malhar ragas are inspired by the
dark clouds and torrential downpour
of the monsoon. Different malhar
ragas are associated with various
stages of the monsoon such as
Mian ki Malhar with continuous
rainfall and Surdasi Malhar for
the end of the season. Legend has it
that Tansen, one of the Navratnas,
or nine gems, of Mughal king Akbar’s
court, could make it rain when he
sang the Megh Malhar, a monsoon
raga of Hindustani music, just as he
could light lamps with his rendition of
the Deepak raga. His close friend and
musician poet-saint Surdas is credited
with creating Sur Malhar, another
monsoon raga, while his father,
Ramdas, composed the Ramdasi
Malhar. Even if you haven’t heard
the originals, you would have heard
Bollywood hits inspired by these
raagas, such as Ghanan ghanan from

The word monsoon is believed to be derived
from the Arabic word "mausim", meaning
season. The southwest monsoon, which
covers a period of four months from June to
September, is when India gets over 70% of its
rainfall. It’s welcomed not just as a respite
from the scorching summer but also because
much of India’s economy depends on a good
monsoon. ET Magazine gives you this year’s
monsoon calendar, the path it usually takes
and a glimpse into the culture it has inspired:
