Message from our Principal,
Ms S Penn
Dear Parents & Students
We are now in the middle of the busiest time for Year 11 revision
and exams. We wish them all the best and ask them to
remember we are still here for them to offer support when they
need it.
Our theme for this newsletter is getting involved, and we are
sharing the things we have been doing and plan to do during the
rest of the term. We have plans for more extracurricular activities
and hope to put on some more school trips next year. If there are
any activities that you feel that you would like us to be able to
offer, please contact us at [email protected]
I am sure everyone is looking forward to a lovely, warm Whitsun
half term holiday!

Student Voice
Our main focus over the next few weeks is to get ready for the Summer fair. We have been
discussing each Form group’s stall and we have some real treats being planned! More will be
revealed in the next newsletter.
We are also developing the way students are involved in the running of the school from teaching
and learning through to community projects and we will be launching Endeavour Ambassadors..
After half term, students will be able to apply for a role as an Endeavour Ambassador, so watch this
space!
Students at Endeavour, this is your school so have your say and get involved!
Mrs Baker
Civic Engagement project
Earlier in the term some Westbourne students visited us to continue the Civic Engagement project. We spent
the morning on a variety of activities. The bulk of the time was spent in small groups researching local
campaigns where people within our community have been successful in raising awareness and often
changing the lives of others : 20’s Plenty, Save our Stroke, Have a Heart, Reducing the Strength campaign,
and where people have campaigned for speed bumps so that it is safer for children to play. We discussed the
strategies used and whether they had been successful.
One of the projects we focused on was thinking about the following areas within the locality of our schools:
environment, equality, economy (i.e. job opportunities), housing, culture and our ability to work together,
the management of the local community, transport, services like hospitals and schools. We debated how
these areas could be improved for all within community. This has prepared us for the focus of our next
session when the two schools will begin their campaign to improve a local amenity.

Summer Uniform
When we finally have some good summer weather to celebrate from
now until the end of this academic year, all students have
permission to wear short-sleeved shirts (or blouses). They may also
remove their blazers outside school buildings, for the journey home
and in lessons when the teacher has given permission. Blazers
must still be worn around the academy at all other times.
Amy Wragg
We have also issued new blazer badges this term for every student,
denoting which House they belong to - these bespoke items have
been designed by one of our students so we are very proud to have
them.
Many thanks for your continued support of Endeavour.
GCSE Art Exam
A huge well done to everyone in year 11 GCSE Art for producing such amazing pieces of
art work for the exam. In this Newsletter there is a small selection of the work. You will be
able to view all of the art work at our art exhibition on June 20th from 3.30 - 6pm.

The Endenet comes to Endeavour
The summer term sees a very exciting addition to Endeavour Academy in the form of our very own virtual learning
environment called the Endenet.
The Endenet will ensure that all students have access to secure email, calendar, cloud file storage and other useful apps,
all provided by the search giant Google. Not only will this mean that your children are able to learn and communicate
electronically more easily but their information will be backed up by powerful, secure Google servers.
The Endenet was built by Mr. Mark Thompson, Director of Digital Media, who has been seconded from another
Ormiston Academy. Mark tells us that “Using Google Apps for Education as the platform for our Endenet really is very
exciting. Students can work together across the internet and share their coursework with teachers from anywhere in the
world. The scope to expand horizons here is huge.”
The name Endenet is derived from the name ‘Endeavour’ and the word ‘network’ to really give a sense that the
technology is aiming to foster a useful learning and teaching tool for both staff and students.
As well as being great for learning, the Endenet can be used to showcase students’ work, celebrate achievements and
share news with students. The Endenet is only available to members of the Academy and an Endeavour email is required
for access. This helps to ensure that our students are safeguarded when using the site.
Having already been used to replace a paper-based survey to gauge the opinions of students, the Endenet has shown
itself to be a fast and efficient way to share and collate resources across the whole Academy. Over the course of the
Summer and Autumn terms more and more content will be added to the site specific to the needs of groups of students.
With the Endenet comes Google Drive. Google Drive provides students with free word processing, spreadsheet and
slideshow software which means that it is no longer necessary to invest in software such as MS Word, Excel and
Powerpoint for home use. Google Drive files can be downloaded, shared or emailed in a variety of common formats
making completing coursework at home more accessible.
Students can access the Endenet with any web browser at http://www.endenet.co.uk and signing in with their email and
password.

