Mount Everest, 1994-1999: A Bibliography

Mount Everest, 1994-1999:
A Bibliography
Arthur Buell
The latter half of the 1990s saw a surge in public interest in Mount Everest. The tragic events
of 1996 and subsequent publication of Jon Krakauer's best-selling Into Thin Air provided the
initial impetus for this increased interest, and the discovery of George Mallory's body on the
slopes of Everest in May 1999 further fueled the public's appetite for accounts of Everest.
An authoritative bibliography of Everest literature already exists, Audrey Salkeld's excellent
Climbing Mount Everest: The Bibliography. However, because Salkeld's book was published
in 1993, it doesn't include the spate of literature written in the Intervening years. The purpose
of this bibliography is to document Everest-related literature from 1994 to 1999.
Included in this bibliography are books, periodicals, newspapers, and videorecordings.
Databases searched include Lexis-Nexis Academic Universe, Expanded Academic ASAP,
Academic Search Elite, ArticleFirst, WorldCat, Psyclnfo, Social Science Index, CARL Un
Cover, MEDLlNE, CINAHL, and Dow Jones Interactive. I have attempted to be comprehensive
with the books, periodicals, and videorecordings. I was more selective with the newspapers,
simply because of the huge number of articles available and the large degree of overlap be
tween them. I restricted my search for newspaper articles to longer articles in the Major News
papers section of the Lexis-Nexis Academic Universe General News file by using the search
statement (mt. everest or mount everest) and at least6(everest) and length>1 000.
The entries are in I\IILA format and are listed in chronological order and then alphabetically
for citations with the same date. For articles whose subjects cannot be gleaned from the cita
tions themselves or their chronological context, I have included brief elaborations in brackets
following the title field. At the end of the article is a small listing of Web sites that may be of in
terest to the Everest aficionado.
