WritingaGCSEEnglishLiteratureessay
Writing an English Literature essay is not always easy. It is vitally important that you know the text you are
analysing in depth; yet you gain marks in the exam by writing an essay in the appropriate style and showing the
examiner that you can answer the question set for you. There are certain rules that you need to follow in order
to optimise your chances of gaining a high grade.
1) Read the questions very carefully. In the exam you will be given a choice of essay questions, it is vital
that you choose the question that suits you best.
2) Identify the key words in the question; are you being asked to write about a character, an event or a
particular theme. The wording of a question is very important, are you being asked to ANALYSE,
EXPLORE, COMPARE, DISCUSS, IMAGINE or EXPLAIN? You will not gain any marks for re-telling the
story– make sure you do what you are being asked to do!
3) MAKE AN ESSAY PLAN. When you see the title and start to think about it, you should jot down any
ideas that come into your head. Your essay plan could be a brainstorm, six or seven numbered
sentences or a list of points to include in each paragraph. The planning of an essay helps you to organise
your thoughts and will stop you slipping into a narrative style essay.
4) The first sentences are you essay are important. Try to immediately summarise your response to the
question so that the examiner has an idea about how you are going to approach the essay. Take care not
to begin your essay with a summary of the text.
5) Your paragraphs should follow in a logical order (your brief essay plan will help here). Each paragraph
should contain a relevant point, with appropriate example (quotation) and an explanation of your
quotation. Every paragraph must have the same structure.
6) It is important that you contain a substantial number of paragraphs in your essay to allow for a detailed
answer to the question to form. Aim for 6 or 7 paragraph (excluding your introduction and conclusion).
7) Draw your essay to a definite and succinct conclusion. Sum up what you have written and prove that you
have answered the question.
8) After writing an essay read it through for errors and mistakes with facts, details, punctuation or
spelling. When you read a paragraph you should always think to yourself
a) What was the point I was making in this paragraph?
b) Did I give my example (quotations) to prove my point?
c) Did I explain how my quotation supported my point?
If you do not have these elements in EACH paragraph you could be
jeopardising reaching the highest grade at GCSE level.
The key to writing a successful English Literature essay is planning. You should plan as many essays as possible,
actually write some introductions and conclusions and practise analysing quotations from the text.

EFFECTIVEREVISIONSTRATEGIES
How to maximise the learning from revision
What to study when.....
Making a plan takes time but it’s a very important part of revision
Plan to work in small ‘chunks’ of time (15 min, 5 min, 20 min, 5 min, 15 min) Plan which subjects and which topics you will study on which days
Build in definite breaks – and when they finish
Don’t try to cover too much, too fast – be realistic, small chunks are best
Keep half and whole days when you don’t revise – so they are available for emergencies
Don’t forget to include the dates of exams on your plan
Remember to build in time to revisit each subject briefly after a day and a week as well as just before the exam
http://www.bbc.co.uk/schools/studentlife/revisionandskills/
Struggling to get started?
Divide the number of hours available by the number of subjects you are taking and then allocate topics within each subject area.
Where to begin......
1. Be organised;
What resources, equipment will you need to revise.
2. Where are you going to work....
Is in front of the window / computer really a good idea?
3. Am I away from easy distractions?
e.g. Turn off your mobile phone Don’t have Facebook open
Use checking these as “treats” in your allotted breaks
To maximise learning from a revision session....
Stuck in your room.....what can you do?
1. Break information up
•
•
•
Scan the information and highlight the headings/subheadings
Under one heading, scan the passage and highlight the keywords
Only once you have done this tackle reading the whole passage
2. Summarise the material under headings on index cards / revision cards
3. Make a conscious effort to commit the information to memory
.......do this at least three times
4. Testyourself
Use the material to answer a question or address a problem not previously tackled.
Extra hints;
Don’t waste time struggling. Note down anything you can’t do and take it to your next lesson. Similarly if there are just one or two things that you
just can’t get then leave them out (unless you’re aiming for an A*).
And what can you do to help as a parent?
Share the strategies above with your child
Encourage your child to keep to the revision plan but be flexible to a degree
Provide a quiet uncluttered area for study away from distractions e.g. siblings, chatter etc
Ensure that they have everything they need – equipment, revision cards, revision guides etc (remove any excuses)
Make sure they take their allotted break and don’t over do it
Make sure they still take exercise and eat well
