Opportunity International’s partner in
Honduras, locally known as Instituto Para
el Desarrollo Hondureno (IDH), has been
working as a microfinance not-for-profit
organization for over 40 years serving
poor entrepreneurs with loans and
training in departments (provinces)
throughout the country. Opportunity
International Canada has a longstanding
partnership with IDH dating back to 1999.
IDH is in the process of ‘scaling up’
institutionally. This new legal status will
enhance their financial product offerings
and allow them to also offer interestbearing savings accounts to their clients.
IDH is looking to expand their
geographic footprint this year, their client
training, and their product offerings.

Elsa Ramirez, 25 and owner of a tacos and flautas business, is an excellent example of
a successful IDH Individual client. She has developed a wholesale business, employs
seven people and sells as far as the Guatemalan border.
Elsa and her employees work Tuesday to Friday, beginning at 7am and go “until the
order is finished”. Although it varies depending on the order, typically they make 1700
flautas a day.
Elsa’s hopes for the future? She wants to buy another vehicle to expand her business
further – as she knows, that the more it expands, the more employees she hires, and
the greater impact she can have in her community.

Opportunity International Canada (OIC), in partnership with our Implementing Partner in Honduras (IDH), is raising
funds for multiple projects this year: namely Capacity Building, Mobile Banking, and Branch Expansions. IDH is
growing from a place of health and has projected an assertive and strategic growth plan. Opportunity Canada would
like to further its partnership with IDH for the people of Honduras. If you would like to be a part of this, below are
IDH’s most pressing funding needs for 2017.
NEW BRANCHES – EXPANDING THEIR FOOTPRINT - $150,000 USD EACH
IDH would like to open three new branches in 2017 – in the cities of El Progreso, Comayaguela, and La Entrada. IDH
forecasts that each of these branches will reach sustainability within 18 months. Consider joining them as they
extend their geographic reach.

El Progreso - $150K for start-up and operations
Comayaguela - $150K for start-up and operations
La Entrada – $125K for start-up and operations
SEED FUNDING FOR THEIR NEW BRANCH LOAN PORTFOLIOS - $250,000 - $1M USD
IDH has a 98% loan repayment rate, which means dollars donated to the loan portfolio keep giving and giving and
giving. Loans are lent out; they are repaid, and lent out again. However, each branch needs seed money in order to
start its portfolio. IDH is looking for partners to fund its growing loan portfolio in their quest to serve more clients.
IDH MOBILE – LAUNCHING MOBILE BANKING IN HONDURAS - $75,000 USD
2017 is the year IDH will roll out Mobile Banking. They are seeking $75,000 to launch “IDH Mobile”, customize the
product, secure the connectivity, buy devices and train their staff.
TRAINING – SME “ENCOUNTER DAYS” - $20,000 USD
IDH has identified SME (Small and Medium Enterprise) clients as a key target audience for growth. SME clients grow
their businesses, create jobs in their communities, and are a stabilizing force in a developing country’s economy.
IDH has designed SME-specific training for these clients and hosts “Encounter Days”. Join them as they desire to
roll these out regionally.
The IDH Team looks forward to
partnering with you.