ENDEAVOUR NEWS
In the last newsletter we reported on the achievements of Year 8
Humanities Students (Hannah Sloane,Hannah Spalding, Jomoya
Smithen, Callum Vinyard, Keelan Draper & Sam Kidby) who had
recieved a reply from Daniel Poulter (MP) for their recommendations
they put forward about changes to the census. They also wrote to the
Office for National Statistics and received a great response:
Dear Hannah, Hannah, Jomaya, Callum, Keelan and Sam
I am writing to thank you very much for the letter you sent to the Office
for National Statistics on 28th March proposing ideas about the next
census in 2021.
I'm sorry it has taken me a little time to get back to you - I've explained
why below.
I have emailed you now so you can get a response a little faster (and
have also put a copy of this mail in the post).
I am writing from 'Beyond 2011' - the part of ONS that is looking at
what happens for the next census.
The truth is we are thinking hard about whether there does need to be
another census.
There may be other ways in which we can count the population more
easily and cheaply and we are looking at all of the possibilities.
We were very impressed by the fact that you have been looking at this
topic and had done this work.
The ideas and the issues you spotted were really excellent and were
very nicely presented.
You provided some ideas of how the census might be carried out - and
got these exactly right.
As far as possible we are moving to gathering information via the
internet as this allows us to collect information more quickly, more
cheaply and with fewer errors.
You spotted this and described it perfectly in your letter.
The only thing you mention that we probably would not plan to use
would be the fax machine.
Year 2021 is quite a long way in the future and fax machines may be
even more rare by then.
We are actually looking at whether we would use tablets or smartphones to help capture information when we interview people on the
doorstep.
You outlined correctly all of the main reasons why the census is carried
out and your section on questions was really good.
A couple of the questions you included are not normally asked in the
census. Although there are lots of reasons why it would be useful to
society to ask questions about income many people are not happy to
answer this type of question so we have not included it in the past. We
don't ask about phone numbers either because these change a lot but perhaps in the future we will include these questions. Everything
we collect in the census is traditionally kept completely confidential for
100 years.
I also really liked your use of a spider diagram to outline the ways in
which the census is useful to society.
Overall the whole piece of work was very nicely organised and clearly
presented.
The reason it has taken a few weeks for me to write to you is because I
used your letter as an introduction to a conference we ran for
academics at Southampton University last week.
I used your list of methods for collection, questions and uses to talk
through the various ideas we have.
I wanted to wait to be able to send you a photo of your
ideas on the big screen so here is your letter ......
and spider diagram.....
ENDEAVO
UR NEWS
I used several of your lists in my introduction because they
were a nice way to summarise where the problems lie and
I was asking the conference to help us fill in some of the
more complicated gaps.
Thanks again to you and your teacher for your interest and
for sending your ideas
- we enjoyed reading them and this really was a very good
piece of work of which you should all be proud.
Kind regards
Alistair Calder

Mathematics
Year 11 are now getting very close to their final
attempt at their GCSE Mathematics examination.
They have produced some fantastic work during
the year and 98% of them already have a GCSE
grade with 58% having a grade at C or above. It is
now the final push - can they rise to the challenge
and beat last year’s 63% - we have every
confidence in them.
We also have 60 students going for a Statistics
GCSE on top of their Mathematics and we know
many of them will achieve excellent grades.
Now step up Year 10 - it is your turn as well in a
couple of weeks’ time. Can you beat the 43% that
Year 11 got last year?

Exciting News about School Catering
and Online Payments
We are very pleased to let you know that
during the next half term you will be able to make
payments for school meals and other payments such as
school trips via the academy’s website online payment
system. This will provide a simple way to pay for
everything in one place at no extra cost.
The academy will be using a ‘cashless catering’ system
from 1st July which means that your child will be given a
catering account into which payments can be made via
the academy’s website. If you are unable to access the
internet there will be another option for your child to
credit their account at the academy. Further information
will follow by letter including log on details and your
child’s PIN number SO WATCH THIS SPACE…….
