Providence Care Centre
Delivering the Right Level of Care
We all strive to hold on to our independence for as long as we can but there
often comes a time when living in our own home is no longer an appropriate
or safe option due to changes in abilities. When we need to move a senior
into care, it often fosters insecurities and we see changes in behavior as it is
disorienting and becomes more difficult for the senior to master their unfamiliar surrounds.
Providence Care Centre (PCC) will be the new standard in offering residents
options that will not necessitate a move from where they live. Residents
will be able to receive the services they require with health and personal
care supports available 24 hours a day, with the privacy they want and as
much independence as their abilities will allow.
PCC will offer Supportive Living Level 4 Care through to Long Term Care
without having to move the resident to another facility. Residents requiring
the services of Supportive Living will have complex medical and/or physical
needs that are predictable and safely managed with onsite, professional nursing care. Residents needing help to manage a chronic disease, living with mild
to moderate dementia or requiring assistance with daily living activities from
assistance with eating, mobility or incontinence, will benefit from Supportive
Living.
As health needs become more highly complex and unpredictable, residents
will require the services offered through long-term care. This diversity of
options for the level of care required aligns us with Alberta Health Services,
“providing the right care in the right place for you”.
The project design stage is nearing completion with an expectation that the
project will move to the tender stage by the latter part of November. Providence Care Centre is a reality, providing the right level of care for those
who will benefit from the compassionate and dignified care that have become
the hallmark of Father Lacombe Care Centre for the past 100 years.

7th Annual Outdoor Mass — Bishop Henry Presiding
The 7th Annual Father Lacombe Care Centre’s Outdoor Mass was held on
Grandparents Day, Sunday September 9th and started out a little cool but
ended up a beautiful sunny fall day.
Approximately 300 people came together on the scenic grounds of the Father Lacombe Care Centre to fill the garden tent and celebrate the Mass
with Bishop Frederick Henry, Deacon Vivian Pinto and Father Andrew
Maruszczak from St. Patrick’s. The beautiful music for the service was provided by the members of the St. Patrick’s Parish youth choir and led by volunteer Dawn Fox.
A BBQ lunch followed the service. It was cooked and served by the
Knights of Columbus Council 4878. Tours of the grounds and the
original 100 year old home of the Sisters of Providence were available. Several displays were set up depicting the history of the Sisters,
the new Providence Care Centre and information on the volunteer
program and ways to get engaged with FLCC.
The Outdoor Mass is an annual community event that is enjoyed by
the residents and their families, staff members, board members, and
members of the surrounding communities. The key to the success of
the event is the help of many of our dedicated volunteers and staff
and we thank them heartily for their time and efforts.

Accreditation: Doing the right things right
If you look up the dictionary, accreditation means to “officially recognize a person or organization as having met
a standard or criterion”. That is what the staff at Father Lacombe Care Centre will be striving to achieve this
February, but there is a lot of work to be done before that time.
We will be seeking to renew our accreditation by Accreditation Canada which sets national standards that examine all aspects of health care from patient safety and ethics to staff training and partnering with the community. Successful accreditation will mean we have been assessed by our peers, we have met or exceeded national
standards of excellence and we continue to strive for high-quality health care. We pride ourselves on delivering
the best quality of care we can within the financial constraints of the funding model. Accreditation helps us
quantify and qualify the level of care we provide for the evolving needs of our residents.
Accreditation continues to evolve and change. This year, the focus is more on engagement of front line staff.
We want to ensure that the staff are feeling supported to deliver the best possible care for the residents. It is
important to have a healthy work force.

The Sisters of Charity of Providence
Holy Angels Province (1912—2012)
100th Anniversary
Holy Angels Province is the name of the Western
Canadian region of the Sisters of Providence.
Formed on August 8, 1912, the headquarters for
the Holy Angels Province has moved from Vancouver to Midnapore and is now located in Edmonton,
Alberta.
This province has carried the name “Holy Angels”
since the moment of its foundation in 1912 but the
origin of the name is not known. The Sacred Scriptures speak often of the angels who accompany and
protect persons and communities and who communicate God’s messages to them. There is no doubt
that the Sisters of Providence who left Montreal,
Quebec, to found missions in the Canadian West
were accompanied and had divine protection for
the duration of the their journey.
need: education, child care, care of the elderly and
the homeless, health care and care in the home.
The Sisters of Providence in the 21st Century continue to be inspired, shaped, focused, and energized
by their understanding of the original call: to care
for the poor, the rejected persons of society, and
those with unmet needs. The Sisters provide for
the needs of the marginalized and vulnerable by
working together with existing social, education and
healthcare organizations. The emphasis today is on
leadership to promote justice through effective social change and providing direct service to the
needy.
The Sisters of Providence first came to Western
Canada in 1886 and established the first mission of
the Sisters of Providence in the Canadian West; St.
Mary’s Hospital in New Westminster, B. C. From
there, they were called to serve at many other locations in BC, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba and
the Yukon. Again, they were called on for every

