Year 2 Curriculum Overview English Computing As readers the children will be exploring the ‘Sir Charlie Stinky Socks’ series by Kristina Stephenson. They will make inferences about characters’ feelings based on what has been said and done, and make predictions about what might happened next. They will identify and discuss language techniques such as rhythm, rhyme and alliteration in humorous poetry. As writers the children will plan, then write their own story about Sir Charlie, as well as using the language techniques identified in reading to write their own tongue twisters, nonsense verse and riddles. As speakers and listeners they will orally retell Sir Charlie Stinky Socks stories that they have read, as well as those that they have written themselves. They will perform tongue twisters and nonsense poems using actions or sound effects to add to the humour. As technologists the children will learn how to take quality photographs on the Learn Pads, and how to edit them to gain a desired effect. Art & Design As artists the children will design their own coat of arms and use templates to cut the sections from felt. They will learn how to use a running stitch to sew the pieces together. Mathematics As mathematicians the children will learn to recognise the place value of each digit in a two digit number; to compare and order numbers, and to read and write numbers in numerals and words. They will be adding and subtracting pairs of numbers using concrete objects, pictorial representations and mentally, and applying all of their new learning to solving problems. The children will learn to recognise and use the symbols for pounds and pence; to total amounts and to find change. They will find, name and write the fractions 1/2, 1/3, 1/4, 2/4 and 3/4 of a length, shape, and set of objects, and recognise the equivalence of 2/4 and 1/2. Science As scientists the children will learn the names of common materials, and vocabulary that can be used to describe their properties. They will explore what happens when different forces are applied to a range of materials. History As historians the children will begin their overarching topic with a visit to Warwick Castle. Using this as a stimulus, as well as a range of other sources, they will learn about types of castle, external features and the rooms inside. They will learn about the people that lived in castles and what happened during a siege. PE Geography .As geographers the children will use aerial photographs to recognise basic human and physical features of castles, and use geographical vocabulary to describe these features. Music As musicians the children will learn how simple tunes are made of different pitches. They will respond to changes in pitch and understand that instruments can produce different pitches. They will learn how to control the pitch of their voice. As competitors the children will throw, catch and bounce balls in different ways when standing still and on the move. They will also have the opportunity to complete a programme of yoga with Penny. PSHE As citizens the children will learn to recognise, name and deal with different emotions in a positive way. They will learn to communicate their thoughts and opinions, and about the importance of listening to those of other people. RE As theologians the children will learn that the Torah is a special book to Jewish people. They will learn how it influences their lives, and explore some of the stories featured within it. Timetable Monday: Miss Sorrell in school. P.E. Games (outdoors) Tuesday: Miss Sorrell in school. P.E. Yoga (indoors) Wednesday: Mrs Sibson in school. Thursday: Mrs Sibson and Miss Sorrell in school. Homework handed in, spelling test and library books changed (if needed). Friday: Miss Sorrell in school. New homework and spellings set. Homework Please continue to hear your child read as often as you can and make comments about how they are getting on. It is important that your child understands and can talk about what they are reading, as well as decoding the words. Please use the suggested questions handed out at Autumn Parents’ Evening to help you with this. Each week the children will be given some spellings to learn at home. If you wish to extend them further, you could ask them to put each word into a sentence in their spelling book. The children will also be asked to complete a ‘Learning Journal’ as part of their homework. They will be asked to demonstrate their learning from literacy, mathematics or topic sessions that week, and they may choose their own way of doing so. Spellings and homework will be given on Fridays for completion by the following Thursday, when spellings will also be tested.
