Using a colon for a Eist
A colon can be used within a sentence to alert the reader that a list of
items will follow. A colon creates a bit of suspense...an expectation that
something will follow.
Rule: When a colon is used before a list, it is necessary to include
a "summary" word or words before the colon.
Examples of summary words:
following, includes these items, several, many, numerous,
a number word (five) and a plural {wun (products),
or words describing the subject of the list (books, ingredients, etc.)
Correct:
If you are planning to participate in the Race for the Cure, you
should do the following: sign up, get sponsors! and arrive 15
minutes early,
Incorrect:
If you are planning to participate you should: sign up, get
sponsors, and arrive 15 minutes early. (no summary words
were used before the colon).
