The kit is best suited to those anglers who feel comfortable with minor
repair work on their reels. If you do not feel comfortable disassembling
your Van Staal reel, please have your reel serviced by a Van Staal-trained
technician. It is important to follow the steps outlined in this manual
carefully. The procedures are easily performed, but care must be taken
in order to prevent any damage to your reel.
Any damage caused by the owner when performing self service can void
the Van Staal warranty.
To begin the service process, the outside of your reel
must be thoroughly cleaned.
Cover the reel with WD-40 and wipe down with paper
towels to remove any grime or salt deposits.
After you have cleaned the reel, you can begin
the disassembly process.
Step 1:
Remove the crank handle by turning it in the opposite
direction from a retrieve.
Step 2:
Remove the drag knob, and then remove the spool.
Thoroughly clean both with WD-40 and set aside in
your tray.
Step 3:
Using the Universal Tool supplied with the kit,
turn the sidecover nut counter-clockwise to
remove. NOTE: Do not hold flyer/rotor when
removing side cover. The rotor must be able
to spin freely.
Remove sidecover and main gear and set aside.
Step 4:
Using Q-Tips, clean as much of the grease from
the inside of the reel body as you can.
Step 5:
Remove the Traverse Guide. The Traverse Guide is
the elliptical piece in the center of the reel that is
attached to the shaft. Use your closed-end 5/16”
wrench to loosen the nut and lock washer, then
remove using your fingers. Slide the Traverse Guide
off the shaft, clean thoroughly, and place the guide,
nut and lock washer into your tray.
Lift shaft out of reel, clean thoroughly and place
into your tray.
Step 6:
Finish cleaning thoroughly inside the body of the
reel with WD-40 and paper towels.
Step 7:
Remove the main gear from the sidecover and
clean thoroughly with WD-40 and dry with a
paper towel. The gear can be easily removed
by holding onto the sidecover and pushing the
gear shaft through.
Step 8:
Remove the sidecover O-Ring using your dental
pick and discard. This O-Ring may be difficult
to see, it is located along the outer edge of the
sidecover.
Step 9:
Lubricate a new sidecover O-Ring with light oil
and place over the outer edge of the sidecover,
and gently roll the seal down over the threads
until it pops into the groove.
Step 10:
Remove the Sidecover Oil Seal with your screwdriver.
Using the edge of the screwdriver, make sure to get
underneath the seal itself to avoid any damage to
the sidecover. Discard the old seal. NOTE: Removing
this seal will expose the needle bearing, clutch and
radial bearing.
Step 11:
Lubricate a new Sidecover Oil Seal with light oil and
press the seal into the side so that the letters on
the seal are DOWN. Push seal into place and press
around the seal so it is snug.
Step 12:
Remove the flyer/rotor by using your allen key
to remove the 4 small screws that hold the
flyer/rotor in place. Place these screws onto
your tray and lift the flyer/rotor off the reel.
Step 13:
Clean the underside of the flyer/rotor with WD40, and wiping with paper towels to remove
any salt or sand.
Step 14:
Remove the Quad Seal with your dental pick. The
Quad Seal is about 1/4” down into the sleeve guide
and may be difficult to get to. Since you will be
discarding this old seal, don’t worry about damaging
it when removing.
Step 15:
Clean the inside of the sleeve guide with
WD-40 and Q-Tips.
Step 16:
Slide the Quad Seal tool (metal shaft) into the sleeve guide.
This tool slides through the sleeve and into the body and
helps to position the seal properly. It also prevents the
seal from dropping too far into the sleeve guide.
Step 17:
Lubricate a new Quad Seal with light oil, fold, or pinch the
new Quad Seal and insert it into the sleeve guide. Use the
plastic Quad Seal Tool to push the seal in until it sits in
its groove.
After seating the new Quad Seal, carefully remove the metal
tool out through the new seal using a twisting motion.
Step 18:
Replace the spool shaft by sliding it down through
the sleeve guide, twisting it as it passes through
the Quad Seal. Make sure the end where the Traverse
Guide attaches is slid through first.
Test that the Quad Seal is seated properly by covering
over the bottom of the sleeve guide with your finger.
With the bottom of the sleeve guide sealed with
your finger, lift up on the shaft. Pressure should
cause the shaft to want to slide back down. Also,
an audible “pop” should be heard if you remove
your finger from the sleeve.
If you do not get pressure during this procedure,
the seal may not be seated properly.
Step 19:
Inspect Traverse Guide for wear or deflection
(bending), then slide it onto end of the shaft.
Step 20:
Replace lock washer and nut and snug tight
with your fingers. Push the Traverse Guide to
the top of the reel cavity, hold in place with
your fingers and tighten down the nut with your
5/16” closed-end wrench.
Step 21:
Lubricate the mechanics inside your reel with the
lubrication that is supplied with your self-service kit.
Liberally apply the lubrication to the cavities on each
side of the pinion gear, as well as the pinion gear
itself. Take care not to over-lubricate. Your Van Staal
reel is completely sealed, therefore the lubrication
you apply will always stay in place.
Step 22:
Using a Q-Tip, apply a thin layer of lubrication to
the radial bearing in the shaft of the sidecover. Also,
fill the cage of the clutch bearing with lubrication.
Do not put lubrication directly onto the sidecover.
Step 23:
Check seal orientation of main gear. Insert the
shaft of the main gear into the side plate cover,
turning gently. Check to make sure the seal is
making contact around the shaft.
Remove the main gear from the sidecover and
apply a small bead of lubrication on the gear’s
teeth.
Step 24:
With the Traverse Guide right in the center of
the reel cavity, position the main gear over it
so that the traverse pin (on the main gear) is
sitting within the opening of the Traverse Guide.
The position of the traverse pin is extremely
important.
Step 25:
Place sidecover over gear shaft, but do not tighten.
Push down on the sidecover and turn counterclockwise a full revolution to check that the traverse
pin is properly inside the traverse guide. NOTE:
When the gear is properly located and the sidecover
is turned counter-clockwise, the shaft will rise and
fall.
It’s very important that you verify the shaft action
before you tighten the sidecover. If you do not get
the shaft to move correctly the first time, start this
step over until you do.
After the shaft’s action has been verified, tighten
the sidecover (clockwise) with the included Universal
Tool.
Step 26:
Replace the flyer and insert the screws. Tighten
screws gradually, alternating evenly until all are
tight. Do not apply Lock-Tite to the screws.
Step 27:
Apply the included lubrication to the threaded
end of the main gear shaft where the handle
is attached, and replace the handle taking care
not to cross-thread.
Wipe away any excess lubrication after the
handle is tightened.
Step 28:
Place the spool back onto the shaft. Use the included
lubrication on the threaded end of the shaft where
the drag knob will be positioned.
Replace the drag knob taking care not to crossthread.
The procedures for self-servicing your reel are now
complete!
Important Notes
Frequency:
The frequency that your reel will require service is determined by the amount of usage, and under what types of
conditions you use your reel. In general, “light”use reels should be serviced every 12 - 18 months, while a reel seeing
constant action (and frequent submersion in saltwater) may need service as many as 2 - 3 times a year.
Self-Service Care and Caution:
A most important step in the self-service procedure is making sure that the traverse pin on the inside of the main
gear is placed within the Traverse Guide. A full counter-clockwise revolution should be made to insure proper placement
before tightening down the sidecover. Failure to execute this critical step properly can cause your reel to “lock.”
