2012 Annual Report 30th Anniversary Celebration 30 Years of Life Saving Programs and Services For the past 30 years, the Animal Shelter of the Wood River Valley has provided humane care and second chances for homeless animals. A commitment to the inherent value of all animals drives our quality and innovative sheltering practices and led to us become the first no-kill shelter in the State of Idaho. Promoting and celebrating the human-animal bond has been central to the development of our outreach services and educational programs for both the pets and people of our community. As a dynamic and evolving organization, we recognize the power of the Animal Shelter as an agent of change for animal welfare both in our community and in those around us. We are so much more than just a local shelter; the effectiveness of our programs serves as a model for others and has impact beyond the borders of our small County. Moving forward, we are reaching out to other communities and underserved populations, teaching and supporting them so they too can make real and significant changes in the lives of the animals and people around them. We sincerely thank everyone who has partnered in our mission and helped us reach this 30-year milestone. While much has been achieved, there is still more work to be done. We count on your continued support and look forward to working with you to teach compassion and enrich lives by connecting animals and people. Thank you for being part of the journey. We hope you enjoy reading about the Shelter’s 30 years of service to our community. Sincerely, Jo-Anne Dixon DVM Executive Director/ Medical Director 2 The journey began in 1972 as The Animal Hospice, a pet placement network. In 1972, a small group of passionate Wood River Valley animal lovers founded the Animal Hospice. This pet placement network fostered lost or abandoned pets, and cared for their many needs while searching for their forever homes. For 10 years they functioned out of their own homes while securing the resources needed to build an actual shelter. Thanks to many fundraisers, private donations, volunteer labor and the 5 acres of land donated by the Burt family, honoring their son Bobby, the Animal Shelter opened its doors in May of 1982. That same year we began a partnership with the Idaho Mountain Express and introduced the Pet of the Week column; it has been running for 30 years! The Barkin’ Basement began supporting Shelter operations in early 1994. The Pole Barn Kennel was constructed in the early 90’s to provide shelter for the dogs during the daytime. In 2000, the Pole Barn was enclosed to provide crucial additional sleeping capacity for our dogs. 1997 saw the beginning of our Humane Education Program which welcomes school children to tour the Shelter and learn about responsible pet ownership. The Barkin’ Basement, our thrift store on Main Street in downtown Hailey, opened its doors in April of 1994. In 2002 we began to expand our outreach with the Hikin’ Buddies program. The Pet Acquaintance Center was completed in 2002 to provide visitors a safe and quiet place to meet and greet our canine residents. The Sun Valley Labs outdoor kennels were constructed that summer, providing much needed additional daytime outdoor kennels. Our Hikin’ Buddies program began in 2002 and remains one of our most popular programs. In 2004, we hired our first Licensed Veterinary Technician and in 2006, a Veterinarian was hired to serve as our Executive Director/ Medical Director. The construction of a medical suite and the hiring of medical professionals made it possible for the Shelter to begin offering weekly free spay/ neuter clinics to the community in 2006. Thanks to the donation of 5 acres of land and 10 long years of fundraising, the Shelter opened its doors in 1982 . at Blaine County Medical Center. This program continues today as Paws on Location: Blaine Manor. The Pet Therapy program began in 1983 in partnership with the extended care facility A separate crematory building was constructed in 1983, the first of many out buildings and structures to be added to the facility’s campus, each helping expand our programs and services to the community. In 1985 our name was officially changed to the Animal Shelter of the Wood River Valley. 2013 Mission/ Vision/ Values Statements Our first cat room, the Sun Room, was constructed in 1985. Since that time, four additional cat rooms have been built into the Shelter, so that all healthy and adoptable cats can enjoy a cage free environment and the company of other felines. MISSION In May of 1999, we became the first no-kill shelter in Idaho and began our goal of becoming a model shelter. In May of 1999, the Shelter’s Board of Directors made the bold move to become the first animal shelter in the state of Idaho to operate as a no-kill facility, and that decision launched the Shelter onto a new path. Model shelter programs and services were developed and implemented to enable us to meet the challenge of finding homes for every adoptable animal that arrives at our Shelter. The Mocha Myerson Shelters , constructed in the summer of 2000, provide daily shade and shelter to the dogs. Later that year, work began to build our Medical