Self-esteem refers to
how we understand and
value ourselves (a
measure of our self
worth).
1.Ask students what they think self-esteem is? Separate the words ‘self’ and ‘esteem’
using the board and facilitate a discussion with students as to what the term means – can
add words under each heading. (Self-me; Esteem –how much we like ourselves, are happy
with, or feel happy about, or admire (look up to) ourselves)
2.Ask students if the words were joined together what could they mean?
*Using the board join the words together from the brainstorm session eg; me-like myself
3. Ask students what a negative self-esteem could look or feel like? (withdrawn, scared or
nervous, unsure, unhappy, NOT about losing/coming last) . *Teacher to give an example of
Healthy self-esteem is
having a positive
attitude towards self
and others. A person
with high self-esteem
is content in their
strengths, and
acknowledges
vulnerabilities in
themselves and others.
someone looking unsure or nervous.
4. Ask students what positive self-esteem could look or feel like? (confident, happy, trying
new things, doing the best I can, (NOT about winning/being the best or better than others)
Teacher asks students to stand up and stand like someone who has a positive self-esteem
stands. Prompt students to think of a time when they felt really happy and confident
(students stand up straight with their heads high) How do you feel? Then they sit back
down.
5. Discuss with students that self-esteem relates to how they think about themselves,
what they believe about themselves. Ask the students, if they could choose either a
positive self-esteem or a negative self-esteem, which would they choose, positive or
negative self-esteem?
6. Go back to the student’s examples of what positive and negative self-esteem looks like.
Encourage/challenge students to all ‘look like’ they have a positive self-esteem for the day.
Reaffirm that they can choose their self-esteem.
