thank you for all your help, encouragement,
support and interest. It has been a phenomenal term here in XHPS as our students participated in
a wide array of activities and learning experiences. These included the P6 Overseas Learning Trip
to Penang, the P5 Camp, the National School Games Competitions, the Sports Carnival and of
course, the recent Singapore Youth Festival. There was always something for every child to
experience, learn and enjoy. These opportunities have helped to deepen their learning and fostered
new friendships. The smiles on the children’s faces are a testament of our combined efforts to
make this term a meaningful one. Here, I would also like to put it down on record to thank all our
teachers, staff, parents and coaches for believing in the children and investing your time to support
and develop their interests. Thank you.
The month of May usually indicates a higher level of anxiety for both students and parents as the
students prepare to take the Semestral Assessment 1 (SA1). While assessment is an important
aspect of learning, we should also understand that these tests are not the be-all-and-end-all. The
SA1 is simply a milestone check of the students’ cognitive development at this stage in their
learning journey. It is more important to inspire our students to love learning. I hope we will use this
opportunity to affirm their efforts and continue to develop their diverse interests and needs.
On behalf of the Principal and staff, I wish all of you a restful June holiday.
Warmest Regards
Shirley Quek (Mrs)

Choir (Certificate of Accomplishment)
The choir practices were
intense and focussed on
perfecting the pitch of
every note. Despite the
intensity and rigour, we
managed to perform up
to our expectations at the
SYF Arts Presentation
2016. It was indeed a
sweet fruit to the arduous
labour of our Choir
members!

ADMINISTRATIVE MATTERS
(a) P3 GIFTED EDUCATION SCREENING TEST
1. In our Xinghua Link (April), we announced that the GEP screening test will be conducted in Term 3.
Below are the confirmed dates of the tests:


Screening Exercise (English Language and Mathematics) : 26 August 2016 Friday
Selection Exercise (English Language, Mathematics and General Ability) – for shortlisted
pupils only : 18, 19 October 2016 (Tuesday, Wednesday)
2. The GEP Screening and Selection Exercises will be based on the Primary 1 to Primary 3 English
Language and Mathematics syllabuses. Please note the following:
a. Screening Exercise (Mathematics)
All topics in the Primary 3 Mathematics syllabus are included except for topics on “Area and
Perimeter”, “Geometry” and “Time”.
b. Selection Exercise (Mathematics)
All topics in the Primary 3 Mathematics syllabus are included except for Angles,
Perpendicular and Parallel lines in the topic of Geometry.
3. As this exercise aims to identify suitable pupils with high intellectual potential, pupils who are not
ready to handle the intellectual rigour and demands of the programme will struggle with the enriched
curriculum and not benefit fully from it. Thus, we urge parents not to conduct test preparation
activities to prepare your children for the screening test.
(b) NEU PC PLUS PROGRAMME
4. The NEU PC Plus Programme offers students the opportunity to own a brand new computer at an
affordable price. Needy Singapore Citizens and SPR pupils whose family do not own a personal
computer can tap on this programme to buy personal computers. Each eligible household can only
apply for one (1) PC-Bundle regardless of the total number of school-going children. The combined
gross monthly household income must not exceed $3,000 OR the per capita income must not
exceed $800. If there is a permanently disabled household member, per capita income must not
exceed $875. Past recipient of the NEU PC Plus Programme may reapply only after three (3) years
have lapsed. More details are available at http://www.ida.gov.sg/neupc.
(c) Healthy Meals in Schools Programme (HMSP)
5. As announced earlier, our school will be embarking on the HMSP. To
encourage our pupils to have balanced meals, we will be introducing new
set menus in Term 3 that are healthier and more delicious. These set
meals will include a fixed portion of fruits and vegetables. The revised
cost of these set menus ranges from $1.30 to $1.50. Pupils may add
6
other dishes to their meals at additional costs, but it is important that they consume the right amount
of food. We hope we can work together in promoting healthier eating habits for our children both at
home and in school.
