Welcome
Thirty years is a considerable length of time
in the life of any charitable organisation. It
represents a milestone which records our
achievements and regonises the challenges
which still lie ahead.
2015 is a very special and exciting year in the history of CASE as we
celebrate our 30th anniversary.
CASE has had an incredible journey, founded in 1985 by a few parents
and carers of children with learning disabilities in a church hall to where
we are today in our new “CASE Centre of Excellence”
From supporting a handful of trainees with a few staff and volunteers to
currently providing services for over 130 trainees.
Our special thanks go to all those who have worked for CASE over the
years and to all the people and agencies who have supported CASE.
The commitment, dedication and determination of everyone has been
instrumental to our success and to making the all important difference
to the lives of our trainees and their families/carers.
We are very proud to celebrate our 30th year anniversary with you,
together we will strive to provide services for another 30 years.

20
The CASE Rebuild grew out of a realisation that its main premises in Hull
City Centre were becoming unsuitable for providing high quality services
for service users. Constructed in 1957 as a furniture showroom, it was
converted in 1987 to its use as a training centre. The new project was to
refurbish and extend the building to create a Centre of Excellence with an
additional of 900m2 of space in an environmentally friendly building. The
visual and physical enhancements provide a more attractive environment for
service users and their families and carers as well as staff, potential funders,
sponsors, partners and contract agencies. Design features were selected on
the basis of:

2012 £1.4m refurbishment of building begins
Timeline
Suitability of the service provision offered to people with learning disabilities
Introduce areas of growth to contribute to future sustainability
Meet a range of needs and abilities of people with learning disabilities to maximise number
of clients accessing and engaging services
Provide training, support employment and work experience opportunities to people with
learning disabilities
When taken as a whole, strengthen the summative provision available to people with
learning disabilities, enhancing efficiency and effectiveness
The project commenced in 2010 with a grant from the Social Investment Business through
the Social Enterprise Investment Fund. This was matched by funding from European
Regional Development Fund (ERDF) and by contributions from various grant funding
organisations as well as support from many other organisations and individuals and CASE
digging deep into its own reserves.
Trainee
Stories
Shaun has a mild learning disability and
struggled to socially interact with others, this
impacted on him significantly making him very
shy, withdrawn and nervous especially around
people or in new situations.
Shaun needed additional support around his
health and looking after his own basic needs as
he would often neglect himself without realising.
He would refuse to engage in social activities
due to the lack a of confidence and self-esteem.
Over the years CASE worked closely with Shaun
providing him with skills and opportunities to
enable him to gain the confidence needed to live
life to the full.
Shaun will now voice his own opinions, he is
motivated and positive about his future and he
leads a full and active social life.
Shaun is now a happy, caring and confident
young man who attends CASE 3 days a week.
Shaun takes great pride in his appearance and
accesses the community confidently. Shaun has
many friends at CASE and is keen to participate
in group activities, he has successfully gained
qualifications in many areas and continues to
learn and develop himself.
Trainee Stories
Louise is 26 years old and lives
with her parents. Louise has a
learning disability and epilepsy
and she experiences mental health
difficulties which impact on her
behaviourally and emotionally
causing Louise to go into crisis if not
supported correctly.
Before Louise came to CASE she
spent most of her time at home
in her bedroom alone with very
little social interaction. Her family
supported Louise the best they
could however they had their own
difficulties to contend with due to
additional complex family issues.
Louise became very isolated
refusing to go out of the house or
attend family social gatherings, this
caused Louise’s mental health to
decline causing her to seriously
neglect herself and self-harm.
Louise initially attended CASE a
couple of hours a week with support
from CASE staff who helped and
encouraged her. After a period of
time we noticed Louise had started
to come to CASE earlier and staying
longer than usual, this was a huge
positive step for Louise and it
showed she was starting to make
her own decisions.
Over a period of time Louise
continued to increase her hours
at CASE until she was eventually
attending 3days a week. After
extensive and wide ranging support
Louise’s confidence increased
enabling her to interact and work
with others; at times Louise will take
part in group activities.
Louise is now a happy individual
and has many friends, she is
able to communicate her needs
and feelings effectively and she
understand the support she
can access from CASE. Louise
continues to have additional
support around her mental health
and a support plan is in place to
ensure any concerns are dealt
with promptly using preventative
measures discussed and agreed
with Louise.
Our thanks go to the many Councillors
and staff of Hull City Council who
have campaigned on behalf of CASE
and recognised the need for CASE to
survive in the community, doing their
upmost to ensure CASE has continued
to provide a service for the people of
Hull and the East Riding.
