Congratulations to all of those mentioned below: Sporting Achievements 2015–16 Cycling: As well as collecting medals, Uddingston Grammar pupils have been achieving coaching awards. Kyle Cheeseman & Chenji Zhou (both S4) spent the October week holiday at a Scottish Cycling Camp on the beautiful Glenfeshie estate in the Highlands. As well as developing their mountain biking skills the boys gained a Velotech qualification in bike maintenance and a basic First Aid certificate. On their return, along with Jade Moore, Amy Mitchell, Amy McGhee, Megan McSherry, Leanne Grant, Jack Curran, Robbie Platt, Kyle McParland (all S5) they passed the demanding Cycle Trainer Assistant award which qualifies them to assist with Bikeability training in Primary schools. Well done! Dance: Eva McCluskey, Laura McCartney, Kelly McCutcheon, Taylor Muir (all S3) and Georgia Lambie (S4) passed their Dance leadership qualification. Sophie Henderson (S1) was part of the team who came 1st at the European Street Dance Championships in Prague in April. Becky McGraw (S1) was part of a group who came 7th in the World Street Dance Championships, in their category. Leanne Grant (S5) was part of a group who were awarded 6th in the World Street Dance Championships, and 4th in the Scottish. She was also placed 1st in the Regional Championships with her solo dance. Rachel Oliver (S1) finished 4th with her solo at the Extravadance competition. Football: Our Girls’ football team finished runners up in the South Lanarkshire league. Shelley Campbell (S4) is currently playing with Rangers U/17’s and & Lauren Simpson (also S4) is with Motherwell FC’s U/17’s. Ross Taylor (S1) is with St Mirren and Lewis Budinauckas (S2) will move up to Rangers U/15’s. Eddie McGhee (S3) played for Lanarkshire Schools’ U/15’s who won the Scottish Cup with a 4-1 victory over Paisley & District Schools. Fraser Dawson (S3) won the Cumbernauld & Kilsyth U/15’s league, the Janice Morton Memorial Cup, the Central Region Cup and the Knock-Out Cup with Rossfield Madrid. Robbie McLay (S3) won the ‘Goal of the Season’ award for the Cumbernauld & Kilsyth U/15’s ‘B’ league playing with Motherwell Community Boys Club. In Gymnastics: In July, Collette Whyte (S4), Amy Livingston & Jade Moore (S5) represented GB at the World Gymnestrada in Finland. Collette was also 4th at the Scottish Invitational, 5th at the Acrobay Invitational, 3rd in the Scottish Championships, 4th in Kent NDGA Acro Cup 2016 and 2md at the Scottish Tournament. Jade added 4 gold, 1 silver & 1 bronze medal to her collection at competitions in England & North of the border beating teams from GB, Ireland & the United States at the International Aerobic Tournament at Stoke-on-Trent in November. Collette came first in the Lanark Invitational and, at the end of January, secured 3rd at the Scottish Championships. Chloe Miller (S1) picked up bronze at a recent competition representing Hamilton Gymnastics Club. Hockey: Barry Platt (S4) was an integral part of the Uddingston team who successfully retained their position in Scotland’s top league. This was an incredible year for Uddingston Hockey Club who won European Club of the Year from the EHF. Barry also played in the Indoor team which finished 3rd in the country. Although eligible for Scotland Under 16’s he is playing for the U/18’s. Over the next few days, Barry should find out if he has been selected for Scotland U/18’s team for the European Championships and the International match against Spain. Hockey is really taking off in the school and a number of our youngsters are playing for Uddingston Hockey Club in the National & West District leagues. Lewis Haxton (S6) is with the 2nd’s, Jack Curran (S5) Vice Captain of the 3rd’s, Graeme Haxton (S3) won Player of the Year with the 4th’s, Andrew Moore (S3) won the Caitlin McCart Special Achievement Award and along with Bein Wilson (S4) all 3 look like being promoted to the 2nd’s. Jamie Wilson and Joe Russell (both S2), have been selected for West District U/14’s. Ross Pugh (S3) also plays for the 4th’s, was selected for West District U/14’s and U/16’s and will be attending Scotland trials in September. The school is also well represented in the women’s teams with Kirsty Wratten (S5) playing for the 1st’s, Heather Wratten & Rona Lambie (both S3) for the 2nd XI. Ice Hockey: Brother & sister, Ian & Emma Watson (S1 & S5 respectively) are both competing for Lanarkshire Lightening. Both have also been selected to represent Scotland. Ice Skating: Abigail Stewart (S1) trains 2 days a week before school, rising at 4:30am to travel to Murrayfield and rises at 5:30am at weekends to get ice time at Braehead & Ayr. Her hard work is paying off as Abigail secured 3rd place at her first International event in September, in London, before going on to finish12th out of 38 at the British Championships in December. Karate: Rhys Hartley (S1) secured an individual silver medal in the Scottish Championships in the 10 – 11 years category and matched this with another silver in the British Team Championships for the 1213 years group. Zoe Martin (S3) has recently achieved her brown belt. Kayaking: Matthew Fisher (S1) is current U/14 champion at Glasgow Kayak Club. Rowing: In November we had a visit from the Talent Identification Unit of GB Rowing. Eight boys were put through a physically demanding battery of tests and