DEC 2016 & JAN 2017
Events on ‘the other side of the pond’ certainly
cast a degree of gloom over the second half of
November as incredulity at the election result was
rapidly replaced by a sense of foreboding. Just as
well there’s Christmas to look forward to I hear you
say!
There’s so much going on, you really need to read carefully through this edition
with your diary to hand and your pen poised, or you might seriously miss out!
Highlights in the first half of December include: on Saturday 3rd December
St Ida’s Festive Tea attended by Father Christmas and later on, the Ide Aloud
‘Night at the Movies’ Xmas Concert and on11th Dec, the Hub’s Ide Rocks (The
Christmas sing-a-long) promise to provide fun for old and young alike. Be
warned, there are only a few tickets left for the Ide Aloud Concert and your chance
to win an Oscar for the best red carpet outfit!
Brenda and I would like to thank all those who contribute to, distribute and read
the Ide Times and wish you a Happy Christmas and lots of happy times in 2017

IDE PARISH COUNCIL
idevillage.org.uk
If you have anything you wish to be discussed, please bring it to the attention of
one of the councillors or contact the clerk for it to be included on the agenda for
the next meeting.
Meetings: There will be an extra Parish Council meeting at 7pm on Wednesday
14th December 2016 in the Memorial Hall specifically for the co-option of a new
Parish Councillor. You are welcome to attend.
The next full Parish Council meeting will be on Wednesday 18th January 2017 at
7.30 pm – venue to be confirmed. This will start with a ten minutes’ slot allocated
for public participation.
Keeping in touch: We publish the agenda and minutes of the bi-monthly
meetings on the notice board in Coronation Gardens and on the website
idevillage.org.uk .
In response to feedback received earlier in the year, a facility was set up on the
website page to enable residents to receive automatic emails when items of
interest are added to the site. Have you signed up yet? Just add your name and
email details to the section on the main page and hit “subscribe”.
The Bus Shelter has been cleaned and renewed with weather protective
coatings. The notice board is provided for publicising local, community events.
Please remember to take down posters or notices after your event has taken
place, to keep the notice board fresh and attractive.

On windy days, items from the recycling boxes can get blown about. The
recycling team have asked that householders stack their boxes, placing the blue
sack or food waste container on the top to act as a lid to prevent items blowing
away.
Winter weather: If you can, please make sure the drains outside your property
are kept clear of leaves to help prevent flooding. The grit in bins at the side of
the road is for use on the roads. If you need road salt or sandbags they are
available from the container in the car park – to arrange collection, please contact
Barry Hookins (07591 551162) or Andy Swain (01392 257945)
2.
Play Area: The work to complete the renovation of the Play Area will have
started on 21st November – weather permitting. We are grateful to the Coastal
Recycling Community Fund for their grant, without which the work would not have
been able to proceed. Thank you to everyone involved in the fund-raising events
held over several years, and to Barry Hookins and Angelique Nichols for their
commitment in seeing this through. We would also like to thank “The Big Lottery”
for the grant received towards the completion of Phase 1.
Thank you to Brenda and Matthew Spivey for looking after the wheelie bins at the
cemetery and putting them out for emptying. This is much appreciated.
Dog Fouling: More complaints have been received about the state of the
pavements!
The Dog (Fouling of Land) Act 1996 states that it is an offence for the person in
control of a dog not to clear up after the dog fouls in a public place. Failure to do
so can result in a penalty of up to £1,000. If you have any information regarding
anyone’s failure to pick up after their dog, please contact the Dog Warden at
Teignbridge Council on 01626 215419 or email [email protected].
Planning: "Planning applications for locations within Ide Parish can be viewed on
the Teignbridge District Council website (teignbridge.gov.uk) under Planning and

MOTHERS UNION
The recent Autumn Council meeting was lively and informative. We learned about
MU's role in raising awareness about the "16 days of Activism against Gender
violence" campaign. Also we heard how imaginatively branches throughout the
diocese had celebrated our 140yr anniversary.
Prayer group will meet after the first Wednesday service in both December, and
January. Also in Jan the Epiphany service will be on Friday 6th 2.00pm in
Teignmouth.
We will have a branch New Year Lunch, bring and share, on Wednesday 18th
Jan. 12.30 pm here at my home.
I do hope you all have a happy and peaceful festive season.
With every blessing.
Sue Campbell

JUBILEE CLUB
With Christmas not too far away we were given ideas for decorations at our
meeting on October 31st. Elizabeth Holman demonstrated simple arrangements
using foliage many of us would find in our gardens and hedgerows with the
addition of a few baubles and artificial berries. Greenery set off by some bright
cerise chiffon draped along the mantelpiece and a swag arranged on a length of
rope. It was a pleasure to give Christine, our treasurer for the past eight years, a
gift token and flowers generously donated by club members to celebrate her
special birthday.
On November 14th we were rather a select few for a trip to Kings Garden
Centre. I felt those who went enjoyed the outing, we were so well looked after by
the staff, the food was delicious and it was a relaxing and pleasant day. Jimmy
drove us along the sea front on our way home.
I would like to take this opportunity to wish you all a Happy and Healthy
Christmas.

