A PARTICULAR COW by Mem Fox You are bound to find yourself giggling to this funny story about a particular cow who finds herself on the wrong side of a pair of bloomers. With disastrous (and hilarious) events to follow, it’s no ordinary Saturday walk for this cow! DID YOU K NOW? Stories that feature a series of disastrous events are very popular with children. They follow an order in which things go wrong, and often have your child’s imagination running wild with other possible mishaps. B E F O R E R E A DI NG Ask your child and explain to them what ‘particular’ means. Show them the cover and talk about what makes this cow particular from other cows, like its fur colour or its smiling face. Talk about where cows live and what might be around this particular cow’s home. W HI L E Y O U A R E R E A DI N G As the cow’s Saturday walk gets more and more out of hand, exaggerate the voices and expressions of the many characters in the story. You may mention who is following the cow and how many people she interrupts throughout the story, such as the ‘particular woman’ and the ‘particular postman’. A F T E R Y O U F INI S H R E A DI N G Talk to your child about a time they remember when a few things went wrong, one after another. You could draw a cartoon of it on a piece of paper. Try making a puppet of the particular cow, and use other toys to reenact the story when you take your child for a walk around the house or through the garden.