Michael Cole (S6) was offered the opportunity to be part of the GB Development squad. Daniel McQuaid (S5) is currently competing for Strathclyde Rowing Club and finished in 4th & 5th place in his events at the Scottish Championships. Rugby: Aidan Trim & Zak Simpson (both S1) have been selected for Glasgow Hawks U/13’s. Callum Trim (S4) is playing with Hamilton Bulls and has been selected for Glasgow Pathway trials. Shinty: Mr Thompson introduced us to Shinty this year and he already has 18 boys and 12 girls playing matches – and is threatening a tour to Ireland next year! Cameron Curle (S2) finished top scorer with 7 goals in 7 matches. A number of the players are in contention for places in the Central Development Squad who will be seen live on television at the McAuley Cup final in September! Lewis won the S1 / Shinty Inter House competition. Show Jumping & Dressage: Caitlin Grant (S3) was a member of the winning team at the Blue Ridge Show Jumping Competition. Louise Murphy (S1) picked up 1st & 3rd in the Novice class at Roundknowe. Alex Ross specializes in Dressage and was placed 1st at Blue Ridge, 1st & 3rd at Muirmill and 2nd & 5th at the Scottish National Equestrian Centre. Swimming: Ross Burns (S6) won 2 gold medals in the 100m & 200m breast stroke, added silver in the 200 IM at the South Lanarkshire Schools Championships. Ross finished just outside the medals at the Scottish Schools’ before going on to compete in the Scottish Short Course Open meet where he swam against Olympic & Commonwealth medalist Ross Murdoch. Ross and Ellie Forsyth (S2) were members of the South Lanarkshire Swim Team who won the overall trophy for the best team at the Scottish National Age Group Championships in April. Heather Smyth (S5) picked up silver in the 100m Butterfly, bronze in each of the 100m Free Style and the 200m Breaststroke at the South Lanarkshire Schools Championships. This year we entered 2 teams into the Scottish Schools’ Aquathlon Relay which involves teams of 4 competitors each swimming 200m and running 1km. Ellie Forsyth (S2), Ryan Kirkpatrick (S2), Heather Smyth (S5) & Ross Burns (S6) came 7th and Evan Gray, Millie Boyd (both S1), Cameron Bisland & David Kostelansky (both S2) finished 10th. Last week we were represented at the Brodie’s Schools National Relay Championships at the Royal Commonwealth Pool, Edinburgh by Claire Shanks, Evan Gray, Millie Boyd & Jenni Neil finishing 4th in each of their heats. Taekwon Do: We have two boys in 2nd year who are Black Belts - Aiden Carlin & Alexander Milligan. Although only in 2nd year, Alexander won bronze in Sparring at the Scottish championships in the U/16 category and Aiden is currently preparing for the World Championships. Mya Munro (S3) won bronze competing at a tournament in Wales. Tennis: Christie McAllister (S4) holds the U/18’s singles title at Uddingston Tennis Club. Shona Burt (S4) is one half of the current Mixed Doubles Champions at the club. Christie & Shona also represent the club in the West District u/18’s League. Arran Thomson (S4) is also playing for the Gents 2nd team. Inter House Cross Country Championships: S1 Boys: Tom Downey S2 Boys: Jamie Wilson S3 Boys: Jake Bennett S1 Girls: Jorja Philip S2 Girls: Ellie Forsyth S3 Girls: Kelly McCutcheon The Inter House Cross Country Shield is awarded to SKYE House South Lanarkshire Cross Country Championships: Heather Smyth, Amy Johnston, Carla McVay (all S5) and Emma Hunter (S6) won silver in the Senior Girls event. S1 boys won bronze. Emma Hunter (S6) also won bronze in the Senior Girls; Emma also came a creditable 20th at the Scottish Championships at Irvine, in March. South Lanarkshire Schools Athletics Championships: 6 x Gold: Kara Thompson (S1 Shot), Camila Palomares Osorio (S1 Javelin), Heather Wratten (S2 Javelin), Callum Downie (S3 Long Jump), James Crossan (S3 Discus) & Emma Hunter (S6 1500m) 4 x Silver: Zak Simpson (S1 Shot); Dean Quinn (S2 Discus); Greg Stewart (S3 800m); Jake Barnett (S3 1500m); 4 x Bronze: Callum Downie (S3 100m); Ellie Reston (S3 100m); Olivia Muir (S3 Discus), Robbie McLay (S3 High Jump) Scottish Schools Athletics Championships: Kara Thompson (S1) won silver in her age group for Hammer and finished 6th in the Discus. Young Ambassadors: Silver Award: Jade Moore & Luke McKibbin (both S5) Greg Walker represented us at the South Lanarkshire Active Schools Leadership Academy. South Lanarkshire Sports Coach Academy: Emma Hunter, Katie Culton, Rachel Millar, Chelsea Chatham & Emma Twaddle (all S6) Youth Football Level 1 Coaching qualification: Logan Jackson & Scott Mearns (S6) Competition Organiser Conference: Ryan Cunningham & Scott Dearie (both S3) were selected to attend this Leadership Conference at Strathclyde University in March – and we’re looking forward to the boys’ help with next year’s programme of extra-curricular activity! Boys’ Brigade Queen’s Badge: The following pupils achieved the Queen’s Badge which is the highest award available in the Boys’ Brigade Bruce Dunlop Anthony Burns Andrew Watson Jack Curran Jon Pollock Jamie Gribbons Robbie Platt For this award they had to take up a leadership role within their company, complete a minimum of 30 hours community service, learn a new skill and attend two residential weekend courses at Carronvale the Scottish HQ. All these boys have given 11/12 years service to the Boys Brigade.
