Your vacation address, 1619 9th Avenue, is smack in the middle of downtown Seattle, one of the most beautiful cities in the U.S. Despite its being known for rain, between the months of July and September, Seattle is one of the driest places in the country. During the other months, you'd be smart to carry a raincoat and a sweater, though you'll be surprised by how often you can go outside without them. Just two blocks west of this urban resort is the 6th and Pine shopping district, home of Pacific Place, where you'll find many upscale department and specialty stores. Restaurants line the upper floor along with an 11-screen movie theater. Across the street is the flagship Nordstrom, which started out in Seattle as a shoe store. The Space Needle, the city's signature icon, stands on the southwest corner of the Seattle Center. You can go to the top for sightseeing or enjoy a thrilling dining experience at the revolving SkyCity Restaurant. Other Seattle Center attractions include Key Arena, the Pacific Science Center, the Children's Theater, and McCaw Hall, the city's ballet and opera stage, as well as Microsoft millionaire Paul Allen's Experience Music Project and the Science Fiction Hall of Fame, both housed in the shimmering hightech Frank Gehry-designed building on the east side of the campus. The famous Pike Place Market runs between Pike Street and Virginia Street one block west of 1st Avenue. The market is known best of all for its fish-throwers, but the real traffic is at the day stalls for local artists and craftspeople. Across the street from the market is the unassuming original Starbucks coffee shop, in front of which you'll often find street performers. From this small storefront has sprung a caffeinated empire; the corporate headquarters are still located in Seattle. The Seattle Waterfront brims with activity: the car and pedestrian ferries to Bainbridge Island and Bremerton depart from here, a number of popular restaurants such as Ivar's Acres of Clams line up on piers over the water. Do not miss pier 59, home to the award winning Seattle Aquarium. To enjoy spectacular downtown views from Elliot Bay sign up for a sightseeing or dinner cruise provided by Argosy Cruises. Pioneer Square is Seattle's oldest neighborhood. To learn about the city's colorful early days, sign up for Bill Speidel's Underground Tour at Doc Maynard's Public House. You'll learn the origins of the term "skid row" and find out what useful purpose the decorative pergola serves. The observation deck at Smith Tower, now the littlest skyscraper in town, provides panoramic views that rival the Space Needle's—without the crowds. During the 1990s, Seattle gained two new sports stadiums: Century Link Field, home of the NFL-Seahawks and MLS-Sounders FC, and Safeco Field, the venue for the MLB-Mariners. ____________________________________________________________________ Driving Directions From SeaTac Int'l Airport: Take Hwy 518 to I-5 N into Seattle Take the Olive St exit (# 166) and merge right onto Olive St Take an immediate right on Melrose Ave Turn right on Pine St (go back over I-5) Turn right on 8th St Turn right on Olive Wy Turn right on 9th St, and The Camlin will be on your right <font face="arial> New Link-Light Rail from the Airport: Take the Link-Light rail from the airport to the Westlake Center Station Walk four blocks up Pine St to the resort From the North: Take I-5 S to Seattle Take exit 166, Stewart/Denny St On Stewart, drive 5 blocks and turn left onto 9th Ave The Camlin is 2 blocks ahead on the right From I-90 West: Take I-90 W to I-5 Nh exit--exit 2C--toward Madison St/Convention Center/Vancouver BC Follow directions in bold above
