First Grade

Dear Parents,
This year we have learned
many new concepts. The students are very eager learners and
are ready for second grade. We
have created this brochure to
help parents understand what is
expected of students entering
into the second grade. Working
together, we can make sure that
your student has early success in
second grade by identifying the
essential outcomes that need improvement. I have highlighted
the outcomes that your student
needs extra practice with. These
are the essential skills that were
identified by Ms. Hartwig
(Pederson). I have also included
ways to help your child continue
learning through the summer.
Sincerely,
Mrs. Pond

Grandview Elementary
Reading
Reading is the area that students
demonstrate the most growth in first
grade. By the end of first grade, students are expected to read connected
text and comprehend 80% of what they
have read.
Essential outcomes:
Read 60 words per minute
Retell the text in sequence
Use self-correction skills
Decode words using a variety of
strategies
Identify the characters, setting,
and the problem in the story
Read 100 High Frequency Words
Ways to help your student:
Read books daily to your child
Practice reading out-loud using a
storytellers voice
Go to the library to check out
books
Have your students graph how
many words per minute they have
read and set goals
Writing
Writing is a very important part of
communication. It also is difficult for
some individuals. Students enter first
grade writing one complete sentence and
exit writing one complete paragraph or
more. Students are assessed on both expository and narrative pieces, and learn
how to write persuasive and technical
pieces as well.
Essential Outcomes:
Write one complete paragraph consisting of 2-3 sentences, about one
idea
Use capitols, periods, and a variety
of sentence beginnings.
Write high frequency words correctly
Ways to help your student:
Have your student help you compose a grocery list or things you
need to do
Practice Spelling Common Words
Provide a journal or paper for your
student to write creatively
Mathematics
Math is used on a daily basis in
all areas of life. In second grade your
child will use the skills learned in first
grade to grow and solve more
challenging problems.
Students should be able to:
Solve basic addition and
subtraction problems
Know place value to one hundred
Tell time to the 1/4, 1/2 and the
hour
Identify coin value and add up
to $1.00
Skip count by 1, 2, 5, 10’s to 201
Ways to help your student:
Verbally practice skip counting while doing chores or in
the car
Practice adding and
subtracting
Tell time as often as possible
Have your student count
money
Allow your child to have a
pretend store to sell items
and make
change
