Oakwood House is set in a leafy suburb on the edge of Ipswich, places in the home are
allocated via the local health services - no speculative enquiries are accepted. There are 24
single rooms, all ensuite. All pets would be considered, however there would have to be a
risk assessment with very large dogs. Pets are allowed to wander wherever they want in the
house and grounds. There is one elderly house cat. One resident sits for hours stroking
Sooty - much to Sooty's delight! Staff will assist with pet care, many are animal lovers. Dillon
the PAT dog is another welcome visitor. The garden and grounds are securely fenced and
available to pets. Our assessor was very impressed with this home and the manager’s
positive attitude towards pet ownership within the home. She considers it a key part of the
resident's care to help them fulfil any need they may have to own a pet.

The Firs is situated within a leafy suburb of Felixstowe. There are 40 single rooms. All pets
would be considered and staff would help with all aspects of pet care. In the past they
looked after a little Westie when her resident owner died and are now caring for Kit, a cat
belonging to a previous resident. There are also two budgies with their owners and three
house Guinea pigs. Not forgetting the daily visits from the handyman’s dog who likes to roam
and see who is going to make a fuss of him. All visiting pets are very welcome and the staff
regularly bring in theirs. The garden is fenced and available to pets.

Chantry House is situated within a rural environment and has 24 single ensuite rooms. Most
pets would be considered but the decision would be dependent on the care the pet needs
and the owner’s abilities. There are two Guinea pigs Ginger and Woolly and one cat
Dusty. All are house pets and all are available for cuddles! The garden is secure and
available to pets. A bright and warm home with friendly staff and a manager who is very
fond of pets.

Chilton Meadows is an extensive complex set in the countryside just outside the town of
Stowmarket. There are 120 single rooms which are all on ground level and are arranged in
four units over the site. At the moment there is one resident with finches in her room and
until just recently a resident had his Jack Russell called Alfie, who featured on the marketing
brochures at one point. Alfie has since died. There are numerous house pets which include
four cats and a parrot called Billy. The house cats have free run of the home and the
residents are encouraged to fuss them, the cats sit with residents and have a very calming
effect on them . All small pets are welcome and the staff will help with their care if needed.
There are extensive grounds with lovely gardens and numerous water features around
making it a very pleasant and relaxing environment to spend some time in. In these lovely
gardens you can find the two aviaries and the enclosure for the chipmunks, a few ducks can
be seen waddling around as well. One unit has a large decked area with a sunken fishpond
(railed off) to one side. This is a very impressive area and overlooks the rolling open
countryside, you can watch people walking their dogs from here or just take in the view and
the fresh air. Although dogs are required to be on a lead around the site, there are some
units which have secure gardens if required.

Monmouth Court is a purpose built home in a quiet suburban area of Ipswich. There are 153

a previous resident’s two cats. The large well tended grounds are open on to the road;
however Amber and Blackie (the cats) coped very well with this. The grounds are not secure
but there is a lovely park next door where dogs may be exercised off lead, staff would help

Anglesea Heights is situated in an urban but leafy suburb of Ipswich. It has four units, 30
beds in each, 90 for dementia and 30 for frail and elderly, none ensuite. Most small pets
would be considered and staff would do their best to assist with pet care as time allowed.
The only pet at the moment is next door’s cat who has more or less taken up residence,
even forgiving the home for taking him to the vet for an infected bite. The residents make a
great fuss of him – cats know when they are on to a good thing! Relatives’ pets are most
welcome and the activity co-ordinator arranges visits of exotic birds and reptiles, also a PAT
dog is a regular visitor. There are secure grounds around each unit and a large park just
next door.

Fiske Gardens is set in a leafy suburb, it has 24 rented flats all of which are self-contained.
All well behaved domestic pets would be welcome. This complex is currently home to a
budgie, two cats and four dogs. The manager, who by her own admission is not a great pet
lover knows all their names and would provide help in an emergency, calling The Cinnamon
Trust or family for on-going assistance with pet care. In the event of a pet passing away, it is
Hanover's policy to allow residents to have another pet. The gardens were described by our
assessor as very well maintained with beautiful lawns and flower beds. The gardens are
open plan and are available to pets, however dogs must be kept on a lead and exercised
away from the estate grounds.

Hanover Court is situated on the outskirts of Elmswell and within easy reach of Ipswich and
Bury St. Edmunds. There are 31 one bed flats; all ground floor properties have their own
enclosed courtyards. All small pets are welcome subject to Hanover’s policy. Currently
resident with their owners are four dogs, three cats, two ferrets, a canary and budgie. The
manager is willing to help out in an emergency and likes to get to know the pets on site, even
chatting to Louis (the budgie) over the intercom!. Dogs must be kept on leads within the
grounds. However, there is a gate in the corner of the garden which leads out onto a large
grassy field and good walks within a short distance. Pets are welcome to use the communal
common room as long as they are well behaved and dogs are on a lead. Our assessor was
happy that the manager would be supportive of any pet owner and would make sure their
needs were taken into consideration.

