Founded in 1981 to meet the spiritual, physical, emotional, and intellectual needs of adults with special needs, The Mustard Seed provides a loving and protected environment with meaningful activities which allow the “Seedsters” to fulfill the potential God has created within them. Forrest Bratley, otherwise lovingly known as “Bud,” has been involved with The Mustard Seed since the very beginning, and it shows. Bud’s passion for The Mustard Seed has been evident to all who have had the pleasure of working with or simply knowing Bud—Seedster, supporter, and staff member alike. During his nearly three decades of involvement at The Mustard Seed, Bud has served in numerous capacities. Bud has helped move mountains at The Mustard Seed in his many years of service as a board member, a parent of a Seedster, a volunteer, interim executive director, and, since 2012, the executive director. Under Bud’s leadership, The Mustard Seed experienced growth of its Day Program, an increase in community partnerships, and the expansion of its Flowood campus that included construction of a new women’s home, activity centers, parking lot, and workshop. “Bud has been an invaluable asset to The Mustard Seed for over 27 years,” Paul Rogers, president of The Mustard Seed’s Board of Directors, said. “His devotion to and passion for the ministry here have truly been inspirational to the staff and volunteers, as well as to the families we work with daily. Though he will be stepping out of the lead role, he’ll always remain an integral member of The Mustard Seed family.” Sam Clark Workshop Assistant Charlie Floyd Day Staff Instructor Stephanie Jury Day Staff Instructor Janis Kent Day Staff Instructor Daniel Townsend Day Staff Instructor Debbie Burnham Bells of Faith Director Jayne Crenshaw Bells of Faith Accompanist Janet & Randy Gerleman Women’s Group Home Parents Phyllis & Steve Sherer Men’s Group Home Parents Congratulations, Bud, and thank you for your years of service to The Mustard Seed! “Well done, good and faithful servant! After serving as the director of community relations for the past four and a half years, I have realized the strength and stability which carry The Mustard Seed. Being an organization founded by several families of individuals with special needs, we have been rooted on a firm foundation. With many of those same families continuing their dedication and support to this wonderful place, we continue to build upon and grow on the values with which we were founded 34 years ago. In the coming years we will continue to nurture the lives of our Seedsters, enriching their talents, abilities, and interests in everything we do. With plans of expanding both the residential and day programs, we will have the ability and space to offer additional activities geared towards individual interests and talents among each Seedster. I, along with our outstanding staff, am dedicated to making our founding families proud of the legacy they started and nurturing their dreams which became reality. With each new day at The Mustard Seed, we are reminded of the support we receive to continue our mission. In this 2015 Branches newsletter, I hope you too will see the numerous volunteers, monetary contributors, in-kind supporters, families, and especially Seedsters who are the true hands and feet of Christ at The Mustard Seed. The Mustard Seed is a community full of friendships and achievements which bring joy to the lives of so many. I invite you to come visit our campus so you can experience the pure joy of being a part of The Mustard Seed!! Led by one of the Best Board member and lifetime friend of The Mustard Seed Paul Rogers has always had a passion for children and adults with disabilities, as well as the families who support them. As a father of children with disabilities, Paul understands firsthand the challenges that are presented to the special needs community. Over 20 years ago Paul and his wife, Mandy, started the Challenger Softball league that serves more than 300 children and adults with special needs. Paul has also served as the co-founder of Hope Hollow Ministries, a camp for children and young adults with special needs, and he has served on the board of directors for the Mississippi Coalition for Citizens 2 with Disabilities. Currently, Paul is serving as the president for The Mustard Seed Board of Directors and donates endless knowledge, time, resources, and, most importantly, his heart into furthering our ministry here. However, Paul isn’t alone in his efforts. We are so blessed to be surrounded by a wonderful board of directors that plays an integral role in the day-today activities and long-term goals of The Mustard Seed. If you ever feel led to serve on The Mustard Seed's Board of Directors, please contact Executive Director Del Harrington at your convenience. We are able to do what we do because of people who give! Canvas Paintings While the Seedsters’ amazing artwork and creativity have always been on display, 2015 was an extra exciting year for what’s becoming one of the Seedsters’ favorite activities. The Mustard Seed's art instructor, Amber Carraway, has taken a Mustard Seed specialty in the form of canvas artwork to a whole new level, and it’s quickly gaining everyone’s attention. “When a Seedster comes into the art room, it’s a