Winston
Winston's job at the Ministry of truth is to alter or rectify records to
create documentary evidence supporting the party. As soon as he
finishes with the day's assignment, he drops the instructions into
the memory hole, where he assumes they are destroyed along with
the papers containing the original information.
The Records Department
Tom parsons
The Records Department is only a small branch of the Ministry of
Truth, the primary purpose of which is to supply the citizens of

Canteen
Note: Winston loves his work despite its tediousness. As part of Big
Brother's order of the day, Winston plans to commemorate the
fictitious Comrade Ogilvy with a few false lines and photographs to
bring this person into existence. THE CANTEEN
While having lunch at the canteen, Winston sees his comrade
Syme. Syme's current project is working on the eleventh edition of
the newspeak dictionary. The new dictionary will simplify synonyms
and eliminate antonyms. Syme offers the word ungood as an
example of how newspeak narrows the range of thought. Announcement
The conversation between Syme and Winston is interrupted by
Tom Parsons as he (Tom) collects block dues from Winston. From
the telescreen comes an announcement from the Minipax that
because of the workers' output, the standard of living had
increased at least 20 percent. The announcement acknowledges
that the chocolate rations will be raised to 20 grams; meanwhile,
the announcement yesterday acknowledged the chocolate will be
reduced from 30g to 20g. Winston is left contemplating the gullibility of the people of
Oceania. Skills
