Day 8: Cuzco - Lima - Fly to Easter Island
Fly from Cuzco to Lima before boarding your overnight flight to legendary Easter Island.
Day 9: Easter Island
Arrive early this morning at “Isla de Pascua” or “Rapa Nui” as it is known in the local Polynesian language. The most isolated inhabited island in the
world, steeped in lore and most famously home to the enigmatic moai sculptures, this place is an archaeologist’s dream. The Polynesian Rapanui people
are believed to have arrived on the island in the 8th century, but by the 19th century they had almost disappeared due to overpopulation and
deforestation. Explore Hanga Roa, the only town on the island, and home to less than 4,000 residents. Tonight, enjoy a Rapa Nui folklore show
showcasing native dance, costumes and music. Then, settle into your island lodge. (B, D)
Day 10: Easter Island
This morning, visit the Rano Rakaru volcanic crater, the quarry and birthplace of the more than 800 moai statues scattered around the island. See nearly
400 of these massive monoliths in varying states of completion. Enjoy spectacular views of the ethereal landscape on all sides. Perhaps climb to the
crater’s edge to view Ahu Tongariki, the largest collection of upright moai on the island. Ponder the creation and purpose of the moais while relaxing on
the white-sand Anakena Beach – legend holds that King Hotu Matu’a first landed here. Continue to the south coast of Easter Island and Poike Peninsula
- formed by an extinct volcano. See the toppled Ahu Vaihu and Ahu Akahanga moai sites. The decline of the Rapanui culture caused war and
destruction across the island. Those moai erected today have been restored by archaeologists. On the western coast, take in the views at the pink-sand
Ovahe beach, overlooked by the Ahu Nau Nau and Ahu Te Pito Kura moai platforms. Ahu Te Pito Kura means “navel of the earth” – this ahu once
supported the largest moai ever transported. Now lying face down with the top knot knocked off, it measures 33 feet. (B, L)
Day 11: Easter Island
Head to the north coast of Easter Island. Witness the Cave of Two Windows with views to the sea through the cliff openings. At Ana Te Pahu learn how
caves inside lava tubes were used as a refuge from battles. At Ana Kai Tangata, another sea-cliff cave, see magnificent carved petroglyphs of
prehistoric birds. Then, visit Orongo at the base of Rano Kau volcano. Learn about the Birdman Cult’s unique ceremonies and rituals and see beautiful
petroglyphs of the “birdman,” a figure central in Rapa Nui art and beliefs. Enjoy the remainder of the day at leisure to explore on your own. Browse the
shops in Hanga Roa or perhaps visit the Sebastian Englert Anthropology Museum for more insight into the remote and mysterious Rapa Nui culture.

Day 12: Easter Island - Depart for Home
Say goodbye to magical Easter Island. (B)
AVAILABLE OPTIONS:
Cuzco
The Inca Terraces at Moray and the Sacred Valley Salt Mines • $75.00
Discover the enigmatic circular terraces at Moray and the amazing sight of the “Salineras” salt mines in the Sacred Valley during your half day
adventure from Cuzco. Venture off the beaten path, journeying past quaint villages, spectacular Andean vistas and wide open fields of Peruvian crops.
When you arrive at the Inca Terraces at Moray, explore each level of this artistically-designed Incan construction using the original Inca stone stairs! The
concentric ring terraces and their meaning to the Incas will mesmerize you; these terraces were perhaps used as an experimental agricultural
development site by the Incas; the rings are set deep into the earth so that each terrace reaches a different microclimate. Wind down the hillside towards
Urubamba and behold the awe-inspiring Salineras salt pans! Behold thousands of individual ancient salt mines carved into the terraces cascading down
the mountain. An underground spring fills the pools causing the salt to crystallize as the water evaporates. As a result, a white quilt work pattern covers
the hillside. Since Incan times, families have passed down ownership of the pools and have made a living from this special place. A truly unique sight to
behold, you will never forget your exploration of this remote and spectacularly unique phenomenon.
Machu Picchu
Bird Walk • $65.00
Discover a bird-lover’s paradise when you visit the Machu Picchu Sanctuary – an area rich in biodiversity, due to varying microclimates between the
Andes and the Amazon. An expert guide takes you on a nature walk that starts near by the hotel, on the road to Puente Ruinas, where you’ll spot some of
the unique creatures found here in the midst of lush cloud-forest vegetation and the soothing sounds of the Vilcanota River. Over 400 species of birds
and approximately 700 kinds of butterflies flock to this wild paradise where 200 species of orchids create a colorful canvas. The Torrent duck – the only
duck in the world that can dive and swim in rushing rapids; the ornamental Andean Cock of the Rock – Peru’s national bird; the tame cinnamon
flycatcher; the Giant Hummingbird; and the colorful Blue and Yellow Tanager are some of the delightful species waiting to be discovered and
photographed on your tranquil nature exploration in the town of Aguas Calientes, just steps outside of the hotel.