The Hub@Ide for December and January
The Hub seeks to reach people through listening and then serving. We are
an expression of God’s love in the community.
Looking back: What a busy year it has been…
KFP: We travelled to space, made chocolates for
Fathers’ Day, learned about how our words are an
overflow of what is in our
hearts. We loved making
scarecrows for the Queen’s birthday. We discovered our
senses over the Summer, we watched films and recently
produced beautiful leaf art.
Listening to what you would like, The Hub continued the Coffee mornings,
started a Vinyl club and Film club, and has been running ‘Coffee, chat and
Challenge’ (a monthly Bible Study for those who want to understand more or
deepen their faith). We’ve held 2 successful Prayer for Ide events, walking
around the village praying for families, businesses, and relationships. ‘The Lights
are on’ event on 31st October had over 25 children coming through the doors.
Villagers were very appreciative of hot drinks and somewhere warm to sit on a
cold night. We now have a Red Letterbox on the wall for prayer requests. In
response to the needs of the youth, we launched ‘Download’ (a gaming evening
for Year 3 to Year 9 children). A Mum’s Bible Study group has also started.
7.
Looking forward: Events until Christmas: Remember your loved ones this
Christmas by hanging a decoration on the Christmas Tree in The Hub. Bring your
bauble, messages or handmade decoration to the
church whenever it is open. By Dec 11th (at the Ide
Rocks Christmas sing-a-long) we hope to have all
our loved ones near and far represented on a
fantastically decorated Christmas tree. Suggested
donation of 50p. The church is open every Sunday
morning and evening, and can be opened any
other time by contacting Jackie, Evanne or Fiona. We have decorations if you
want to use ours?
The Christmas Coffee Morning is on Thurs 1st Dec from 10:30am, when children
from Ide Primary will be doing a little performance, and mulled wine with mince
pies will be served. Everyone is invited!
Ide Rocks (The Christmas sing-a-long) 4:30pm 11th Dec, is set to be a lively
afternoon with fun and games for young and old, with your favourite carols,
choruses and hymns played by a live band. Get your seat early or it may be
standing room only…
‘Download’ will happen again on Friday
20th January from 6:30-8:30pm. All children
from Y3 to Y9 are invited to come along,
with permission slips for parent/guardian
signatures are available on the door. Bring
money for tuck, along with your
iPad/kindle/DS etc. Spread the word and
get it in the diary now.
Why do we celebrate Christmas? We celebrate
Christmas because THE BEST GIFT ever given, was from
God. He loves you so much that He wants you to be
complete, to find what you’re looking for in life on
earth and beyond. The gift was Jesus, showed us how
to live a life full of love, joy and forgiveness. Jesus
conquered death, proving that we can have life eternal,
and we celebrate His coming each Christmas. If you
want to know more, please speak to someone from the
Hub or leave a note in the Red Letterbox. Whatever
your traditions, backgrounds or future plans, I pray you
consider the real reason for Christmas this year.

Christmas is now fast approaching and Father Christmas will be coming to Ide on
Saturday, 3rd December. He will be outside the Poachers at 2.15pm and will be
walking down through the village to the Festive Tea in the village Hall. Come

You will see from the above that there is a Carol Service in Church at 6.30pm on
Sunday, 18th December.
No Christmas in Ide would be complete without the Christingle Service on
Christmas Eve at 4pm. At Messy Church on Saturday, 10th December, we will
hope to be recruiting Angels, Shepherds and Wise Men to take part in the Nativity
scene which will be enacted at the Christingle Service.
Sadly at the end of January we shall be saying goodbye to The Revd Stephen
Bessent, who has been looking after us for a number of years. We shall be very
sad to see him go but wish him a very happy and well deserved retirement.

at the local hospital, and digging
trenches for the new
water aid irrigation project.
Please contact me on 07966148840, or

A huge thank you to everyone who took the trouble to sponsor me and Jack
O'Connell for our fund raising efforts for Syria Relief. We went way beyond our
initial target of £360.00, finishing up with more than £1600. This includes a
staggering £127.00 from the Hallowe'en Quiz at The Poachers.
We'll hear details about the children we'll be supporting before Christmas which
I'll share with the readers of the next Ide Times.
Many thanks again!