Suite, Isolation Room and a separate Impound Boarding Room. The “Dog Days of Summer” fundraisers The Animal Shelter of the Wood River Valley Giving Circle THE MARMADUKE SOCIETY We are on a mission to enrich the quality of life in our community by connecting animals and people through innovative programs that inspire and have impact beyond our borders. VISION We envision a compassionate community where all animals are recognized for their inherent value and the human-animal bond is celebrated. began in the summer of 2000 and the Marmaduke Society, our virtual pet adoption program was launched. VALUES Compassion for all animals In 2006, we began our free spay/ neuter clinics. Since then, we have altered almost 2500 animals in the clinics. The Agility Center was created in 2008. The original equipment was donated and refurbished by young volunteers. This area is used by both our staff and volunteers to train and exercise the dogs at the Shelter. We started the Paws For Hunger Program in partnership with the Hunger Coalition in 2009. Since that time almost 30,000 lbs. of pet food have been distributed to families needing help to feed their pets. In early 2010, we had found new homes for 10,000 animals since opening the Shelter. By the end of 2012, we had surpassed the 11,000 milestone. 2010 also saw the creation of our Animal Advocates program, a partnership with the Advocates organization. In 2011, we began to offer Reward Based Training and Obedience Classes to the public. We have been selling dog licenses and serving as Blaine County’s only Animal Impound Facility for more than 30 years. Belief that every animal has intrinsic value and the right to be free from cruelty, neglect, and abuse Commitment to ending pet overpopulation Appreciation of our qualified and committed staff and volunteers Thank you for being part of the journey! 3 Teaching Compassion It is our fundamental belief that animals make us better people. Compassion is the greatest gift we can give or receive, and animals are uniquely positioned to teach us this lesson. Each day the homeless animals at the Shelter depend on us for their care; in return, they give us unconditional love and teach us the importance of the human-animal bond. Compassion is what we do. From committing to no-kill sheltering practices in 1999, to bringing the joy of spending time with animals to others, to educating children about animals, we are demonstrating compassion each day. Through Paws on Location: Blaine Manor, we enrich the lives of elderly and disabled nursing home residents with weekly Shelter animal visits. Spending time petting a Shelter dog can bring valuable emotional and physical support to the elderly and we often hear how much the residents look forward to our visits. Our Hikin’ Buddies program and Town Walks bring Shelter dogs into the community, giving both residents and visitors the opportunity to walk and interact with them. It is a common occurrence that someone who was not thinking of getting a pet discovers a new love that they just can’t live without through these programs. School children and community members learn about responsible pet ownership and the importance of spay/neuter practices in preventing pet overpopulation through our Humane Education program. Last year, hundreds of school children visited the Shelter through this program, and many chose to give back by volunteering their time to work on Shelter projects and enrich the lives of our residents. We believe their interactions with the Shelter and our animals will help them grow up to be more compassionate citizens of our world. 4 “Thank you for letting us visit the Animal Shelter. It was one of the best field trips we ever had. Dogs are my favorite animals and because of you I know how to take care of them. We learned dogs need: 1. water 2. dog food 3. shelter 4. exercise 5. love. We all need that stuff, don’t we? Well maybe not the dog food. Thanks.” Riley & George 5 “I had such a wonderful experience at your shelter when I adopted my dog “Hailey” that when I came home to California I decided I would volunteer at my local animal shelter. I can’t thank you all enough for awakening me to all these animals and their needs. I am amazed at all the wonderful work that animal shelters do for animals. Your enabling me to adopt Hailey has made me a much better person.” 6 Harry Stevens, Owner of “Hailey”, a dog adopted from our Shelter in 2011 Connecting Animals and People Each day we see firsthand how our work stretches far beyond our walls and strengthens our community. The rewards of our work are seen in the joyful reunion of a lost pet with its owner, the second chance realized in the excitement of a new adoption, and when space allows, the life-saving possibility created with every animal we take from an over-crowded shelter in a neighboring community. Old, young, healthy or sick, our Shelter staff and dedicated volunteers devote time daily to ensure each adoptable animal receives the help they need to find a permanent home. The strong behavior and enrichment support we give each animal provides the quality of life and quality of care they need and deserve. Volunteers in our foster care and Pet Pal mentoring