The Red Wagon It was the day after Christmas at St. Peter and St. Paul's church in Borden, Kent, England. Father John, the vicar, was looking at the nativity scene outside when he noticed the baby Jesus was missing from the figures. Immediately, Father John's thoughts turned to calling in the local policeman but as he was about to do so, he saw little Nathan with a red wagon, and in the wagon was the figure of the little infant, Jesus. Father John approached Nathan and asked him, 'Well, Nathan, where did you get the little infant?' Nathan looked up, smiled and replied, 'I took him from the church.' 'And why did you take him?' Christmas lasts not one day, nor 12 days, nor is it a season. Christmas is, and must be, inside of us and in our souls - an abiding presence, a light, a hope, a promise. As Christians, the joy of Christ’s birth sustains us throughout the year. Christian life comes through the Nativity - wonder, calm, belief, humility, charity, love. These endure as paving stones for our journey in Christ. Bethlehem inspires us to slow down, look up, and stay grounded in our Lord’s peace. Above all, Christmas leads us to gratitude, and gratitude makes us happy, healthy and whole. We need Christmas to continue, not just 12 days, but to endure all 365 days of the year. With a sheepish grin, Nathan said, 'Well, Father John, about a week before Christmas I prayed to Lord Jesus. I told him if he would bring me a red wagon for Christmas, I would give him a ride around the block in it.' Let Christ make your spirit evergreen. “What do I profit is Jesus is born in thousands of cribs all over the world during this Christmas, but is not born in my heart?” Alexander Pope (1688 - 1744) Timeline of Events in Jesus’ Infancy Beatrice H.