PAST LIVES
Geneva and WHO?
When I was in my twenties, a friend was very keen to work abroad. We were
both shorthand/typists living in London, so we scanned the London papers. There
were plenty of jobs available and one - working for WHO (The World Health
Organisation) in Geneva sounded so good that I applied as well as Maureen.
The inevitable happened, I got the job and she didn't.
Early one December
morning in 1962 I set off
from Heathrow on a 2year contract to work for
WHO. The pay had
sounded excellent but by
the time it was converted
from American dollars to
Swiss Francs I lost track
of what it was worth. Also,
the cost of living in
Geneva was and still is
very high. I had been put
Geneva
in touch with a girl from
Birmingham, Anne, who
was going out to Geneva on the same day and we had been booked into a
pension (bed & breakfast) together. That afternoon we were taken up to the big
UN building (Palais des Nations) and started work the following morning.
The shorthand/typists, or stenographers as we were called, working for WHO
were mainly British although a few were French speaking. We worked in English I had failed "O" level French - and got away with speaking very little French. We
reckoned we were recruited because we were solid and reliable and would
probably stay the 2-years (which most people did) - we certainly weren't 'high
flyers' and hadn't been to university.
England in the early 60's was very different from today - the only pizza I had ever
eaten had been in Italy and we usually drank tea at home - I don't think instant
coffee had been invented then! Geneva was very different, with food from all
parts of the world readily available, even the Palais cafeteria food seemed exotic
to us English girls. We ate extremely well and also got used to drinking wine on a
regular basis, and even got used to sleeping under duvets rather than sheets and
blankets.
Within a few days, Anne and I had moved out of the pension and into an
apartment together. However, a few months later we went our separate ways and
I moved in with two others where we had separate bedsits but shared the kitchen
and bathroom, which suited me better.
13.
We had been assured that it rarely snowed in Geneva but the winter of 1962/3
was extremely cold all over Europe, including the UK, and Geneva was covered in
snow and ice for months. However, all accommodation was centrally heated and
of course the UN building was nice and warm too, so we were better off than our
families back in England.
At Christmas a group of us took a
bus to Chamonix, where I bought
my first anorak and enjoyed the
wonderful Christmas card scenery.
Anoraks were not available in the
ordinary shops in England in those
days - we wore woollen winter
coats in cold weather!
At weekends we could catch a bus
or train and walk in the mountains
and in due course ventured further
afield. There was a branch of Thos
Cooke in the Palais, so at
lunchtimes we amused ourselves
booking weekends away. Venice,
Florence and even Rome were only
a train ride away and there was
always someone looking for friends
My first Anorak
to go away with. Thos Cooke would
happily give us local bus and train
times, recommend a b&b in Rome, or wherever, and book it for you and sort out
which currency we needed – they made travelling so easy.
When Spring came I joined the walking group and we would go off early on
Sunday mornings to walk in the Jura or the French Alps. The walks were graded
and I always avoided the very difficult ones - even so there were some hairy
moments when paths had been washed away! No, I didn't learn to ski but we did
go up in the cable cars, go for a walk, and watch people skiing. We often took the
train to the other end of the lake and spent weekends in mountain villages.
Keeping in touch with home was not as simple as it is today. Although we had a
phone in the flat we used to go to the Post Office and book calls to the UK and
pay straight away. This avoided arguments when it came to sorting out phone
bills and I don't think it was possible to dial direct. No mobile phones or
computers in those days. Contact with home was usually by letter.
Geneva is built on the edge of the lake and from the Palais you look down across
the lawns to the water and in the distance on the other side you can see the Mont
Blanc range of mountains. You could sit in the cafeteria and admire the wonderful
view. However, we could have done without the noise of the wretched peacocks!
14.
The French that we had learnt at school often let us down! The complicated word
for 90 in French is quatre-vingt-dix but the local word was "nenente" (I've no idea
how to spell it) - they certainly didn't teach us that at school. However, we soon
got the hang of it all and survived. Some girls did speak good French, which was
very useful on occasions - I can remember someone translating what was
happening when the news was breaking that J.F.Kennedy had been shot in
America.
At the end of my 2-year contract I came back to England and got a job in Exeter.
My father had retired and my parents had moved out of London to Clacton on Sea
- not somewhere that I wanted to live - and I thought it would be nice to live in
Devon, with its beautiful countryside, where I had been evacuated during the war
years. I did miss the mountains though!

A reminder, although I’m sure none is needed
So that we don’t risk mis-selling this event, I’m afraid I have to tell you that Pete
Bishop was a little premature in his claim that the Andrews sisters have been
booked .I have checked and they are deceased and so sadly will not be with
us. The president and vice-president are, however, both very familiar with
many of their songs and might be persuaded to give a rendering of some of
these, after the formal business of the meeting is concluded!
Many thanks to Bizarro.com for permission to share this cartoon with you.

THE WEST TOWN FARM COMMUNITY TRUST NEWS
The farm has been taking advantage of the dry weather and leaving
the cows in the fields for longer. Once the weather changes we will
move them into the barns and give the pasture a chance to
rejuvenate.
We’ve had a lot of educational visits
this month, more than usual at this time
of year, thanks to the warmer weather.
They’ve been apple pressing and
enjoying lots of walks around the farm.
On Bonfire Night we enjoyed the
fantastic view we have over Exeter.
The Twinners/Poachers looked like
they put on a brilliant show.
Now it’s December I can officially
mention the C word. CHRISTMAS! We
will be having a fresh meat week between 19th-23rd December, where you can
get beef, lamb and pork cuts. Phone us on 01392 811257 to place an order, we
can deliver locally.
We will be running the BBQ at The Shillingford Organics traditional Christmas
fayre on the 11th December between 12-6pm.
Wishing everyone in the village a very Merry Christmas and Happy New year.
