Annual Report 2012/2013
SUPERINTENDENTS’ MESSAGES
Dr. Jan Irons Harris
At this time, I want to thank the wonderful people of Cullman
for their support during my 8-½ year tenure as superintendent
of Cullman City Schools. I am satisfied and proud of the
important work we produced TOGETHER. Our success would
not have been possible without your support. Particular
highlights from our shared journey since 2005 include raising
student achievement from 11th to 2nd in Alabama, being one
of 14 school districts to have a three-month financial reserve,
and being the first in AL to implement a 1:1 Laptop Initiative.
Additionally, 25,500 hours of volunteer service have been donated to the community by our
students through the Community Service Seal program, all five schools and central office earned
Chamber Beautification awards, a Bible Literacy Class was created at CHS, the Arts were
restored at all schools, an Army JROTC program was started in partnership with Cullman County
Schools, the Gifted Program was increased, the A+ College Ready AP Initiative began this year, a
system-wide Character Education Plan was developed, we created the What Did You Read Last
Night Reading Campaign and Inkling Character Quote Contest, hosted an Aspiring Administrator
Academy and Presidents Club, and completed Branding for CCS. Seven national awards and
eight state awards came to our deserving schools and system since 2005.
I am thankful God gave me the opportunity to work as a math teacher, high school assistant
principal, middle school principal, high school principal, and superintendent for 30 years and
4 months. I am thankful Wholey and I had the opportunity to come to Cullman, the City of
Character. I enjoyed my time with you very much.
I leave our schools with exemplary principals, dedicated master teachers and support staff.
I leave the business of the Board with the most capable central office leadership team. I take
with me treasured memories of my time spent in Cullman with outstanding board members,
administrators, faculty, staff, students, parents and community members.
Thank you for giving me the opportunity to serve as your superintendent. And, thank you for
your many acts of kindness. It has been the pinnacle of my career to serve as your
superintendent. I offer my best wishes to Cullman’s new superintendent, Dr. Doreen Griffeth.
It is my sincere hope that she will enjoy serving as much as I did. May God continue to bless
Cullman City Schools and the City of Cullman.
With warmest regards,
On behalf of the Board of Education, it is my pleasure to welcome Dr. Doreen Griffeth as the next
superintendent of Cullman City Schools. With the assistance of the Alabama School Boards
Association, the Board conducted a national search for the next visionary leader of our system.
All five of the finalists were outstanding and each one would have served our system well. The
Board’s selection of Dr. Griffeth was based on her leadership experience in a top school system,
knowledge and understanding of our system, and her “fit” within our community. Dr. Griffeth
brings over 25 years’ experience in the Cobb County School System as a music, special education,
and classroom teacher, as well as leadership roles as an assistant principal, principal and an area
superintendent. Over the last eight years, Cullman City Schools has been blessed to have Dr. Jan
Harris as our superintendent, and without her leadership our system would not have excelled to
be one of the top systems in our state. There is no doubt, upon the retirement of Dr. Harris, that
the individual selected to lead our school system for the
coming years has big shoes to fill and we believe that Dr.
Griffeth is the best choice to begin a new journey in those
shoes. We wish the best to Dr. Harris as she begins a new
phase of her career and look forward to the newest member
of the Cullman Bearcat family, Dr. Griffeth.
Suzanne Harbin, President
Cullman City Board of Education
Board of Education
Dr. Doreen Griffeth chosen
as new CCS Superintendent
What an exciting time to be joining the
Cullman City School District! It is an
honor to have the opportunity to join
with your School Board, building our
Team of 6, in leading this system
forward. You have a history of great
leadership and achievement, with Dr.
Jan Harris leading the way. I hope to
build on the firm foundation for
excellence that she has established and
bring this district to even greater
success. Your principals and teachers
are professionals who lead with their
heart and expertise. This district is in
great educational hands.
Becoming a part of this educational
community will be a pleasure. You are
warm and welcoming and focused on
providing the best education possible
for your students. I look forward to
being this district’s most vocal
promoter and supporter as I represent
you across this state. In closing, I want
you to know that I love learning! My
best days are spent in schools with
students. I have the passion to increase
engagement for students and to make
