What is a Sol Advocate??
We define advocacy as:
“The ability to define ourselves, name
ourselves, create, think and speak for
ourselves so we never risk being defined,
named, created or spoken for by others.”

Good Afternoon Sol Families! This week, our advocates had the opportunity of a lifetime when we hosted Eva Trenk, a survivor of the holocaust, as a guest speaker. The holocaust is one of the most horrific events in history, where an estimated 6 million Jewish people were killed by Adolf Hitler’s Nazi regime. Ms. Trenk was five years old when she was placed in a concentration camp and 80% of her family was killed. After World War II ended, she spent much of her life moving to different countries with her family who worked hard to learn new languages and to try to fit into new cultures. While it is impossible to compare the severity of the plights of different people, many of our kids and families could relate to having to move to a new country to escape persecution or poverty and to try to learn a new language and a new culture while facing discrimination based on where you are from. Her speech was a strong reminder of how a negative thought about a group of people can turn into discriminatory action and genocide. We should always challenge our own thoughts and our kids’ comments with “why did I just think that about that group of people? What do I need to change about my thinking so I am not pre-‐judging them?” It is this level of critical thought that will allow us to continue to progress as a society and as a human race. Somos Sol! Mingares (Ms. Minix & Mr. Melgares) Updates for Families
Dismissal at 1 p.m. on Thursday/NO ASES ON THURSDAY
All children need to be picked up at 1 p.m. on Thursday. There is no after school program. Spring Break
Spring Break will be from Friday, March 27th to Monday, April 6th. Students will return to school on Tuesday, April 7th at 10 a.m. Doors will open at 9:30 a.m. Teachers will have a professional development session on Tuesday morning. All students will have spring break homework to complete. Parent Conferences & Report Cards
Report cards and parent conferences will be held on April 15th-‐17th. Please check Illuminate or call the office to check your child’s current grades and make sure that they are turning in their work. Student report cards go into their transcripts, which are taken into consideration when students are applying to magnet and private high schools. Blocking Driveways During Dismissal
Please be good neighbors and make sure that we are respecting all traffic laws during morning arrival and afternoon dismissal. This includes not blocking our neighbors’ driveways while we wait in the car line. We have received official notice of complaint from the Sheriff's Office because of our constant violation of traffic laws that cause unnecessary hazard and congestion. To avoid citation during our arrival and dismissal, PLEASE follow the car line and cross-‐walk rules. These rules have been created for the safety of our Advocates and our community. Thanks for being great neighbors! Accelerated Reader Goals—Due Thursday, March 26th
The Accelerated Reader goals are due Thursday, March 26th. Please make sure that your children have read enough to meet their AR goals by Thursday. Meeting the monthly AR goal goes in as a project grade in English class for your child. Meeting 100% of the goal = 100% A+ on that project. If your child fails to make reading progress during the month and receives a 0/100, it very negatively affects the grade. Please ask your child to login to AR and show you their progress so far this month. Nutrition Night
A BIG shoutout to Ms. Zulma Rodriguez and the SPA Committee for leading an incredibly informative Nutrition Night this week. Families were treated to food catered by Revolution Foods, yoga, zumba dancing and much more! Our community is very grateful! SPA Meeting Updates
Thank you to Mona Navarro for organizing last week’s Echo Parenting workshop. Next Month, the SPA committee will host Drew Goltermann, principal of Hybrid High School East, to present on high school options and how parents can prepare for high school. The meeting will be held on Thursday, April 23rd from 4:30-‐5:30. Mark your calendars now! *Get excited for the FINAL FOUR, MARCH MADNESS IS AT KIPP SOL! The fearless women of the Lady Advocates will take on Fast and Furious in a playoff game on Weds, 3/25 at 6pm. We are seeded 4th in the Tournament, and will play either in the Championship or 3rd Place game on Friday. All games are at Pecan Park. Please show your KIPP Sol pride at our games by wearing all black with orange (the ladies will play in black!) ASES Space in 6th Grade
The after school program has some space in the 6th grade program. Please contact Mr. Alfaro if you are interested. Spring Break Homework All students will receive a Spring Break homework packet for each class. Please make sure that your child completes the packet over spring break and returns it to school on Tuesday, April 7th. Homework packets will count as a project grade so it is essential that all students complete the packet in order to not negatively affect their grades before the end of the third quarter. If your child loses the copy of their packet, a copy will be placed in Google Classroom for download. Enjoy your spring break! 5th Grade Incentives Field Trip
If your child received an invitation to Muligans on Tuesday, April 7th, please make sure that your child arrives to school no later than 10 am (doors open at 9:30 am). The bus will be leaving promptly at 10:15 am and we don't want to leave anyone behind! Spring Break and Quarter 3 Report Cards
Every student will receive a packet to work through during Spring Break. The packet will allow for weekends 'off', but will help keep brains sharp over the 10-‐day break. Please help your child pace out the work so that it comes back 100% complete. Quarter 3 grades will be finalized the Friday following Spring Break, so there is little time for making up missed work. Student eligibility for End of Year Field Lessons to San Diego and Catalina will be determined after Quarter 3 and invitations will go out during Parent Teacher Conferences (please make sure you've confirmed your conference time!).