different, more personal environment for them, and they get a lot more one-on-one direction when it comes to cultivating their type of painting style,” Carraway said. “The Seedsters come in with their own thoughts, and I just help them find the most practical and creative ways to make their vision come alive.” One example of the practical teaching Amber referenced has been seen through her work with one of our Seedsters, Allen Gardner. Carraway noticed early on that Allen tended to do a few dots on his artwork already, and she thought of using PVC pipe, paint lids, and cup bottoms for him to trace circles around in various sizes. Since then, she’s really seen Gardner thrive in both his canvas and ceramic artwork. “I’ve seen some get better at blending paint, building on their own creative style, and even using different things like buttons or sequins to highlight their canvases.” Carraway said. “It’s been very rewarding for me to be a part of the canvas artwork, and I think it’s equally rewarding for the Seedsters when they see their finished piece.” Ornament of the Year Mustard Seed’s ornament of the year is always a big hit. Don’t miss out on this colorful bird. Get yours for $10 each before they fly away. Each year the Mustard Seed expands their ornament selection with the addition of our ornament of the year, which changes annually. There are 800 birds this year that the Seedsters painted with their special patterns and styles. The ornament of the year is the only ceramic that we date with the year it was created. What a special tradition to start by purchasing a truly one-of-a-kind ornament each year from The Mustard Seed. We always sell out, so don’t hesitate and stop by our gift shop today! 3 “Racin’ for the Seed” is a 5K run/walk followed by a 15-mile bike ride and another 1-mile walk/run. Sa v an n ah STev en WE b Wi ll Wi lliam Born in Amory, Mississippi, Logan Chew is a 31-year-old resident of the Women’s Group Home and has been a loyal part of The Mustard Seed since she was 21. Her parents, Cindy and Dave Chew, are also integral parts of The Mustard Seed with Cindy serving as gift shop assistant for the past eight years. During her time off, Logan loves to dote on her adorable nieces and nephews and spend time with the rest of her family in Madison. “The Mustard Seed is a big part of the Chew family,” Cindy said. “Logan is at home here. She really feels this is her second home, and I don’t see that ever changing.” Dave echoed Cindy’s sentiments by saying, “I’m glad she has a place and people she enjoys— that give her the best quality of life.” One of the first things you’ll notice about Logan are her bright blue eyes, spirited dance moves, and love for anything Weight Watchers related. She enjoys hanging out with her friends at The Mustard Seed and adorning her ceramics with touches of baby blue, which is her favorite color. When she’s not painting or at Weight Watchers, Logan loves to spend her time at The Mustard Seed in coffee club, the workshop, or the sign language class. Logan’s sweet spirit and empathy for others are qualities that set her apart and make anyone—staff, Seedster, or volunteer—instantly her new friend. Seedsters Lose with Big Weight Watchers A lesser known journey a few of our ladies have been on for the past three years is Weight Watchers. Although the Weight Watchers journey was started by almost a complete accident, it is something that has truly become a large blessing to our ladies. It all started a little over three years ago when Janet Gerleman, our Women’s Group Home mother, took Megan to Weight Watchers. Janet already attended and was trying to give Megan a bit of inspiration. From that day on, Megan was smitten and wanted in on the fun herself. After Megan started attending regularly, Logan wanted to join, then came Sarah, Emily, and Amanda. Each of our Weight Watchers girls attends a weekly meeting where they weigh in and learn about healthy living. Both Logan and Emily have since met their goal weights and are now lifetime members of Weight Watchers. However, the rest of the girls aren’t far behind. Now, three years later, the Weight Watchers ladies have lost a combined total of 194 pounds. “It’s been really good for the girls, not just physically but mentally.” Janet said. “It’s become a good social thing for the ladies because they genuinely root and cheer each other on in their individual weight goals. I’m very proud of them.” 7 A Special Note from a Special Seedster Family Member Although The Mustard Seed has always been, and will continue to be, extremely committed to preserving and strengthening our Seedsters' bonds with their families at home, it is no secret that, in many ways, the staff and Seedsters here have become a lot like one big family as well. When we say that we care about our Seedsters, we mean that we care about them in both general ways and more specific ways. The general feelings of whether or not they are safe, happy, sick, upset, and healthy are what most people notice, as they are our day-to-day upfront priorities. However, the specific feelings, which Dear Mustard Seed, are each of our Seedsters' own quirks and personalities, we also place equal importance on. Whether that may look like finding out the way a particular Seedster likes her coffee, noticing