Nevilles Close was built in 1990 and it is situated in the middle of a residential area in the
heart of the historic town of Bury St Edmunds. There are 29 flats in all, 28 of which are one
bedroom with the other one having two, 14 are ground floor and 15 are first floor and all are
offered on a rental basis. The flats are arranged in three blocks, each block having it's own
paved areas with flower beds and patches of grass. It seemed a pleasant site which is well
maintained, clean and tidy. Any well behaved domestic pets are welcome subject to
Hanover's pet policy. There are no resident pets at the moment although a new tenant with
two cats is due to arrive in the near future. The Estate manager is a pet lover with a soft
spot for dogs. The Manager would be willing to help out in an emergency with pet care.
Dogs have to be kept on the lead on site at all times. There are no walks in the immediate
vicinity for off lead exercise. Our assessor noted that “The Manager has been here for 17
years and is committed to his residents”.

Camberley Court is a Hanover Housing Association complex which was built in 1989 and is
situated in the town of Bury St Edmunds. All the properties are rented. It is a well
maintained and well managed estate offering 20 one bed flats and one two bed, 10 are
ground level and 11 are on the first floor. The Estate Manager is responsible for this site
and another one which is within walking distance. Any domestic pets are accepted subject
to a "Pet Request" being completed and approved by Hanover. This is a retirement complex
and the residents are expected to take full responsibility for their own pets welfare, however
the manager would be willing to help out in an emergency or advise an alternative i.e. "The
Cinnamon Trust". There are three resident dogs at the moment and one elderly cat. Dogs
have to be kept on a lead around the complex and other residents have to be taken into

Pollard Court is a complex of flats set within a leafy urban housing estate. There are 28 flats
available, all rented. Any pet would be welcomed as long as the owner is fully able to meet
all its care needs. As an establishment that promotes independent living, this is in line with
Hanover's pet policy. The estate manager and fellow residents are very warm to those
animals who live at the complex, currently a dog, three cats and two birds. The animals are
very welcome to walk around the complex but all dogs must be on leads and must not foul
the area. The manager knows all the pets and would assist with pet care in an emergency,
as would some of the other residents. She would also not have a problem with a resident
having another pet and would allow a beloved pet to be buried in the estate grounds. Our
assessor commented that the manager is warm towards people keeping their pets and
understands why people would want to do that.

Mais Court is a complex of 17 rented flats set within a large urban area. As an
establishment that promotes independent living, the people that live there can have whatever
animals they choose, as long as it is suitable for their dwelling and they are fully able to look
after it. Currently the residents have a mix of cats and dogs , two of which are called Gismo,
who all seem to get along very well together. It is quite a close community and while there is
no official help from the Estate Manager, she is happy to help out in a crisis, and everyone is
very neighbourly towards each other. Residents are able to walk their dogs around the
complex but there are no communal grounds where they can run free. Residents would be
able to have another pet if they wish and they would be able to bury a deceased pet in the
grounds. Our assessor noted that the estate manager had a warm attitude towards people
keeping their animal with them or buying a new pet.

to pets but are not securely fenced. Dogs may be walked on a lead within the grounds but
must be exercised off lead away from the estate gardens as per Hanover's pet policy. Pets
are very welcome in the communal areas as long as they are well behaved. The manager
would be happy to cover pet care in an emergency and is very aware of The Cinnamon Trust

assessor commented that the manager was very pet friendly and would ensure that pets
were safe and cared for in an emergency.

Hanover Close - Tollgate Lane, is a retirement complex located in a residential area of Bury
St. Edmunds. There are 30 flats within several 2 storey blocks, each with their own drying
area. The grounds are well maintained and there are plenty of grassy areas but no secure
place to exercise dogs safely. Dogs would have to be kept on a lead, as the site is bordered
on two sides by busy roads. Any pets are welcome subject to the company policy. At
present there are 3 dogs, 2 cats and a budgie living with their owners. Our assessor met
one of the dogs , a Jack Russell called “Bessie” and her owner, Bessie was very friendly and
posed to have her photograph taken quite happily; after she had been given a treat to seal
the deal. Although there is not a communal room as such the residents have a “Summer
House” in the grounds which they use for various social events throughout the year. These
are arranged between themselves. The "Summer House" is quite large and comfortable
even in the cold weather, as there are heaters installed - Christmas Dinner is the next event.
Dogs would be welcome in the “Summer House” on a lead. The manager is very friendly
and likes to get to know the pets and makes a fuss of them when she does her rounds. She
would help out with pet care in an emergency if there were no family involved or would refer
to a specialist organisation e.g. the Cinnamon Trust. Our assessor described Hanover Close
as “A pleasant haven in a busy part of town”

Hanover Court, Sudbury is a complex of 32 rented retirement flats in the beautiful town of
Sudbury. It is set in lovely communal grounds with a large pond. Animals are welcome in
the communal grounds and indoor areas although dogs need to be kept on a lead and the
grounds are not secure. Any animal is welcomed at Hanover Court, as long as the resident
can take full responsibility for its care and the dwelling is of a suitable size to contain it.
Currently there are 8 dogs, 2 birds and one cat living with their owners. None of the
dwellings have their own outside space. The estate manager knows all the pets well and will
help out in an emergency as will other residents who frequently walk each others dogs if
someone is going out. Our assessor felt that this estate was in a nice setting and whilst the
management are open to residents having pets, they would not expect to get involved in any
aspects of the pets care.

