This list will be updated as new resources are recommended and older ones are no longer available. A list of core learning resources can be found on the Ministry of Education website. (CAN) indicates that a Canadian contributed to the development of the resource and/or that it includes Canadian content. (SK) indicates that a Saskatchewan person contributed to the development of the resource and/or that it includes Saskatchewan content. (FNMI) indicates that a First Nations, Métis, or Inuit person contributed to the development of the resource and/or that it includes First Nations, Métis, or Inuit content. Resources evaluated and recommended as support for the Western and Northern Canadian Protocol curriculum frameworks and Saskatchewan’s provincial curricula have the designation (WNCP) before the annotation. Other resources beyond those recommended in this list may effectively support the curriculum, Mathematics 2. It remains the responsibility of educators to preview and select materials that best meet the needs of their school or community. Educators should choose resources in accordance with their school division’s learning resources selection policy. Pricing of the learning resources in this document is subject to change without notice. Manipulatives are an essential component of an effective mathematics program, leading to the development of deeper understanding of mathematical concepts. Included are charts outlining the types of manipulatives needed, and the suggested quantity recommended (where appropriate). Some manipulatives may be collected; others may be constructed; and many may be purchased. The main distributors for these materials are Exclusive Educational Products at www.exclusiveeducational.ca and Spectrum Nasco Educational Supplies Ltd. at https:// education.spectrum-nasco.ca/. Please consult these companies’ catalogues for purchasing information. The Ministry of Education expresses its appreciation to publishers, producers, and distributors who have provided learning resources for evaluation, and gratefully acknowledges the contributions made by educators who served as evaluators. They learn different strategies to figure out how many fire-proof tiles are needed for the launch pad. TBA Computers Binary Bill sends a brand new computer to the castle. The Monsters plug it in only to discover that Binary Bill has set certain challenges before they can log in. V627 Counting and Symbolizing The Monsters are invited to help Cousin Digit do an inventory of fish at his fish store. Because the fish move around, it is difficult to get an accurate count. A variety of counting strategies help the Monsters understand one-to-one correspondence. V625 Data Collection When the Monsters decide to open a restaurant, they conduct a survey to collect the data they need to create a good menu. They must figure out how to combine their various representations of data to determine the favourite pancakes. V614 Estimation The Math Monsters must pick and box all the gollywomple fruit in Aunt Two Lips orchard. The Monsters must use estimation strategies to help them count the gollywomple fruit. TBA Geometry The Monsters create an accurate model of their town by taking a look at the different shapes V637 and sizes of the buildings. They explore concepts of perspective, encounter a triangular prism, cube, cylinder, and octagonal prism, and discover information about the characteristics of these shapes. Landmark Numbers and Number Line The Monster’s castle is located on a highway between Positivity City and Negativityville. To help run their tow truck buisness, the Monsters develop a strategy to place Monstermeter signs at regular intervals. Students will learn about number line and the usefulness of landmark numbers TBA The Making of Tens The Monsters decide to send gift boxes of fruit to their relatives. They want to send out boxes of 10 to each relative, and decide that no two boxes should contain the same combination of fruit. Addition and subtraction are used to help determine how many fruits of each kind are placed in each box. V617 Mapping The Monsters learn that Binary Bill does not know how to get to the Monsters’ castle from his computer shop. A free form map is drawn and sent to Binary Bill by email. When Binary Bill asks for landmarks, the Monsters label all the streets in their neighbourhood. V621 (continued) Mathematics 2 21 Math Monsters Series (continued) Title K 1 2 3 √ √ √ √ 4 5 6 7 8 Annotation Mental Math: The Monsters’ plan to perform in a circus provides a context for exploring doubles and their Doubles and Their neighbours. Neighbors 9 10 11 12 ID Number V618 Number Conservation, Transformation & Equivalency The Monsters decide to plant two gardens, each with the identical number of monster V616 melon plants. Aunt Tulip delivers two piles, each containing the same number of seeds. One pile, however, is stacked high while the other is spread out. This provides an opportunity to explore number conservation and one-to-one correspondence. Patterns The Monsters learn how to recognize, describe, extend, and create patterns. One Monster starts and asks the next to continue – but what exactly makes a pattern, and how can it be extended? Other Monsters decorate their rooms with flip patterns, number patterns, and growth patterns. V622 Standard and Non-Standard Measurement To build an addition to their castle, the Monsters must inform the carpenters how big they want the new room to be. The Monsters progress from describing a room that is sort of long, to pacing it out, and figuring out the number of steps. V615 Time The Monsters have only one kite to fly. In order to be fair, they need to take turns, and must decide how long each turn will last. They learn how to break up the time into shorter and quantifiable amounts. Mooove Over!: A Book about Counting by Twos Author: Beil, Karen Magnuson Illustrator: Meisel, Paul Annotation The Countingtown trolley and its driver are always on time. As each pair of animal passengers board the bus, the driver keeps a running total: two, four, six, eight …. Everything proceeds smoothly until a pushy cow steps on board and tells the rest of the passengers to “Mooove over!” all the way out the door. The driver soon sets things right and does a final headcount – twenty, “Plus one pushy cow makes one too many!” Readers practise counting by twos, and gain familiarity with related words such as duet, pair, couple, twosome, and partners. Additional activities for counting by twos are included at the end of the book. In his honour, the people from the neighbourhood gather for a carnival and picnic in the schoolyard. One of the booths is a dunk tank, and Eddie, a student, sits in the “hot seat”. Blindfolded, his challenge is to guess the age of each contestant in three tries or less. Using his ability to compare numbers, Eddie remains dry for a long time. But when Mr. Shaw’s turn comes, Eddie goes for a dunk. At the end of the book, suggestions for additional activities help adults and children explore number comparison further.
