During the Second Annual Snyder Academy Awards, held on October 20, 2016, a restored portrait of Isaac Halsted Williamson,
8th Governor of NJ and 13th Mayor of Elizabeth, was unveiled. The portrait, whose provenance is unknown, was found in the
collections of the Monmouth County Archives and transferred to the city of Elizabeth in November 2014. Restoration work, which
was performed by Snyder Academy Artist-in-Residence, Rafael Rodriguez, began in the winter of 2015. The portrait has been
added to the collection of the Local History and Special Collections Department of the Elizabeth Public Library and plans are in
place for permanent exhibition.
Isaac H. Williamson was born in Elizabethtown (Elizabeth), N.J. on September 27, 1767. He studied with his brother, Matthias
Williamson, one of the leading lawyers in the state, and was admitted to the bar in 1791. He advanced to counselor in 1796 and
to sergeant-at-law in 1804. It was during this time that Isaac became involved in politics, and as a Democrat was elected to
represent Essex County in the New Jersey State Assembly in 1815. When Governor Dickerson resigned, Williamson was elected
Governor of New Jersey and was re-elected for 12 consecutive years. After leaving the office of Governor in 1829, Williamson
would go on to be Mayor of Elizabethtown from 1830 to 1833. He also was a member of the New Jersey State Senate from
1831 to 1833; and served as president of the 1844 State Constitutional Convention. Governor Isaac H. Williamson passed away
on July 10, 1844 in Elizabeth.
The portrait now owned by the Library is deemed a ‘copy,’ with an additional ‘copy’ owned by Princeton University. The original
now hangs in the State Capitol in Trenton.

Girls Who Code was founded with a single mission: to close the
gender gap in technology
Girls Who Code has gone from 20 girls in New York to 10,000 girls
in 42 states. That’s the same number of girls who graduate each
year with a degree in computer science.
When girls learn to code, they become change agents in their
communities. Whether it’s a game to illustrate the experience of an
undocumented immigrant or a website to provide free college prep,
our girls create technology that makes the world a better place.
Orientation Dates:
December 14: 5:30pm-6:30pm
December 17: 1pm-2pm
The program is open to boys
and girls
in grades 6-8.
