Free (or almost free) Things to do This Summer!!! What can we do at home? Read, read, read! The more you and your family read, the better readers everyone becomes. Just like you practice hitting the baseball, practice reading. Your children will learn to read more quickly and easily if they have heard many books. Did you know you can check out 50 books at a time from the library? Sing songs! Singing is good for the body and brain. The Rio Rancho Libraries have wonderful selections of CDs for check out. Play Games: Do you remember Chutes and Ladders, Go Fish, and Concentration? When it’s too hot to go outside, get everyone together to play a game. Games teach children many skills, just one of which is how to take turns. Nursery Rhymes: Learning Nursery Rhymes help children get ready to read. They teach children rhythm and rhyme, and also prepare them for school where many teachers assume children know them. You can find many nursery rhymes online, or in books from the library. Count: Count everything: wheels, plates, buttons, … Have your child compare quantities – which has more, which car came in first. All this contributes to a strong number sense. Play: A child’s work is to play. Set a timer, and give your child undivided attention for 10‐30 minutes. Build a blanket fort, or draw pictures together. These are the things your child will remember. Physical Play: Children need to learn physically appropriate play. Roll around on the floor, play tag, or race around the house. The kids love it, and research shows that children who have parents who play physically with them do better in school because they know how to recognize limits. Go for a walk: Take a walk around the neighborhood. Talk about what you see, hear, and smell. You may even meet some of your neighbors! Create: Get out all the scraps of paper. What can your child create with paper, scissors and glue? Make some playdough, and give them some kitchen utensils. It’s fun, and it builds hand strength needed for writing. Make a Play Date: Get together with friends and play! Meet at the park, bring a ball and just have fun together. Computer Games: Preschoolers should not spend more than 30 minutes per day using the computer. Two fun sites are: www.pbskids.org, and www.starfall.com. These sites support early literacy. Online Interactive Books: 30 minutes per day is more than enough! Here are some websites you can access from home: International Digital Children’s Library: Free online books in Spanish, English, French, Filipino, and many more languages! www.childrenslibrary.org Tumblebooks: Online interactive books that are read aloud and animated. Now, available on ipads. www.tumblebooks.com/library Username: rrps Password: books MackinVia: Free access to Tumblebooks and online eReaders. Our login is: ssps password: books
