Newsletter April 2017 Don’t forget to check our website for dates/information www.mulbartonjunior.org.uk Welcome back to the final term of this school year. I hope you all had an enjoyable break. Over the Easter break the corridor and entrance of the school was decorated and, I hope you agree, gives a much better look to the school. The decorating will be continuing over the next two holidays. Thank you to those who entered the competition to design our next school logo. Staff are currently voting to get a final 6 to carry forward for the children, yourselves and governors to vote on. Following a monitoring visit from the LA (which was very positive) we have decided to action one of the suggestions put to us as a school. The suggestion was that the children's handwriting and presentation, across both schools, was not reflecting the excellent learning taking place. We have therefore decided to launch an 8 week plan to improve this area. The children were told about this in assemblies on Friday and are keen to be involved. We will be sending home guidance on how you can support your child with this and ask for your involvement. Over the next 8 weeks we will keep you updated and hopefully we will see big changes. This term we will be continuing to work towards becoming a primary school. The children have an exciting and busy term ahead with many learning opportunities which we hope they will enjoy. Please send in your questions for the parents’ forum by Thursday 4th May ready for the evening of Monday 8th. The forum starts at 7pm. Thank you for your continued support. Bev Theobald ‘PARENTALK LIVE’ Event Care for the Family will be at ‘The Space’ Norwich NR7 8SQ on 13th June for a ‘Parentalk Live’ evening, 7:30 – 10:00pm, for parents of children up to early teens. This week we are holding another Book Fair, this time with the special offer of ‘3 books for the price or 2’! The children will have an opportunity to browse through the shelves during the school day and the Fair is open to buy books 8:20 – 8:50am and 3:15 – 3:45pm each day. As always there is a selection of books to suit everyone, including picture books for younger readers as well as more challenging reads for 11-12 year olds. The school receives commission on sales, which we will use to buy new books for the library, so do please support us. Lunchtime Book Club Our lunchtime book club was very successful last half term and we would like to thank Clare Pipe for running it for us. Unfortunately Clare is not able to continue doing this so we are looking for another volunteer. Please contact the school office if you are interested. His parents have set up a charity called ‘Finnbars Force’ as he was a great follower of Star Wars! The charity’s work is to support parents with children with similar diagnosis, helping with travel, accommodation etc. alongside funding for a specialist paediatric nurse to support families through decision making and to access all agencies quickly and effectively. To raise money and awareness for this charity, Woodside Infants are holding a dressing up day - “May the 4th be with you” - and we have decided to join with them. So on Thursday 4th May the children can come dressed in Star Wars themed clothing, or in any other nonuniform of their choice. (We do not expect parents to purchase/hire fancy dress!) If you wish to take part, please send your child with a £1.00 donation on the day so we can help raise valuable funds for this very worthwhile charity. Maths Corner Watch out! Our Maths Monkeys have arrived! We would like to introduce you to some new members of our school. Here are the Maths Monkeys! Each class has its own Maths Monkey and the children are invited to take it in turns to take him or her home with them and do some Maths! Each Maths Monkey has its own diary to record what it has been up to. When it is your child’s turn to bring the Maths Monkey home, please could you think of some Maths they could do together and encourage your child to record it in the diary? If you could take a photo of the Maths Monkey doing Maths with your child as well, that would be great! You don’t have to stick to doing Maths at home, you could take the Maths Monkey to the shops, supermarket or the beach! Here are a few ideas that Maths Monkey could do: Cooking / baking A visit to the shop to buy some sweets! Sorting stickers into a repeating pattern Organising and classifying toys, books or cars Guessing the missing number on the fridge Helping children to learn times tables facts Finding and identifying 2D and 3D shapes Exploring patterns Collecting and displaying data Playing Maths games on the computer Playing chess or other board games Looking for differences and similarities Using reasoning, fluency and problem solving skills Have fun! Mrs Penton, Maths Co-ordinator. NB Special thanks go to Mrs Patricia Warnes for patiently knitting us 8 maths monkeys! Staff Changes As you will know from the letter emailed out last week, Mrs Burchell will be leaving us at half term. We are all very sad to see her go and she will be missed by both staff and children alike. We plan to give her a good send off so if you would like to contribute to a present for her then please send it in to the school office in a sealed envelope. If you wish to include a message with your donation please do so and this will be added to her leaving card. From 5th June Mrs Brooks will be job sharing teaching 4B alongside Mrs Bird. We have also appointed Ms Joanna Kloss to teach alongside Mr Smith in 5S for the summer term. Friends’ Events Our bingo evening last term was a big success and we are pleased to tell you there will be another Bingo evening on Friday 19th May. As before, we are asking for donations of prizes which the children should bring into school on Friday 12th May. Anyone who does bring in a prize can wear non-uniform on Friday 12th. This year the Summer Fayre, which is being held jointly with the Infant school, will be on Friday 23rd June, 5pm – 7pm. The theme will be ‘Musicals’ and every class will be performing. Please make a note of this date and keep an eye out for more details coming home nearer the time. Vacancy for Midday Supervisor We are looking to appoint a Midday Supervisory Assistant. The hours are 12:15 1:15pm every day. Please apply to the school office if you are interested in this post. Your application needs to be on the Norfolk County Council application form which can be found on the Norfolk County schools website or through the office. Riding Scooters and Bicycles to School Now that the better weather is here, more children may wish to come to school on their scooters or bicycles. While I am happy to encourage this if children are going to ride responsibly, I would be grateful for your support with the following: Your child must be competent enough to cycle on the road (not the pavement). If using a scooter, they must be considerate of pedestrians using the path. Please encourage your child to wear a helmet if cycling. All bicycles and scooters must be left in the shelter and should be locked. The school will not be responsible for any loss or damage while on the school site. Scooters and bicycles should never be ridden on the school site, e.g. on the playground, for the safety of other children. This also applies to skateboards. If concerns are raised by staff or a member of the public about a child’s ability to ride safely and considerately, either on the road or pavement, parents will be contacted. Lunchtime and After School Activities ‘The Hub’ is open Monday, Thursday & Friday lunchtimes, in 5W classroom, 12:40 – 1:10.
