$255,736 to offset
the law school’s
operating budget. The entire Widener
Law community is deeply grateful for
your support.
With the start of our new fiscal year on
July 1, 2004, the Development team set
three new objectives:
■ to reach our new annual fund
goal of $252,000
■ to achieve alumni pledges
of $60,000 through our student
phonathon program
■ to increase the participation
of alumni in our annual fund
campaign
This year, a new initiative is planned to
promote the importance of alumni
participation through a campaign called
the Alumni Challenge for Excellence.
There are several reasons why this
initiative is so important:
■ Corporate donors, foundations,
prospective students, parents,
faculty and the media focus on
the percentage of alumni who
give annually as a reliable means
of measuring Widener Law
School’s credibility and well-being.
■ Widener Law School’s Alumni
participation rate of 13% lags
behind those of other regional
law schools.
■ Law School alumni participation
rates are reported to and
published by the American
Association of Law Schools,
Section on Institutional
Advancement.

Those of us who
remember the earliest
days of the Law
School recall the
moment when
Dean Alfred Avins
contacted us with
our acceptance to
Delaware Law
Dean Avins
School. It was a
pivotal time in our lives and careers.
Without Dean Avins’ vision, persistence
and the opportunities he created, we
would not be fulfilling our dreams
today. The Avins Campaign now seeks
to name the library of Special
Collections, a treasure of rare and
unique books within the Legal
Information Center, in his honor. Now
is the time to recognize Alfred Avins’
“remarkable achievement” as it was so
eloquently stated by Judge Edward R.
Becker, U.S. District Court for the
Eastern District of Pennsylvania on July
29, 1976:

First and foremost, were it not
for Alfred Avins, who came to
Delaware as a sojourner in aid
of a political campaign, many
hundreds of young men and
women (and many thousands in
the years to come) would not have
had the opportunity that they
now will have, because of him, to
practice law… Second, unlike those
who might have started a law
school with the aid of considerable
financial resources, or an existing
educational establishment, Avins
started one from nothing, out of
nowhere as it were. By application
of enormous resourcefulness,
remarkable energy and perseverance and considerable intelligence,
by acting as the proverbial
‘chief cook and bottle washer’ and
partaking of virtually augean
labors, Avins single handedly built
a physical plant and a library,
recruited faculty and attracted a
student body… It was a remarkable achievement.”

2005, the fifth anniversary of Dean
