Research interests: 200 – 250 words max
The current research interests of the laboratory are on two groups of insect: Acridids
(Orthoptera) and Ants (Hymenoptera).
(a) Under Orthopteroid insects, our current research target is to set up an economically
viable acridid mass rearing farm and to use the acridid biomass as mini-livestock for
food security, feed formulation and their consequences. To meet the goal several
species of acridids are under trial on reproductive biology, growth parameters, feeding
potential, tissue extracts etc. In addition, we are interested to use the yielded acridid
biomass, as animal-protein rich supplement, to fish ration and evaluate fish growth
parameters etc.
(b) The next issue that we are dealing with is to monitor the toxicological effect (from
behavior to molecules) on recurrently used pesticides to some selected notorious
Orthopteroid pests and lepidopteran caterpillar.
(c) Under the science of Myrmecology, our current research interests are on ant’s
intelligence, nest-mate recognition, chronobiology and foraging dynamics. We are
interested to interpret what dynamic interaction and recognition do occur among
nestmates and non-nestmates in ant’s sociality. The process of nestmate recognition
contributes to the survival and fitness of social insect colonies. Our concern is to detect
how social context affects the decision of colonies to perform fight and how a selforganized war between two colonies develops?
