Summer Reading List 2017 For Rising 5th Graders Rising 5th Graders 5 x 8 inch index cards are required and may be purchased at most office supply stores. Students will read two books from the list below. Each student is required to read **The Trumpet of the Swan by E. B. White, which will be discussed during the first week of school. The student will then choose a book from the 5th grade list for the second book. Each student will complete a summer reading card for both books read. Instructions for completing the cards are detailed below. All cards will be collected the first day of school. The cards will be graded on the following criteria: neatness, (print or cursive), following directions, and completeness of specified information. Basic Information: The student will provide his/her name, grade, title of book, author, number of pages, genre or type of book read (i.e. fiction, non-fiction, biography,. . . ) parent(s) signature verifying that the book was read at the time of the report. Plot Summary: This information will be written in narrative form using complete sentences. The student will summarize the basic plot of the book. Generally, this information will take approximately 3 - 6 sentences. Setting: The student will provide the time and place of the book. It need not be exact, but should establish a time period and geographic location if the author is not specific. Main Characters: The student will identify both the protagonist, otherwise known as the leading character, and the antagonist (if one is obvious) which is the adversary or opponent, as well as any other main characters. Theme: The students will provide the central idea(s) which gives the book meaning. In other words, how do the characters and plot focus on some truth(s) that should be learned? Main Conflict/Resolution: The student will provide the main conflict(s) in the book. A conflict is the problem to be solved, or the idea, force or person that creates opposition in the plot. Provide both the conflict and how it is resolved. Summer Reading Report Instructions The student will complete this report on a 5x8 index card. In some cases, a student may need to use more than one index card. Reports done on notebook paper will not be accepted, even if the notebook paper is cut to the right size. The example below shows all of the information using both sides of one 5x8 index card.
