INTRODUCTION
The ChildrenCount Survey 0-11 is a standardised, reliable and tested survey instrument. The majority of questions contained within
the survey are from existing measures. These existing measures were selected on the basis that they accurately and reliably measure
the well-being of children and influences upon this. The measures have been tried and tested with similar populations elsewhere and
found to produce high reliability and validity. In other words, we can be confident the ChildrenCount Survey 0-11 consistently, and with
reasonable precision, measures the well-being of children and influences upon this.
Please note: a number of these existing measures are subject to copyright (e.g. Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire) and cannot
be copied or modified without the necessary licences. The ChildrenCount Survey 0-11 also includes a handful of bespoke questions.
These questions are highlighted within the Item Construct Dictionary. Analysis will be undertaken at a later stage to further assess the
reliability and validity of the ChildrenCount Survey 0-11.
The survey is administered via computer tablet, so the visual presentation and flow of the questions will differ significantly.
Participants will be asked different questions based on their child’s age, and responses to previous questions. For example, some
questions will be asked of all parents (e.g. Is there someone that you can turn to for day-to-day emotional help with parenting). Other
questions will only be asked of parents whose children are less than two years (e.g. Does your baby stiffen and arch her back when
picked up?). While other questions will be asked of parents of school-aged children (e.g. I (or other caregivers) help my child with their
homework when asked). The relevant age ranges are highlighted in the left hand column of each table.
This contains all possible questions that could be asked of parents participating in the ChildrenCount Survey 0-11. There are two
exceptions:
1. Communication development measured via the Ages and Stages Questionnaire-3 (ASQ-3). It is a screening tool intended to detect
whether children are meeting expected developmental milestones for their age. There are 21 versions that could be asked depending
on the child’s age. The questionnaire administered with parents of children aged 24 months is provided as an example.
2. Social and emotional development measured via the Ages and Stages Questionnaire - Social and Emotional Development
(ASQ:SE). It is a reliable screening tool focused on the social and emotional development in young children. There are 9 versions of
the ASQ:SE that could be asked depending on the child’s age. The questionnaire administered with parents of children aged 36
months is provided as an example.
