The animals are very welcome to walk around the complex but all dogs must be on leads and must not foul the area. The manager knows all the pets and would assist with pet care in an emergency, as would some of the other residents. She would also not have a problem with a resident having another pet and would allow a beloved pet to be buried in the estate grounds. There are 30 flats within several 2 storey blocks, each with their own drying area. The grounds are well maintained and there are plenty of grassy areas but no secure place to exercise dogs safely. Dogs would have to be kept on a lead, as the site is bordered on two sides by busy roads. Any pets are welcome subject to the company policy. At present there are 3 dogs, 2 cats and a budgie living with their owners. Our assessor met one of the dogs , a Jack Russell called “Bessie” and her owner, Bessie was very friendly and posed to have her photograph taken quite happily; after she had been given a treat to seal the deal. Although there is not a communal room as such the residents have a “Summer House” in the grounds which they use for various social events throughout the year. These are arranged between themselves. The "Summer House" is quite large and comfortable even in the cold weather, as there are heaters installed - Christmas Dinner is the next event. Dogs would be welcome in the “Summer House” on a lead. The manager is very friendly and likes to get to know the pets and makes a fuss of them when she does her rounds. She would help out with pet care in an emergency if there were no family involved or would refer to a specialist organisation e.g. the Cinnamon Trust. Any animal is welcomed at Hanover Court, as long as the resident can take full responsibility for its care and the dwelling is of a suitable size to contain it. Currently there are 8 dogs, 2 birds and one cat living with their owners. None of the dwellings have their own outside space. The estate manager knows all the pets well and will help out in an emergency as will other residents who frequently walk each others dogs if someone is going out. Our assessor felt that this estate was in a nice setting and whilst the management are open to residents having pets, they would not expect to get involved in any aspects of the pets care. Whilst it doesn't have large grounds it is surrounded by lots of paths and walks so that it is possible to exercise a dog and walk into the town without seeing a car. Our assessor was fortunate enough to meet a famous dog here when she visited. Betty was Pauline Fowler's dog in East Enders and was the last in a line of Cairn Terriers to play the role until Pauline left the series. Now Betty lives happily with her owner at Pentlow Hawke Close. Our assessor also met Pip, the German Shepherd. Also in residence is a cat and a dog, Benji. Staff at Pentlow Hawke Close are very positive about the benefits of residents keeping their animals with them but due to the nature of the housing, the residents do need to be able to look after their animals without any support. Despite this, the estate manager would not see an animal in difficulty and has previously looked after a residents dog in an emergency. Dogs are allowed to use the communal grounds but like all Hanover properties, it is expected that dogs are kept on a lead and exercised away from the site. Our assessor felt that the estate manager was very keen for residents to have a pet and despite not being a great animal lover herself, does her best to be accommodating. The complex is well maintained and is conveniently situated within walking distance of the shops and the sea. The residents are allowed to have any pet, as long as it is kept within their property and private garden. There are communal gardens which pets are welcome to use but dogs must be on a lead and are not allowed to foul within the grounds. Currently there is one dog in residence, Victoria, she is an ex-hearing dog and everyone seems very fond of her. There is also the managers' dog, Eddie, who lives on site. Residents' visitors often bring dogs along with them and this is welcomed, as long as they behave. Due to the nature of the establishment it is company policy not to take any responsibility for the animals, however, in an emergency the managers will step in to assist in the short-term. When a resident buys a property here they are expected to give details of people to contact in an emergency, and this includes for pet care. Our assessor noted that “Aldeburgh is a very attractive place with a lot going on”. Please note: The Cinnamon Trust is pleased to be able to refer you to residential accommodation that will accept pets with prior arrangement. However, this is NOT to be taken as a recommendation and you should make your own enquiries and inspections, perhaps with the help of a relative, friend or one of our volunteers to ensure that the standards of care and facilities offered are suitable for you Page: 18
