It takes courage to follow your dreams. Students at Indian River State
College (IRSC) are taking the first steps to achieving their dreams of
higher education and a better life.
Many students find it difficult to envision themselves ever attending
college. Lack of finances and family support are obstacles which must
be overcome.
The IRSC Foundation is dedicated to helping all deserving students with
scholarship assistance. These students will succeed if someone believes
in their dreams.
You can make a big difference - help us to help students and our
community.

Partners in
Education
Ann L. Decker
Executive Director, IRSC Foundation
Through the generous support of our community
partners, The IRSC Foundation was pleased to assist
more than 2,700 students with scholarship funds to
cover tuition and books in 2014. These efforts were
vital in helping more students persist in their studies
through to completion.
Unfortunately, we’ve turned away thousands because
we simply don’t have the needed funds to assist every
qualified student. Last year alone, the Foundation
office received 5,386 scholarship applications and aid
requests, 2,686 more than we were able to fulfill.
Turning away promising students in need is difficult,
which is why we’re seeking your help. Please consider
supporting the Foundation for the first time or
increasing your previous level of support – even a small
monthly donation can change a student’s life.
Education truly transforms lives and begins a positive
cycle for generations, helping our community to
flourish.
Please give today - we welcome your partnership,
whether it is through financial gifts, with service as a
volunteer, or by sharing your special talents.

scholarships provided
a way for me to
continue my education
and better myself
and my family.
- Kamron Pratt, R.N.
6
A Tradition of Service
When Kamron Pratt was young, he dreamed of being a super hero - fighting evil and saving
others.
After graduating from high school, he joined the U.S. Navy as a member of the medical
team where he served four years in Iraq. Kamron then returned to Fort Pierce and looked
to Indian River State College to continue his education.
When choosing a major, Kamron was influenced by his work in the military and by a
physician who told him that he would be an excellent nurse. “I remembered that I wanted
to be a super hero. I considered becoming a firefighter, but I really like the caring aspect
of helping others who are facing health challenges,” Kamron states.
Kamron enrolled at Indian River State College, earning an Associate in Arts Degree in
2012 and an Associate in Science Degree in Nursing in 2014. Married with two sons,
Kamron struggled financially while he was completing his degrees.
“My first priority is to be a good provider for my family. I first had to pay our household
bills, then school costs would come after that,” Kamron recalls.
Kamron worked full time at the St. Lucie County Jail while taking a full load of college
classes. “If anyone tells me that it is too hard to attend college and work full-time, I
always say, ‘It won’t be easy, but you can do it.’”
In 2014 Kamron accepted a full-time position as a Registered Nurse at Lawnwood Regional
Medical Center, and in 2015 he earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing from IRSC. His
degree gets him one step closer to becoming an officer in the U.S. Navy.
He and his wife recently celebrated the birth of their third son. Kamron is keenly aware of
the role he plays in their future.
“Thinking of my sons pushes me every day. I am determined that they will have the
opportunity to attend college. The scholarship assistance I received helped not only me,
but also the next generation. My nephews and nieces are following in my footsteps, and
our sons will have more choices than I did.”
Kamron is an example of how working hard, remaining committed to serving others, and
being a good role model can help change many lives. In so many ways, he has achieved
his dream of becoming a super hero.
“I am so grateful for every day – I am fortunate to be alive and to be free to make my own
decisions,” Kamron says.

The Full Circle Living Her Dream
“Although my parents’ modest income could not afford to send us to college,
it didn’t stop them from encouraging us to pursue our dreams.”
-Eduarda Anselmo, Take Stock in Children Scholarship Recipient
Eduarda Anselmo knows about following her dreams. From her humble beginnings
in Mexico to her current position as a high school teacher, Eduarda always strived to
achieve more.
“Ever since I can remember, I aspired to be a teacher. I guess I was inspired by the great
teachers I had when I moved to this country,” Eduarda recalls.
Eduarda entered the United States at six years old, one of four children of her father,
a field laborer, and her mother, a housewife. Her dream to become a teacher seemed
difficult, but she continued to work hard and make good grades.
“During my freshman year in high school, my prayers were answered. I received the gift
of hope. I became a Take Stock in Children Scholarship recipient,” Eduarda recalls.
The Take Stock in Children Scholarship Program selects deserving students in middle
or high school and challenges them to complete high school, meet regularly with an
adult mentor, and remain drug and crime free. Eduarda met the challenge and received
four years of tuition to attend Indian River State College and Florida Atlantic University.
Following graduation, she began teaching Spanish at Okeechobee High School.
Ten years have passed since Eduarda received her high school diploma and Take Stock
Scholarship. She recently completed her Master’s Degree, fulfilling her “American dream.”
“I wouldn’t be teaching today if it weren’t for scholarship donors. Because of their
kindness, less fortunate people have the opportunity to pursue their dreams and make a
difference in the lives of others,” says Eduarda.
An active mentor for the Take Stock in Children program, Eduarda sees a bit of herself in
every student she mentors.
The Indian River State College Foundation is the lead agency for the Take Stock in
Children Scholarship Program in Indian River, Martin, Okeechobee, and St. Lucie
counties. Local donations support local students, helping them to achieve their dreams.