which chair one of our guys likes to sit in during devotion and reserving that for him, or even learning what music station they prefer to listen to while painting, we care for these Seedsters like they are our own. Because of this, it warms our hearts in ways we can’t express to receive letters from the families, and we wanted to share a bit of one we received from Joseph’s parents, Gloria and Roy Garretson. . Held at The Ivy on August 25, Tailgating in Style featured a special tailgating food and décor presentation, music by Raphael Semmes, a performance by The Mustard Seed Bells of Faith Handbell Choir, a tailgating-themed raffle, and a delicious lunch provided by Fresh Cut Catering and Floral. As the event came to an end, all bellies were full, all minds were on football, and all hearts were touched. In addition to that, $5,000 was raised to benefit The Mustard Seed. All proceeds from Tailgating in Style benefitted The Mustard Seed Ladies Auxiliary fund and will be allocated to the newly formed Perkins Pantry, which will be utilized by both the Men’s and Women’s Group Homes. We would like to say a special thank you to The Mustard Seed Ladies Auxiliary for all of their hard work, as well as to all of the businesses and individuals who support The Mustard Seed. 9 Gift Shop Goodies 10 The Mustard Seed's The Seedsters' beautiful ceramics contribute almost $200,000 annually. In addition to helping maintain the program of The Mustard Seed, the production of these unique pieces allows our community of nearly 40 adults with developmental disabilities to engage in and enjoy the theraputic benefits of art. Mustard Seed Ceramics make great gifts for Christmas, birthdays, Easter, Mother's Day, happies for friends, and much more. Gift Shop hours are Monday through Friday from 9:00– 4:00 and 10:00–3:00 on the second Saturday of each month. November and December always bring additional Saturday shopping days which are publicized at www.mustardseedinc.org. The Mustard Seed Gift Shop has started a new venture of partnering with other artisans from around the state, carrying Mississippi-made candles, lazy susans, pallet trays, soaps, packaged food mixes, and bath fizzies. An exciting and special partnership is with Grassroots Candle Company out of Columbus, Mississippi. They make all of their candles in house and use pure soy wax and 100% essential oil blends in each candle. The owners and founders of Grassroots Candle Company have a true heart and giving spirit and genuinely care about the community and, in our case, the Seedsters and their ceramics. On a sunny day in June, three lucky Seedsters were paid a visit by Chris from Grassroots Candle Company. Chris was on campus to take the Seedsters step by step through the candle-making process. From start to finish, they worked as a team to come up with a scent for a candle that is exclusive to The Mustard Seed. After the Seedsters worked to decide on a scent, Chris took his essential oils back to the studio in Columbus to pour the new “Seedster Love” scent into colorful Mustard Seed ceramics. These candles have been an amazing collaboration between two Mississippi industries with big hearts. Lights are being lit around our community and lives are being blessed! Kroger Support! Because The Mustard Seed is a private non-profit that, by choice, doesn’t receive state or federal funding, we take a risk each year by not knowing what we may or may not receive in donations. Year after year, now 34 years into our ministry at The Mustard Seed, God has been faithful to provide for us… because people like YOU have been faithful to give. Many times, even as staff, it hits us deeply how generous people have been, and continue to be, to our ministry, and we want to shout it from the rooftop. It is the most humbling experience. Whether it is a monetary donation or an “in-kind” donation from items listed on our wish list, please know, from the bottom of our hearts, how appreciative we are for your gifts and how much it directly impacts our Seedsters' lives. We’ve always believed you can’t outgive God, and if that’s true, we hope we get to see how much each of you will receive in your own blessings one day for your generosity to our ministry. A million times, thank you!! “Give and it will be given to you. They will pour into your lap a good measure, pressed down, shaken together, and running over. By your standard of measure, it will be measured to you.” Luke 6:38 Thank you for generously giving to the ministry of The Mustard Seed. It is through donations that The Mustard Seed is able to provide an extraordinary experience for adults with special needs. The Mustard Seed is a great way to remember friends and loved ones during the holidays or any other special time throughout the year. Giving through The Mustard Seed is special, and it's a gift that blesses the lives of nearly 40 extraordinary people. Each honorarium and memoriam recipient will receive a card acknowledging your gift, and as always, your gift is tax deductible. Contact The Mustard Seed at 601-992-3556 to support our ministry. Reminder!! In order to claim donations as charitable deductions on your 2015 income tax return, donations should be postmarked by December 31, 2015. Online donations can be made by visiting www.mustardseedinc.org. Is your info correct? Please email Jennifer Floyd at [email protected] if your contact information is incorrect so that changes can be made to our records. 