Pastor’s Letter
Dear Parishioners and Visitors of Our Lady of Guadalupe Parish Shrine,
This weekend we celebrate Passion Sunday or more commonly called Palm
Sunday. It is the beginning of HOLY WEEK. As we journey into this week, let us
immerse ourselves in the Passion, Suffering and Death of our beloved Savior, Jesus the
Christ. The Lord’s Passion is nothing less than a sign of His love. He ransoms us from sin
by His actions. “No greater love is there than to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.” (Jn 15:13) Think
about how much we would need to love someone before we would give our very lives so that the other could
be saved? Truly, this would need to be a radical love and one whom we love more than our own lives. This
describes the type of love God has for all of us.
As the Passion unfolds this week beginning today, Jesus calls us into a very intense time of renewal.
Ultimately, Easter Sunday will be the culmination of this triumphant renewal of life for all of us. So, as we
begin this most Holy Week, let us do so with great devotion and care. I ask you to stop several times
throughout this week to meditate on what is happening with each passing day of this week. This week is
almost like a retreat for us. That is, a sacred time asking us to step back in thought, prayer and meditation in
order to reflect very deeply on what is happening and how it is affecting our lives.
The Triduum, the three holiest days of our Church’s liturgical and spiritual life provide us this
opportunity to do so. These days consist of Holy Thursday, Good Friday and Easter.
HOLY THURSDAY: Jesus invites us to a supper where heaven meets earth, a divine meal. He will
take bread and wine which sustains our spiritual journey while on earth and makes them His very Body
and Blood to sustain us for eternity. At this same meal, He impresses upon our hearts the call to service in His name and the transformative power this service has both for those who give it and those
who receive it. How can we all “lay down our lives” for one another in service?
GOOD FRIDAY: Jesus pays the ultimate price for our freedom. He will endure suffering and death
so that we have hope that in His death is our everlasting life. Remember, today we will hear the words
of Jesus spoken to us-if we remain faithful to Him-“Today you will be with me in paradise.”
(Lk 23:43) Wow, what a promise! Do we live as those worthy of such a promise?
EASTER: Jesus will open up glory for us and show us His triumph over all that represents sin and
death to us through His resurrection from the dead. What forms of death and sin might we need to triumph over at this time in our lives? Do we believe that He has really done this for us?
I offer these questions for your meditation and reflection as you begin this Holy Week retreat. Ponder
them, meditate upon them. Bring them to prayer, discuss them with someone who shares the Christian faith
with you. Most of all, live their reality in your life so that your life may be a true reflection of Him for all
others to see. Our lives are walking, talking, breathing and living Holy Weeks. We embody these days in our
lives and live their reality as we strive to become what we encounter and become what we celebrate. We all
have Holy Thursdays, Good Fridays and eventually, Easter Sundays in our lives.
Please try to join us for the Triduum liturgies throughout this week so that you may gain all that they
offer. May God bless each of you, especially if you are among us for the first time. We welcome you and
hope that you will journey with us as a Body of Christ, a community of faith.
Fr. Joe

you remain quiet not to cause a disturbance or worst yet, because
you don’t want your friends or family to think negatively about

into a respectful dialogue.

What is a care receiver?
A care receiver is a hurting person who receives care from a
Stephen Minister.
Can Stephen Ministers care for people outside the parish?
Yes. Stephen Ministers often provide care for people in the
broader community-relatives, friends and co-workers of parish
members, nonmembers whom the parish serve, for example,
St. Vincent DePaul Society, as well as military personnel and
their families. This is a powerful way that Stephen Ministry
can enhance and expand a parish outreach. Stephen Ministers
serve people of all religious denominations.
“Cast your cares on the Lord and he will sustain you.”