Sister Margarete St John, SP
Sr. Margarete was born on ‘the Island” - PEI, the home of Anne of Green Gables, sandy
beaches and red soil. She comes from a large family of brothers and sister with a long history of generations of priests, but Sr. Margarete is the very first religious Sister. She is grateful to have been called to serve in this way and is inspired by Mother Emilie who believed in;
“Compassion, consolation, and love for the suffering and the aged”.
Sr. Margarete has spent time working on missions in Canada, the United States and the Philippines where she worked in a variety of supportive and caring roles.
A well kept secret about Sr. Margarete is that she participated in the Canada Winter Games. Her first experience was as a competitor in the sport of Figure Skating in the disciplines of Dance and Freestyles and her second experience was as the Team Manager for the Women’s Fencing Team.

nominated by Les Kiss from the Foundation Board

dignity and choice for the seniors in our care. We
will continue this legacy of care through the construction of the new Providence Care Centre.

furnishings in the main lobby of the new Centre.
These furnishings will help to offer a warm and inviting home-like setting for the residents and their

split these votes as they choose. At noon on October 21st, the 5 organizations in each category with the most votes will be the winners.
Thanks for helping us help the seniors in our community who have helped to
shape the Calgary landscape.
Getting Your Flu Shot
Vaccinations are never
much fun, but when you are
caring for individuals with
compromised immune systems, the annual influenza
shot is a necessity.
The vaccination campaign is
spearheaded and organized by Jean Clark R.N, our
Education Coordinator. It involves a flu shot and
anti-infection education to address proper respiratory protocols and proper hand washing techniques.
Keeping our hands clean by coughing and sneezing
into a sleeve or handkerchief and thoroughly washing our hands are the most important prevention
methods.
This years campaign will once again offering on site
influenza shots for all residents, staff, volunteers and
family members. The goals this year is to ensure
that 95% of our target audience receive their vaccination. We are striving to create an environment
where everyone remains as healthy as possible and
the spread of the virus is minimized.
The vaccination program will commence the first
week of October for residents. There will be an
evening clinic at FLCC offered for families in mid
October.
The three vaccine strains that are included in the
2012/13 influenza vaccine for the Northern Hemisphere are an A/California/, an A/Victoria, and a B/
Wisconsin. By receiving the vaccine, you are not at
risk of getting the flu as there is no live viruses contained in the vaccine.

Boundless Energy
Youth bring a very special energy and enthusiasm to
Father Lacombe Care Centre. This summer, we
were fortunate to recruit three summer students
under the Career’s Next Generation Program. This
program is for high school students in grade 11 who
have an interest in learning and gaining experience
within a health care setting.
We are proud of our eight years of participating in
the summer program. Many of the students, who
have worked their summers here, have gone on to a
long association with us by continuing to volunteer.
With Canada such a vast country, many students have
limited interactions with their grandparents. Spending
time, taking residents on outings and having quality interactions builds a deeper understanding and appreciation for those who helped to shape our community. In
turn, the seniors truly enjoy having a young person to
share their stories with because they take such a keen
interest.
This is truly a win/win program for everyone.
Care Giver Support Info
The responsibility of caring for an older
adult can be rewarding, but it can also be
exhausting worrisome and isolating.
It is a well know fact that our population is aging at an
ever increasing rate. Alberta’s senior population is
increasing by approximately 1,000 every month. This
is putting pressure on every sector of our Health
Care System and many families who are now caring
for an older family member.
Father Lacombe Care Centre hosts Caregiver Support Meetings that are open to the family members of
our residents and Adult Day Support Program as well
as members of the Calgary community. These meetings are facilitated by a Social Worker and are designed to offer caring , support, and empathy to the
participants and facilitate information sharing and
companionship. This is an ongoing open ended program and individuals can attend for a time period that
is suited to their own personal needs.
Some of the topics that are addressed in these meetings are practical subjects such as the nutritional needs
of older adults, how to access community resources,
and general health issues of the older adult. Other
more wide ranging subjects also include strategies to
cope with memory loss, understanding Dementia, coping with stress, and other topics relate to care giving.
