Roadrunner Report
Rolling Hills Elementary School
May 2013
1460 W. Rolling Hills Drive Fullerton , California 92835 714 447-7795 Randa Schmalfeld, Principal
Dear Rolling Hills Families,
They say that time flies when you’re having fun, and that is certainly the case for us here at Rolling Hills. I can’t
believe that we have only six weeks left in the 2012-2013 school year. And what a busy six weeks we have ahead!
Our State testing begins May 7th for students in 2nd – 6th Grade. This series of assessments in Language Arts,
Mathematics, and Science (for 5th Grade only) offers each student a wonderful opportunity to demonstrate all that
they have learned during the current school year. You can help your child to do their best on these tests by ensuring
that they get a good night’s sleep each night before testing, eat a healthy breakfast, and arrive at school on time and
with a positive attitude. A test schedule and list of resources is included in this newsletter. Results from our STAR
Testing should be sent home before the first day of school, August 12th.
Our Pancake Breakfast will be held on Saturday, May 11th. This is one of our biggest events of the year, and our
Rolling Hills Education Foundation has earmarked all funds raised for our Physical Education and Media Services
Programs. These excellent programs literally depend on our support to survive. We hope that all of our families
will join us for a great morning! We serve the best pancakes in town (including Gluten-Free pancakes again this
year) and it is always fun to see our students perform, check out the gift baskets and opportunity drawings, and chat
with all of your friends from Rolling Hills.
Our Open House, which is always an extra-special annual celebration of the year’s accomplishments, will take
place on Thursday, May 16th from 5:00 to 8:00 pm. This is a wonderful evening. We will have several food trucks
on campus, a band concert, PTA Honorary Service Awards, Book Fair, Our 6th Grade Invention Convention, and of
course, all of our classrooms will be open to highlight the great Roadrunner accomplishments that have taken place
throughout the year! Our full schedule of events cant be found in this newsletter.
Looking ahead, we are hosting a big end of the year Family Fun Night in celebration of our 50th Anniversary on the
last Friday of our 50th Year, June 7th – from 5:00 to 8:00 pm. In honor of our 50th year, we thought it would be fun
to host a Family Picnic, with old-fashioned games, races and contests… and a talent show! Our lengendary alumni
band, Red 40 will be kicking things off with a fun set, we will have our talented Roadrunner Students perform, and
rumour has it that a mystery staff member will be closing the night with an amazing set as well!
These next several weeks will surely zip by! Your kids are growing up right before our very eyes! Treasure each
and every moment, time flies when you’re having fun!
See you at school,
Randa Schmalfeld

Teacher Appreciation Day
Tuesday, May 7th
Each year boys and girls around the country
celebrate their teachers on “The Day of the
Teacher”. This is a day set aside for letting
our dedicated teachers know how much we
appreciate all of the time, love, and effort
that they put into their teaching. We are
spoiling our teachers at Rolling Hills with
two weeks of appreciation. Our PTA Room
Moms decorated doors and brought treats
this last week, and sponsored a special
luncheon on May 3rd . We encourage students
to join in the fun on Tuesday, May 7th by
writing a letter, making a card, or bringing a
flower from their garden for the teacher. 
As the School Year Draws to a Close…
• Our last day of school is Wednesday, June 12th.
Student dismissal time is 12:10 pm for K-6.
• All library books, etc must be returned to Mrs.
Weatrowski by Wednesday, May 28th. Textbooks
will be returned directly to your child’s teacher.
• Our office is open through June 19th and will
reopen July 29th.
• If you will be moving over the summer or your child
will be attending another school in the area, please
notify the office so that we may update our grade
level enrollment numbers for next year.
Thinking About Next Year?
This is the time of year when some parents think about
classroom choices for the coming year. We encourage
you to trust our principal, Mrs. Schmalfeld, and our
teachers to build classes for next year with the best
interests of your child as well as nicely balanced
classrooms in mind. This usually happens before teachers
leave for the summer.
As of the start of May, our staffing for next year is not yet
finalized, and we anticipate that probable teaching
assignments for next year will be set by Mid-May. If you
have a strong preference for next year’s teacher, you may
complete a request form in our office. Tenative teaching
assignments will be made by May 20th and Parent Request
Forms will be available as of that date. These requests are
given strong consideration in the process of building
classes, but requested classroom placement is not
guaranteed. The deadline for submitting parent requests is
May 31st. Questions? Please contact Mrs. Schmalfeld. 
All the Arts Summer Enrichment Camp

in the areas of art, music, drama, and dance – all taiught by
the teachers who come to Rolling Hills during the school
year! For more info:

CALIFORNIA STATE STAR TESTING
MAY 7th - 15th
The California Standards Tests offer a terrific opportunity for
Rolling Hills students to demonstrate the great learning that has been taking place at our school all year long.
Our Testing at Rolling Hills will begin next week and continue through Wednesday, May 15th. We try to
make this a fun event for students, with special music at arrival, special sparkly pencils, and our special
peppermint candies.
In order to ensure that your student does their best on the test, we ask that all students get a good night's
sleep and eat a nutritious breakfast before each of the tests. It is also very important that students arrive at
school on time, as testing will begin each day promptly at 9:00 am and concludes before morning recess.
Student who arrive late will be sent to a Kindergarten or First Grade Classroom and will take a make-up test
at a later time.
Additional information regarding the California Standards Tests, including resources and information for
parents is available at the California Department of Education Website at http://www.cde.ca.gov/. In
addition, the following website is a great resource for parents and includes sample questions for students:
