Glen Helen Homeschool Fall Classes
The new Glen Helen Homeschool Classes are hands-on, science-based classes that offer exciting, outdoor
learning opportunities and meet current Ohio Academic Content Standards. Classes are offered Thursdays
from 1-3 pm out of Trailside Museum at 405 Corry Street, Yellow Springs, Ohio . We will alternate
weekly between two age groupings: Kindergarten- 3rd grade and 4th- 8th grade students.
Instructor- Classes are led by Ellen Biscotti, Glen Helen’s
Extension Naturalist. Ellen Biscotti was a Naturalist for the
Glen Helen Outdoor Education Center during the 2011-2012
school year, and is excited to be returning this year as
Extension Naturalist. Ellen is from the Cleveland area and
attributes much of her love of the outdoors to time spent in
the Cuyahoga Valley National Park with her family. She
graduated from Kenyon College in 2011 with a degree in
biology and is experienced in working with children of all
ages!
Cost: $2 per student, per class. Please make checks payable
to Glen Helen Outdoor Education Center.
Registration- Please pre-register for classes to ensure
adequate materials. Registration can be completed in person,
by phone/email, or by mailing the form at the bottom of this
page.

November/December 2012 Schedule:
November 1st – Stream Study (Grades 4-8): Use
the scientific method to conduct an experiment
assessing the health of a local creek by looking at
chemical tests and tiny organisms.
November 8th – Ohio Pioneers (Grades K-3):
Learn about the historical human inhabitants of
this area. We will explore the land using maps and
building basic shelters.
November 15th - Ohio Wilderness: History and
Survival (Grades 4-8): Teaching more in-depth
wilderness skills such as using a map and compass
much like early travelers of Ohio.
November 29th – Energy Exploration (Grades
K-3): Take a look at energy sources, such as solar,
wind and coal. We will make a solar craft and learn
how plants use the sun’s energy to make food.
December 6th – Physics and Fire (Grades 4-8):
Build on your survival skills and explore physics
through multiple fire-building techniques.
December 13th – Dirt Won’t Hurt! (Grades K3): Discover how soil is formed and what soil is
anyway. Learn about decomposers and the role
they play in ecosystems.
December 20th – The Weatherman Says…
(Grades 4-8): Learn about what causes weather,
and how the weather affects living and non-living
things.
