Youth Organizing Coordinator Job Description RYSE creates safe spaces grounded in social justice that build youth power for young people to love, learn, educate, heal and transform lives and communities. About RYSE: RYSE is a safe and welcoming center for diverse West Contra Costa youth (ages 13 to 21) that seeks to build youth power and leadership towards the larger vision of personal and community health and transformation. Grounded in social justice values and principles, RYSE provides comprehensive and holistic programming and promotes multi-racial, cross-cultural relationships. RYSE opened its doors in October 2008, and features programming and services across areas of community health; education and career; juvenile justice; media, arts & culture; and youth leadership and organizing. Overview of Program Area: With RYSE’s mission statement as its mandate, the Youth Organizing Department offers programming that strengthens young people’s leadership skills and empowers them to be advocates for change. The Youth Organizing Department provides organizing and political education training, runs a youth organizing internship program and weekly organizing club, supports youth-led organizing efforts and leads and engages in local, regional and statewide policy and basebuilding coalitions. Job Summary and Key Responsibilities: RYSE is seeking a committed and dedicated individual for the Youth Organizing Coordinator position. Under the supervision of the Youth Organizing Director, the Youth Organizing Coordinator is responsible for developing a cadre of youth organizers and leaders who can meaningfully engage in local and statewide campaigns and advocacy efforts. Job responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following: Richmond Youth Organizing Team (RYOT): ♦ Coordinate and support youth engagement for RYSE’s organizing and advocacy efforts; ♦ Co-develop youth generated campaigns and advocacy efforts that are in-service to RYSE’s mission and Theory of Liberation; ♦ Develop youth-friendly social justice, campaign and leadership skill-based curriculum; ♦ Prepare and co-facilitate weekly Organizing Club meetings and trainings; ♦ Create and implement an effective outreach and retention plan and support the RYOT in center-wide and community-based outreach efforts, program activities, actions, and events; ♦ Foster relationships with key community partners; ♦ Participate in and present at community and coalition related events, meetings and conferences by representing the RYOT and elevating youth voice (local, regional, statewide and national); ♦ Support youth participants to engage in the Healthy Richmond and Building Healthy Communities. Youth Organizing Internship Program & Center-wide Youth Development: ♦ Facilitate and contribute to all intern meetings & trainings; ♦ Coordinate schedule, activities, and training benchmarks for a year-long internship program; ♦ Supervise up to 8 youth organizing interns by holding weekly meetings, and monthly individual check-ins to develop/assess work plan, in addition to providing support with their academics, personal and/or work-related issues; ♦ Coordinate with all departments to ensure program integration and support for interns; ♦ Co-coordinate annual overnight leadership retreat; ♦ Recruit participants for programs and events and develop materials and strategies to increase member participation in RYSE’s youth organizing and leadership programs and campaigns; ♦ Work jointly with other departments to support, expand, and elevate the RYSE leadership development model. 1 General: ♦ Participate in staff development opportunities, meetings, and retreats; ♦ Maintain weekly work plan and calendar; ♦ Submit weekly and monthly program reports; ♦ Regular check-in meetings with department and direct supervisor. Qualifications include, but are not limited to: ♦ Strong commitment to racial and social justice; ♦ Knowledge of issues facing low-income youth in Richmond and West Contra Costa County; ♦ Minimum of 2 years experience in youth organizing, youth development, and campaign implementation; ♦ Skilled in workshop creation and facilitation; ♦ Experience working with young people ages 13-21, in a fast-paced multicultural youth environment; ♦ Ability to work within a harm reduction framework; ♦ Strong written and oral communications skills; ♦ Must have a working knowledge of Word, Google Apps and social networking; ♦ Experience coordinating media/communication efforts and updating websites is considered a plus; ♦ Detail-oriented, with strong ability to follow-through, multi-task, and prioritize tasks; ♦ Ability to work independently, as part of a team, and in collaboration with partner agencies and system leaders; ♦ Must be willing and able to work evenings and some weekends as required by RYSE special events and programming; ♦ Drivers license and access to a reliable automobile (with at minimum, liability insurance); ♦ Bilingual English/Spanish, verbal and written, highly desired. This is a full-time position at 40 hours per week. Annual salary of $36,000 - $40,000 (DOE); payable semi-monthly. The position is exempt from overtime pay.