Pentlow Hawke Close is a small complex of 36 rented retirement flats, set within a larger
housing estate. Whilst it doesn't have large grounds it is surrounded by lots of paths and
walks so that it is possible to exercise a dog and walk into the town without seeing a car.
Our assessor was fortunate enough to meet a famous dog here when she visited. Betty was
Pauline Fowler's dog in East Enders and was the last in a line of Cairn Terriers to play the
role until Pauline left the series. Now Betty lives happily with her owner at Pentlow Hawke
Close. Our assessor also met Pip, the German Shepherd. Also in residence is a cat and a
dog, Benji. Staff at Pentlow Hawke Close are very positive about the benefits of residents
keeping their animals with them but due to the nature of the housing, the residents do need
to be able to look after their animals without any support. Despite this, the estate manager
would not see an animal in difficulty and has previously looked after a residents dog in an
emergency. Dogs are allowed to use the communal grounds but like all Hanover properties,
it is expected that dogs are kept on a lead and exercised away from the site. Our assessor
felt that the estate manager was very keen for residents to have a pet and despite not being
a great animal lover herself, does her best to be accommodating.

Priory Paddocks is privately owned and set in a very rural location, in beautiful grounds that
open out into fields. There are 28 single and six shared rooms, most are ensuite. They are
very pet-friendly, although currently only housing one cat, Binky. Binky is about 18 years,
who originally arrived with her owner. When her owner died Binky was allowed to stay in her
room and was happily adopted by the next resident to live in that room. The Home has taken
on all responsibility for Binky's care. They also have four chickens who roam around the
back garden and not forgetting Harry, the owners giant Schnauzer who comes to work every
day. They are happy for a resident to bring any well behaved domestic pet. The staff at
Priory Paddocks expect to be responsible for the overall care of any animal that comes to
live in the home as they recognise the benefits that animals can bring to residents, especially
those suffering from dementia. Pets are able to wander around the home and grounds and
staff are happy to keep an eye on animals outside. There is no secure area for dogs to walk
but as the extensive grounds are surrounded by fields there is no real danger. A very pet
friendly and welcoming home. Winner of the PFCH 2001 Award. Highly commended for
PFCH Award in 1999.

Allonsfield and Ashfield is on the edge of a village in a delightful rural setting. All pets are
welcome and the manager will go and meet the pet in its own home and then there will be a
gradual introduction to the home to make sure it is happy and that it can cope with the
change in environment. They are very pet-friendly and two residents have their own pets;
Bridie a dog and Molly a cat. There are also house pets, two hamsters and a rabbit. The
manager is very aware about the positive effect of pets and other animals on the well-being
of dementia clients. Any pet is included in the resident's care plan and there is a large
importance placed on the animal’s welfare, with schedules drawn up to ensure the correct
level of care for each animal. The animals are welcome all around the home and grounds
and there are safe areas where a dog could explore off the lead. Visiting pets are very
welcome, staff bring their pets in and the local PAT dog is always a welcome visitor.

Westhorpe Hall is set in a secluded spot a short distance from the road which leads into the
village of Westhorpe. To get to the home you go over a bridge which takes you over a moat
which is on three sides of the home. It is a very pretty setting with ducks waddling around
the car park as they please. The home has 20 rooms, 10 ensuite. All pets are welcome here
and the manager and staff are willing to help with any pet care. They do not have any
residents pets at the moment although several dogs have made Westhorpe their home
during the last three years, but they do have a house cat called "Henry" who our assessor
met upstairs on one of the beds having a snooze. The gardens are delightful and there is a
large secure area for exercising dogs off lead although a small dog could possibly get under
the gates if they were determined to escape.

Northfield Court is a new purpose built retirement housing complex of 24 properties, all
privately owned and many with their own courtyard garden. The complex is well maintained
and is conveniently situated within walking distance of the shops and the sea. The residents
are allowed to have any pet, as long as it is kept within their property and private garden.
There are communal gardens which pets are welcome to use but dogs must be on a lead
and are not allowed to foul within the grounds. Currently there is one dog in residence,
Victoria, she is an ex-hearing dog and everyone seems very fond of her. There is also the
managers' dog, Eddie, who lives on site. Residents' visitors often bring dogs along with
them and this is welcomed, as long as they behave. Due to the nature of the establishment
it is company policy not to take any responsibility for the animals, however, in an emergency
the managers will step in to assist in the short-term. When a resident buys a property here
they are expected to give details of people to contact in an emergency, and this includes for
pet care. Our assessor noted that “Aldeburgh is a very attractive place with a lot going on”.
Please note:
The Cinnamon Trust is pleased to be able to refer you to residential accommodation that will accept pets with
prior arrangement. However, this is NOT to be taken as a recommendation and you should make your own
enquiries and inspections, perhaps with the help of a relative, friend or one of our volunteers to ensure that the
standards of care and facilities offered are suitable for you
