Lye SAFETY!
HANDLING LYE:
Lye is a hazardous substance and should be treated carefully. It is safe for use in
home soapmaking but some precautions must be taken:
Always wear protective goggles! Getting lye, water with dissolved lye in it or fresh
soap in your eyes is an emergency. The best way to handle a lye emergency is to
prevent it. If an accident does occur, immediately run your eye under cold water
and seek medical help.
Always wear protective clothing. Once you mix your lye with water, it will heat up
quickly due to a chemical reaction. If you splash or spill lye on your skin, you will get
a chemical burn. Protect your hands with gloves, and wear long sleeved clothing.
Keep a bottle of vinegar nearby to neutralize a lye burn and USE IT if you spill lye
water or fresh soap on yourself. Alternatively, you can rinse lye water or fresh soap
off with cold water and soap. It may not hurt instantly but a splash can cause damage.
Mix lye in a large heat-safe container, preferably inside of a sink. If you prefer, you
can mix your lye outdoors.
Always ADD LYE TO WATER. Sprinkle the lye on top of the water for best results,
and stir with a stainless steel spoon or heat resistant plastic utensil. Never pour
water onto a pile of dry lye, a severe, volcanic reaction can occur. Work in a well
ventilated area and avoid breathing in lye fumes (these are strongest when you first
add the lye to the water).
Do not allow children or pets into your soaping space while you are working.
Use dedicated soap making utensils and tools. Don’t use your soap tools to make
food.

Before starting to make soap, use this handy Cheat Sheet to make sure you have
everything ready.
1. Children and pets out of the area
2. 1 uninterrupted hour available to you
3. All work surfaces covered with newspaper or sheets to protect against spills
4. All oils weighed out (if necessary)
5. Mold choice fully prepared (lined if necessary)
6. Water measured out
7. Lye weighed out
8. Fragrance Oil weighed out
9. Colorant prepared (pre-mixed or measured out)
10. All utensils at the ready; stainless steel spoons, stick blenders, spatulas clean and ready to go.
Now that everything is fully prepped, it’s time for action!
1. Put your gloves and goggles on.
2. Add your lye to your water, stirring slowly with your stainless steel or heat-safe stir ring utensil. Take care to not breathe in lye fumes.
3. Once all grains or flakes are mixed in, set lye water safely aside.
4. Mix all of your pre-weighed oils into a large heat safe bowl. It should not be over 50% filled at this point.
5. Melt your oils so they are around 120 to 140 degrees.
6. If your lye water is cooled below 140 degrees, add your lye water to your oils.
7. Slowly pulse your stick blender on and off, moving it around the bowl so that all parts of the soap mixture are getting agitated and blended.
8. Once your soap has reached thin trace, add your colorant and any additives.
9. When your color is mixed in, add your fragrance oil. Whisk your fragrance oil in.
10. Pour soap into your prepared mold.
11. Cover your soap with saran wrap or a cardboard cover.
12. Insulate with towels.
13. cut within 2-4 days
14. Cure for 4 to 6 weeks before using, giving away or selling.
QUICK MIX OILS - Swirl
The Bramble Berry Soap Quick Mix Oils are an easy way for you to save time weighing and blending oils. We’ve done all the work for you. Your oils may arrive liquid,
solid or a combination depending on the time of year and the conditions the oils
traveled in. If the oil is solid or a combination, make sure to fully mix and stir the
blend before use. This bag comes with an additional 0.3 ounces of oil in it (to account for a little being left in the bag as you pour) so you DO NOT need to reweigh
the oils if using the entire bag. If you are not using the entire bag and are creating
your own, small recipe (see instructions below), you will need to weigh your oils, lye
and water.

Oil and Vitamin E. It produces a recipe that gives
plenty of time to swirl or do intricate recipes. The
resulting soap has a conditioning feel with stable,
creamy bubbles. Because of the lathering properties, this recipe does best at a 7% superfat or
below.
The combined SAP value of Swirl Quick Mix is
.14613
Water Amount:
Ideal water amount for Swirl Quick Mix is 33% (or .33). The full range of Swirl Quick
Mix for water is 25% to 41%. To make things easy, right in the middle is literally
double the amount of your lye (easy!)
Recipe:
To make 5 pounds of soap, your bag comes with 54 ounces of oil. You will mix 7.5 oz
of sodium hydroxide BY WEIGHT into 18 ounces of water to make your full 5 pound
recipe. This is a 5% superfat.
To make 10 pounds of soap, your two bags come with 54 ounces of oil each, or 108
total ounces of the mixture. You will mix 15.0 oz. BY WEIGHT of sodium hydroxide
into 36 ounces of water to make your full 10 pound recipe. This is a 5% superfat.

What if you want to make a 7 pound batch of soap? It’s easy to figure out! You can
either go to the special mini lye calculator with each of the Quick Mix oil blends on
any of the Quick Mix product pages or you can do the math yourself.
Example:
If you have 100 ounces of Swirl Soap Quick Mix, you would figure out your lye by
multiplying the amount of oils you wanted to use by the SAP value of Swirl (.14613).
100 oz. x .14613 = 14.6 oz. of lye for a 0% superfat
Water = roughly double the amount of your lye (14.6 x 2 = 29.2)
To get your superfat, simply discount 5% off the lye amount. Here is how it’s done.
Find 5% of Lye: 14.6 x .05 = 0.73 Find new Lye amount: 14.6 – 0.73 = 13.88 for a 5%
superfat (also referred to as a 5% lye discount)