programs are a crucial support system to the Shelter, providing life-saving care and attention for many at-risk animals. Additionally, when we have extra space in our Shelter, our community outreach program helps by taking in additional animals from other shelters that may be faced with euthanizing adoptable animals because of space constraints. We are the lost and found network for the animals in our community, providing a safe place for stray animals until their families can be located. If they are not reclaimed, we are committed to adopting each of our animals into a forever home. Our trained staff performs in-depth adoption counseling with each adopter to ensure a perfect match, and our in-house animal trainers provide adoption follow up and public training classes to help support each adoption. The Animal Shelter of the Wood River Valley has adopted out over 11,000 animals into loving homes since it opened its doors in 1982! 7 Enriching Lives Each of us has the power to improve the lives of others, and by doing so, improve our own lives. For us, one of the greatest joys of working with the Shelter is seeing how lives in our community are enriched by giving. Shelter volunteers, staff and supporters give of their time, talents, and resources to help the animals at the Shelter and in our community. In return, the animals give joy and unconditional love. We are able to share these gifts throughout Blaine County, including with at-risk and underserved populations. Through our Animal Advocates program, in partnership with the Advocates for Survivors of Domestic Violence, we provide free medical care and housing to the pets of Advocates’ clients. This valuable assistance helps struggling families keep their beloved animals while they rebuild their lives. Our pet food bank, Paws for Hunger, in partnership with The Hunger Coalition, helps families in economic crisis continue to be able to feed their pets. Last year, over 10,000 pounds of pet food was given out to families in need, keeping pets where they belong: with their families instead of having to be surrendered to Shelter. Along with programs like Paws for Hunger, our No-Cost Community Spay/Neuter program is what has allowed us to remain a no-kill facility for the last 13 years. Our dedication to the prevention of pet overpopulation through the spay/neuter of animals already in homes has played a key role in preventing unwanted litters that would otherwise fill up the Shelter. This creates the space to allow us to give all our residents the time they need to get adopted, never having to put a deadline on a perfectly adoptable pet. There are great rewards in giving back. 8 “The Paws for Hunger program has brought so many new people to us, who would not have had the courage to take the step to get help for themselves if it were not for the pet food program. For some reason, many people find it easier to ask for help for their pets, but not themselves. THANKS!” Naomi Spence, Program Manager of the Hunger Coalition 9 2012 Shelter Achievements In 2012, the Shelter celebrated its 30th year of operations and was voted the Valley’s best Non-Profit organization for the second year in a row. 2012 in Numbers Grants Awarded in 2012 365 days we cared for animals Supporting Pittbull Home Placements Animal Farm Foundation 1500+ animals received Shelter services 386 adoptions 380 animals altered in our community no-cost spay/neuter clinics 188 Shelter animals spayed/neutered 281 microchip identifications placed 393 rabies vaccinations given 113 cats tested for feline leukemia and FIV 14,198 volunteer hours logged 10,000 + lbs. of pet food distributed through our “Paws for Hunger”pet food bank program 233 lost pets reunited with their owner 50 animals at the Shelter each day on average 628 impounded/surrendered animals 10 Supporting No-Cost Commmunity Spay/Neuter Program Deer Creek Fund of the Helen K. and Arthur E. Contact Brooke Bonner, Director of Development and Communications: (208) 788-4351 or [email protected] Volunteer Recognition Volunteers do an incredible amount of work for the Shelter and the animals we care for. In 2012, caring individuals in our community gave over 14,000 hours of their time volunteering for a variety of duties from walking dogs and petting cats to working at events and helping at the Barkin’ Basement. Their hard work is the equivalent of almost 7 full-time staff positions! Without their dedication, the Animal Shelter would not be able to provide so many terrific programs and services to our community. Thank you to everyone who gave their time to help improve the quality of life for Shelter animals! If you are interested in volunteering, please contact the Shelter office or visit our website for a list of volunteer opportunities. Special thanks to the amazing people who spent at least 250 hours volunteering for us in 2012: Sandy Berk Joy Bond Greg Boylston Kathy Boylston Bridget Cimino Dale Closner Linda Closner Janie Davidson Jane Dettwiler Dave Faltings Renee Faltings Phil Gilbert Jodi Herlich Mary Letourneau Sheila Liermann Jeffrey Loosli Marcelita Loosli Jan Lowen Jan Main Isabelle Moore Andrea Nelson Pamela Wertalik 19 Animal Shelter of the Wood River Valley P.O.