15 Mustard Seed Volunteers To say that volunteers are an integral part of The Mustard Seed would be an understatement. Great examples of this are workshop volunteers JoAnn, Karen, and Sue. These ladies regularly volunteer their time in the workshop by cleaning greenware and have done so selflessly for years. Thank you, JoAnn, Karen, and Sue! Haircuts by Parlor Salon We are continually grateful for the sweet ladies at The Parlor Salon in Gluckstadt for coming out every eight weeks and giving our Seedsters haircuts free of charge. Owner Maghen Lee and her crew of very talented hair stylists have been doing this for our Seedsters for years now and never ask for anything in return. It is one of the sweetest displays of repeated generosity we see on campus. We simply can’t say thank you enough to The Parlor Salon! We Back the Badge We have a lot of love at The Mustard Seed for the Flowood Police Department and all local law enforcement officers who risk their lives daily to ensure our protection. On July 7, our Seedsters wore blue in excitement for the day’s activities that included a motorcycle show, K-9 officer demonstration, and visits from over 20 law enforcement officers including K-9 Officer Kilo and K-9 Officer Duchess. The Flowood Police Department is so gracious to us and continually goes out of its way to patrol and protect our campus. We are proud to say we BACK THE BADGE! 16 A Look into Two New Classes at Mustard Seed University Gardening This summer a total of 16 Seedsters participated in the gardening class where they were able to learn and experience all the work and preparation that goes into growing produce—from tilling ground to planting seeds to pruning, watering, and, eventually, harvesting the final product. Led by Erin Williams and Charlie Floyd, the gardening class was a lot of work on hot days, but our Seedsters seemed to really enjoy the process. As the class came to a close at the end of the summer and all the peas were shelled, the Seedsters learned that if they can establish their roots— like the roots of plants—in hard work, dedication, patience, and a little trust, they can accomplish anything in life they set their minds to. Maybe at the end of the day, people, like plants, just need a little cultivation, a lot of patience, and, sometimes, a little guidance and patience to help keep them straight. The Seedsters also put together a farming binder that included lessons they learned throughout the class and delivered it to Mississippi Farm Bureau Federation (MSFB) President Mike McCormick as a way to say thank you to Mississippi farmers for their hard work. This binder is on display to the public at the MSFB building off of Ridgewood Road. Woodworking Woodworking is a new class that started in June of 2015 and is centered around making wood pieces that not only sell in our gift shop, but also simultaneously allow the Seedsters an opportunity to create with different mediums. Taught by Joshua Zerbe, this class has had only a few months under the belt but has already become a huge hit and Seedster favorite! Made from old pallets we receive from various shipments, the Seedsters have helped to create wood Christmas trees, stables for our ceramic nativity sets, and stands for the beautiful Mississippi plates. Savannah Wilson, who was one of the first Seedsters to help with woodworking, immediately ran back after her first session and said, “I got to play with a drill, sander, and chainsaw!” Although in reality Savannah actually didn’t touch a chainsaw and instead used a chop-saw, the excitement she experienced has been seen by every Seedster who has participated. Languages Since the beginning of Mustard Seed University around two years ago, the love of languages and exploring different cultures have remained constant and coveted learning opportunities. German, taught by Stephanie Jury, a day staff instructor with eight years of training including time spent in a six-week German exchange program, will begin her seventh semester teaching German in January of 2016. The 19 students who have participated in the German classes have learned many new words and phrases including colors, months, the alphabet, and basic dialogues they are taught to speak in German and then must translate back to English. In addition to German, French is also a language class that has been offered for a while now at Mustard Seed University. Taught by Charlie Floyd, a day staff instructor with nine years of training and a minor in French, the class has included 25 students throughout the 10 semesters it’s been taught. These students have learned food & drink, basic vocabulary, numbers, the alphabet, common greetings, and more. Another way that languages have been integrated into daily life at The Mustard Seed is through the sign language class. This class started as a way to improve and deepen relationships with the three Seedsters who actively use sign language in day-to-day interactions. The 20 students who have participated in the class have learned about the different components that influence sign language, such as body language and facial expressions, as well as common phrases.