Sponsoring the
José and Fran Farinos Design Review Studio
“We understand the value and impact that access to affordable
education has in the sustainability of our community. IRSC is our
best resource for education and training in the region.”
José Farinos
Vice President of Applied Science and Technology
As a longtime IRSC employee, José Farinos and his wife Fran stepped forward
to sponsor the Design Review Studio at the Brown Center for Innovation and
Entrepreneurship. The college’s newest facility is located at the Main Campus in Fort
Pierce.
“Fran and I are parents, educators, and had our own business in the past. We believe
that it is up to us to assume part of the responsibility of supporting and nurturing this
critical resource for the present and future of our community if we want to maintain our
quality of life. As an architect, I could not pass up the opportunity to name a room that
promotes quality in design,” José Farinos states.
Through donations to the IRSC Foundation, employees, individuals, and businesses
have sponsored classrooms, laboratories and buildings at IRSC. College employees
take special pride in joining the efforts to keep IRSC at the top of the curve.
“Every small gift can make a difference for a student in need. Scholarships, endowed
chairs, named classrooms and laboratories contribute to make our college better and
improve the experience of our students. Employees, more than anybody else, need to
be part of this support infrastructure,” Farinos explains.
Enhanced IRSC facilities benefit not only students, but members of the community as
well. Facilities provide venues for meetings, workshops, conferences, and educational
offerings for residents.
“It is important for our community to have facilities like the Brown Center for Innovation
and Entrepreneurship, where students can have access to education and training
otherwise unavailable within reasonable distance and at an affordable cost. These
resources and our commitment to embrace new technologies give future businesses
the confidence that we can and will train their workforce when they move to our area,”
Farinos states.
Hundreds of IRSC employees support the college’s mission through annual gifts to the
IRSC Foundation. Like José and Fran Farinos, these employees believe that supporting
IRSC is an investment in their shared future.

Legacy Spotlight:
Lawrence and Meredith Breault
Partners in business and in life, Larry and Meredith Breault owned an Executive
Recruitment business in New Jersey for 34 years. They relocated to Port St. Lucie
25 years ago, where this generous couple operates “under the radar” and seeks
no recognition for their volunteer efforts.
Community service is part of their “Plan B” following their retirement. Larry states, “As Albert Einstein
said ‘Life is like a bicycle. To keep your balance, you need to keep moving.’ At our age and station in
life, we’re happy to give back to local nonprofits, especially those focused on young, disadvantaged
children. Children need to be helped at a very early age before they fall too far behind the curve.”
In 2000, the Breaults established an endowed scholarship
at IRSC and have since annually donated funds to assist 14
students with scholarships valued at $9,400. As a member
of the Port St. Lucie Sunset Rotary, Larry encouraged the
organization to support scholarships, resulting in more than
$22,000 in support for IRSC students.
The Breaults are also active volunteers with the Service Corps
of Retired Executives (SCORE), which helps entrepreneurs
create successful businesses. This results in the creation of
jobs in the community and helps the economic development of
our area.
Through their active support of area nonprofits, Larry and
Meredith Breault are making a difference now. Through their
estate plans, this generous couple will continue to help others
well into the future.
Larry states, “There is so much to do and so little time and
resources to achieve the goals of our community service
organizations. How do we draw out volunteers to work with us? How do we get a message to the wealthy
in our communities that they can’t take it with them, but they can look with pride at what they accomplish
today by sharing their gift of treasure?”
Larry and Meredith Breault epitomize the expression “leading by example.” Fortunately for our community,
their legacy of generosity and leadership will continue beyond their lifetimes.
There are many different types of planned gifts that can help you to
provide for your family, enjoy significant tax advantages, and help
students at IRSC. To learn more, visit our planned giving website at
